I have just stumbled upon your fascinating site. The 2nd Battalion Essex Regt is of special interest to me as I had a great uncle who served with this unit. Service Number: 34446 Essex Regiment 2nd Bn. Died 31 October 1918 just days before the end of the war! I believe he was killed by a sniper.
My Great Grand uncle William Richard Winwright from the 2nd Essex Regiment died in April 17, 1917. Age 22. I think it was the battle of the Somme, but I’m not sure. Lest we forget the sacrifice of these young men.
Do you have any information about what battle may have took place around April 17 1917? I know that he died to machine gun and shrapnel, but there’s also a record of his place of death as the Dannes Cammiers hospital in France. Maybe he fell to his wounds there at a later date. God bless
As in maybe he was in the Somme 1916 and died in hospital months later? Not sure. Love to see your interest and telling the story of these brave souls.
Hi. Thanks for your interest in the videos. It’s difficult to tell, but he could have been injured on the Somme, and eventually died in hospital in April 1917. However, I’d suggest it would have been injuries from a more recent battle, for example the battalion took part in the Battle of Arras which started on 9 April 1917. This is covered in the most recent episode (17- An Easter Monday Outing).
