I have just stumbled upon your fascinating site. The 2nd Battalion Essex Regt is of special interest to me as I had a great uncle who served with this unit. Service Number: 34446 Essex Regiment 2nd Bn. Died 31 October 1918 just days before the end of the war! I believe he was killed by a sniper.
A complete cock up , poor buggers .
Thanks for another great video , the Human story is what makes them so interesting . Seems very unfair to die in hospital as I’m sure most men who made it there probably figured they would survive .
It’s a good point. Many did survive, one of my relatives was wounded twice, but many of the military cemeteries from the Great War mark the site of medical facilities.
Thanks for uploading this. I suppose it is safe to say my great uncle was injured in Arras in early-mid April and then died on the 17th in hospital
I agree that is the most likely. Have you tried searching websites like Ancestry for his details?
@@militaryhistorygeek2273 yeah ancestry was good, I did find some stuff like an army record which said he was in A company I think, and it also found his gravestone and location in France. I stopped paying for the membership though.
Do you have any information about what battle may have took place around April 17 1917? I know that he died to machine gun and shrapnel, but there’s also a record of his place of death as the Dannes Cammiers hospital in France. Maybe he fell to his wounds there at a later date. God bless
As in maybe he was in the Somme 1916 and died in hospital months later? Not sure. Love to see your interest and telling the story of these brave souls.
Hi. Thanks for your interest in the videos. It’s difficult to tell, but he could have been injured on the Somme, and eventually died in hospital in April 1917. However, I’d suggest it would have been injuries from a more recent battle, for example the battalion took part in the Battle of Arras which started on 9 April 1917. This is covered in the most recent episode (17- An Easter Monday Outing).
My Great Grand uncle William Richard Winwright from the 2nd Essex Regiment died in April 17, 1917. Age 22. I think it was the battle of the Somme, but I’m not sure. Lest we forget the sacrifice of these young men.
Episode 17 and 18 cover the fighting in April and May 1917.
Felixstowe is in Suffolk, no?
It is! I’m from the South of Essex- the Northern end is a mystery to me.
My great grand father Edwin Wheatley born Woodford Essex 1877 might have been in that battle,on the medal rolls list, his name and rank were corporal E.J Wheatley no35352 with the Essex second battalion,he was captured on the 28th of march 1918 at fampoux,he survived the war
Thanks for the comment, I’ll be covering that battle in quite a bit of detail in a forthcoming episode.
Thank you for these fascinating and informative videos. My great grandad George McQueen fought I believe with the 2nd Essex in WW1. He enlisted in 3rd Essex 3/3022 and then went to France and the Western Front 2nd May 1915. He survived the war but died from Lobar Pneumonia in 1921. His widow my great grandmother was refused a war pension. I am searching for more information, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for your comment, I’ll keep an eye out for that name.
Hi - just listened to this. Herbert Guiver is my 2x Great Uncle. I’ve got quite a lot of information about him. Would love to connect to discuss if you’re interested
Hi. That would be great. My email is on the main page, but is militaryhistorygeek@gmail.com
Thanks. I’ve dropped you an email
Very interesting , thank you for the effort you put into these Videos . Cheers
Glad you like them!
My Great Grandfather, 7853 Arthur Linge, was friends with Arthur Beatwell. They signed up on the same day in Southend. Both Arthurs had a brother called Ernie, both of whom were also to be subsequently killed. The incident on the 18th of November, which killed Beatwell and many others, seems to have taken place at a small moated farm just to the South of the Eastern end of the wood. It is marked 'Essex Farm' on some maps, but has nothing to do with the cemetery. As far as I can gather, A Company was returning from a stint in the trenches and was resting up at the farm when it was hit by German Artillery. I visited the spot about 8 years ago and took photos. My Great Grandfather suffered a broken leg, and wounds to the back of his head and his right arm. He died of sepsis on the 24th and is buried at Boulogne, His brother, Ernie arrived with replacements at the beginning of January, but was killed by a sniper on the 29th of the same month and buried at the Strand. Both brothers had two infant daughters under 5. Arthur and Ernie are commemorated by a road named in their honour at North Springfield, where both had lived. My uncle, Christopher Joslin, from the other side of the family, was also in the 2nd Essex, and was killed in the fighting at Tilly-sur-Seulles, ten days after D-Day. He was just 20. He is buried at Bayeux.
Thanks for sharing this information. I hope to get onto the 2nd Essex in WW2 someday! Have you seen the two battalion history’s for WW2?
@@militaryhistorygeek2273 I have, thank you, which is what prompted me to mention the WW2 connection. Keep up the good work.
I have some info but also would like to speak to you about my great grand father who was there and appeared on your video around jan 1915 regards ian
