I love how these episodes harken to a time period where the majority of society, and our media promoted, honest human-ness. The values espoused in Narnia and all the literature that lasts is at our hearts. We are all innocent, and beautiful, being just as we are. This is something I've been teaching me all my life. Just wanted to share myself here with some of my thoughts. Love to all ... long live the Aslan that is inside each of us. We are all one. :)
I had this whole set, yesterday I sold it for some dough, but rather reluctantly as it has been ages since I watched it. Today suddenly I was missing it!! So thank you Thank You HeathenMaiden for posting this!! I know the new version has more special effects and blah blah but I always favor this one!! So Thanks again!!
@HeathenMaiden It's so nice to hear people say this. I wondered if I was the only one. It's a feeling of nearly indescribable warmth, nobility and comfort that is so lost in todays world. It speaks right to the heart. Most people just make fun of it because it's not a CG Lion. And those are the kind of people that make us long for the kindness and strength aslan shows. I was dissapointed with the new Aslan, for all his realistic movements the grand warmth of heart is somehow lacking.
I find it hillarious how Father Christmas didnt mention that battles are ugly things when women fight. He sure did in the books. Times have changed.. :(
Do people not understand this was made in 1988 as a childrens mini tv series with a small budget. Its not going to have the best acting or special effects.
In my humble opinion, the new "Aslan" is like Mufasa with shiny; nothing like the Lion of Judah whom he represents. I agree BBC's Aslan is more realistic (meaning "present and alive").
I know! What a drag....T_T There's this book called "The Crafting of Narnia", it has a bunch of concept art for the 2005 and 2008 films, and it has a bunch of stuff that wasn't used in the films. Naiads, People of the Toadstools, Sprites, The White Witch as this scary Goth/Vampire Queen, and Pegasi who all resemble Fledge from The Magician's Nephew! ^^
Ha ha! Good point. I prefer her NOT using magic. You know? The most recent Witch was clearly the best... I like moments of this version and moments from the new one and would like them to get married. LOL! :-) Cheers!
i own this but on a really old video tape so all the people look like ghosts because when they walk past things you can see through them thanks for posting this version is timeless
"remember, they are tools, not toys." Are you telling me you'd send children, none of whom are over 12, out in a world where a witch and her army of ghouls and demons and evil animals like wolves are trying to kill them, without a means to protect themselves? What are beavers are going to do against a pack of evil wolves?
acctually i think barbra kellerman(?) who plays the white witch is a good actress, but i think she mostly does theaters like hamlet and stuff where that kind of acting is good....but it does not suit tv as a media as good...but still..i like her^^ the disney version is to neutral for my taste, not a villian u remember but thats just my opinion:)
"What a mercy I thought of bringing the bread knife" - you're being hunted down by bloodthirsty wolves and a murdering witch, and you stop to pack a bread knife? If it weren't for the fact that my Gramma has a Spanish accent, I would have thought this was her! lol.
Those are all wonderful episodes. Do you think (if possible) after uploading chapters five and six, maybe upload Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader? I mean if it isn't too much trouble. No need to hurry; take your time.
You can tell that 1:25 and 1:45 are either different takes or shot at different times, because the Witch's crown shifts; first the spikes frame her head, then one is in front, and I doubt that she shifted it herself while the Dwarf is trying to get the horses to move.

@tsmuff I think this version of Aslan is not as good. It lacks the majesty that any king should have. I think the Disney version is better. Although this version is aimed at a child audience, I think the Disney film gives more realism to the story and addresses issues with the appropriate seriousness. Also, do not underestimate children with a product full of overacted characters.
1- where does it say that? 2- that does NOT disprove my point. I wouldn't send a 15-year-old boy out in a world where a witch and her army of ghouls and demons and all that are trying to kill him and his 3 younger siblings, without a way to protect themselves?
@kingdomofdalriada hotness does not equal a good actor/actress... for example Orlando Bloom he may be hot but he is not a good actor... Though I do agree the witch is a decent actress, Tilda Swinton is much better.
I sort of suspect Lewis didn't have a problem with the girls fighting in the battle - I have a feeling he threw those lines in mostly to reassure his 1950s readers and their parents that he wasn't promoting anything they might disapprove of.
At first she hoped to use him as the means to get to his siblings, second he was then to be used as bait, and finally as a bargainning chip. When she did decide to kill him it was too late for not a moment later he was free.
I love this version. I really wanted to like the recent one but I found it really flat and lacking in charm, plus the CGI didn't meld well with the live film and since photo-real was what they were going for I found that distracting. Since this one was much more imaginative and fantasy like I find it much easier to suspend disbelief, and the animatronic lion still looks amazing. I guess maybe you have to be inculcated into the great British pantomime tradition to appreciate the white witch!
But that's the point. If she's only worried about a set of four, why bother killing all four? Heck, you could add a human to their party and make them worthless!
Well, if there were a set of five siblings, it'd be awful rude to have he rest say "Okay we're better than you go cry in the corner slave we're kings and queens now." So it wouldn't fit the prophecy, anyway. The prophecy spoke of FOUR children, not five and one gets left out.
Again, Santa... what is your problem?!! "No no no, Lucy, neither you or Susan should go to battle. You are women after all, and... uhm... I'm very orthodox. :D"
@similispastor yes but not any of the main characters die... unless they come back to life like aslan. Also children books usually have a happy ending.
@similispastor if Lewis had added another then he would've changed the prophesy to include that one. If they weren't supposed to succeed then the witch would've killed Edmund but think its a CHILDREN'S book...
because she wanted to use him to bring the others to her, but they didn't fall for it cause the beavers told them she was a right rotter and that confirmed what Lucy told them about what Mr Tumnus said about her. Come on man!
@Kaladelia USUALLY have a happy ending! Usually! If that little twerp Edmund died, that'd be a happy ending in my book! (Just kidding) The point is, a main character can die and still have a happy ending.
Clive Staples never specifically mentioned in the books that Aslan was a representation of Jesus. Although, anyone whose read it may easily recognize that fact out. Lewis was after all a dedicated Christian, so it's really not that surprising.
@Kaladelia First off, what does it being a childrens's book matter? People die in those all the time. Second, remember the deep symbolic and religious undertone to all of C.S. Lewis's books. If he had added another child, it would have been off balance, gender-wise.
Haha I love how Lucy is supposed to be this cute little girl... They kinda failed!!!! This kid is to east west if u know what I mean lol and she seriously needs to invet in braces rofl!

"Are you my counsellor or my slave" has to be one of the funniest lines of the whole program if not the funniest of them all!
Jean Marsh would have been a far better choice for the White Witch. She played Bavmorda in Willow. She would've been less hammy and more intimidating.
Odd that Lucy and Susan are not permitted to participate in the battle and yet nymphs are active combatants. lol
I find it hillarious how Father Christmas didnt mention that battles are ugly things when women fight. He sure did in the books. Times have changed.. :(
Thank you so much!!! You are wonderful Daughter of Eve HeathenMaiden :) I love these old computer tricks and Aslan:) Thank you so much again.
White witch: WHAT IS THAT NOISE?!
Edmund: The frist is over.
White witch: SILENCE!
Edmund: Well you did just ask a question.
She doesn’t like the answer so she shoots the messenger lol

Awesome thank you very much!!!
The witch can go from bad to okay when pretending to be "Mrs Nice", but as a villain, she's hilariously bad !
In my humble opinion, the new "Aslan" is like Mufasa with shiny; nothing like the Lion of Judah whom he represents. I agree BBC's Aslan is more realistic (meaning "present and alive").
When Edmund got out to help push the sleigh, he should have ran like hell in the opposite direction.
Remember
The Jadis still has her wand
Any attempt to escape will be silenced by her dark magic which will turn him into a statue with a pedestal

Lady Ash of Bookcatalot heck, in spiritual warfare, kids can take down demons. It's an allegory for real life
The queen looks so sad at 1:25 to 1:30, aww! I'm on her side after that moment!

Those reindeer looked bored as hell , they were like "damn is cold lets get outa here" chop chop Rudolph lmao
Look at Susan at 3:01 - she really is the mother of the group! :D
You have to remember, they do have an army of talking animals, nymphs, fauns, and centaurs at their back up. :)

Don't get me wrong about the book, 2005 series or this one. Aslan is basically Jesus. That's how C.S. Lewis put it.
@torabi3005 do did I. Got really excited when i saw them just now :D

the witch used to scare the shit out of me as a child.
Why didn't the witch, dwarf, and Edmund just ride the horses in the book instead of walking?
2:33 like your parents always say
They're draft horses. They probably aren't trained to be ridden.
Everyone is a good actor and actress how dear you Barbara is fantastic so dont judge
love the cartoon animals
@wozziesgirl you are so right.
Bongsore madam hoch and happy cristmast in the end. I thinks am very happy in home

A sleigh couldn't continue on because a snow melts. That means a spring comes up.
In short, her sleigh is a little used to her now
never thought that Father Christmas would be a damn sexist. Why women can not go and fight on the battlefield?
But that's the point. If she's only worried about a set of four, why bother killing all four? Heck, you could add a human to their party and make them worthless!

There is no phoenix in this adaptation. There's an eagle, a perlican, and a cockatrice(part rooster-part dragon).
