It’s funny how after Barbara Kellerman (the Green Lady) threatened Tom Baker (Puddleglum) in this scene, she didn’t like it when she perceived his heroically scathing attack on her world as threatening her.
The Same actress plays The Lady mostly because of budget limitations. There is some hint that she might be related to The Witch - In PC they say "a witch never really dies" and in SC they point out "they're the same breed (i.e. northern witches)" . I like to think that Lewis was not done with Narnia because he left some loose ends to be explained (like I never accepted Susan's end after all once queen of Narnia, always queen of damn NARNIA
I like to think that another reason why they used Kellerman more than once in the roles she was cast in was because they wanted to give a sense of unease, that all three evil women were in fact related somehow
Holy crap! Isn't the Lady of the Green Kirtle the same actress of the White Witch in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? AWESOME, I bloody loved her as the White Witch!
Lol when Rilian says to the Green Lady, “These my true friends have helped deliver me”. Then Jill pipes up, “We’d do it again too”. “AAH HA HA HA HA!” laughs the Green Lady.
This actress did amazing. Barbara Kellerman was so enchanting. If she told me to I would believe the world was a dream and serve her. She is so hypnotizing as the Lady of the Green Kirtle. I’m not sure I would want to escape her spell. Rather be obedient to this beautiful lady.
Then when the Green Lady tries to convince Rilian more, that there is no land named Narnia, he begins to draw his sword. It seems like he was telling her to back off. Then Puddleglum verifies that Narnia does exist.
Can I just say how incredible Prince Rillians acting is (the actor who is Prince Rillian) and the chemistry between these two. He shows just how furious he is at her barely saying a word but keeping great dignity and bravery too. This scene is just fire
Even when I was little, I remembered the snake as being very fake-looking. Now I see it was truly, hilariously awful. Disappointing, but I still really love all these BBC adaptations, and especially Barbara Kellerman.
It's a pity the end snake looks so silly after the Lady's compelling performance. They should have gone for a more humanoid serpent so Kellerman could have finished the scene more effectively.
Jakegothicsnake I did a report on J.K. Rowling and she said that she was a huge fan of the chronicles of Narnia and they were her favorite series , so I find it highly likely that the lady of green kirtle inspired her for slytherin house
There was a time when The Doctor, took the name Puddleglum, and roamed the land of narnia, to show all, his love of the sun, sky and stars, and when his work was done, he took his Tardis, and went to Aslan's country, where next, who knows.Who Nose ;)
Actually, Rilian's "Jesus Look" is a look that many men can easily pull off. To me, with the long dark hair and beard and the black outfit, he looks more like Cesare Borgia to me. But then again he also looks similar to Aragorn, Sirius Black, and Kili from The Hobbit films.
I thought her voice was perfect, with a giggly, sing-song quality. Remember, they're hearing that voice while under her spell. I really like the theatrical quality about it. It's sort of old fashion. She's too funny when playing dumb for Puddleglum: "Is there a country up there... hidden in the roof?"
A Silver Chair? A Green Witch who turns into a Serpent? Mentions of the use of "cunning"? I wonder if these aspects are what influenced J.K. Rowling in the creation of the House of Salazar Slytherin???
In the book, she threw the green dust in the fire to make the air sweet and sleepy to make it easier to cast her spell over the friends. She also had a lute, but I guess it didn't make it into the movie.
This is the deception the devil puts people under. There is no heaven no hell! Wake up people you are being deceived! There is a God. A God who loves you. Jesus died on the cross for you! Accept Him and you will always be free from this prison!
Agree. When the cult of personality we collectively give actors takes precedence over the stories they are serving ... it's almost like succumbing to the Green Lady's spell! :) Denying the original truths in the story. The books already prove that these stories resonate with audiences, because they speak of our collective internal world of love, truth, joy and honesty. Make a film from that same place, and you'll have the audience you desire to pay for it's making and then some. :)
@hermanessences This was made in the late 80's as a low budget TV Mini-Series on the BBC. So of course the Special Effects are going to look great. But The acting By Tom Baker sure makes up for it.
Abana Rena Lee yes! The release date hasn't been announced yet. The Mark Gordon Company green lighted the silver chair as a movie, he has taken Walden Media's place for the franchise. And she knocks out Puddleglum with a wicked spell, for no apparent reason. If he was supposed to stamp out the fire, then why did he put his hand in it, crying, “Aslan! Aslan!” Also in the book, Prince Rilian struggled a lot more with the serpent, as it flung its coils around him, he narrowly escaped having his sword arm pinioned to his side. Excellent swordsmanship! Puddleglum and Eustace also helped Rilian with chopping off the snake’s head, which he’d managed to catch with his free hand. Top survival instincts! Although the triumph of good over evil was great, the killing of the snake/witch was too easy.
That said it was sharper and better realised than in the book, when the Green Lady wanted to know who had destroyed the Silver Chair, that Prince Rilian didn’t actually own up, he just said there would be no more need of that chair. Of course in this adaptation we have, “Which one of you three, HAS DAAAARRRRED TO DESTROY THE SILVER CHAIR?!!” To which Rilian replies, “I did”.
