You sir...are my hero. I just started out in ARMA3 recently, and needed help tweaking my setup. I was into flying and my friends needed a skilled pilot. What they got instead was a stampeding bull in a china shop when it came to landings using my X55. I can now proudly say I can do tight landings with a good degree of accuracy where earlier it was very hit and miss :D Thank you Stay awesome
I know this vid is a couple of yrs old BUT you sure made my life flyin helis in Arma w/ the Advanced Flight Model a whole lot better. I was tryin to configure the X-55 Throttle via digital vs analog & couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the bird to level off. What I found even more controllable was programming the RTY4 knob to the collective! Now that's the money!!!!
They make such a difference in so many games. I think you'll like em. If they are adjustable, play with different settings as that can make a huge difference with different aircraft.
Thanks so much for the video. I have been trying to learn to fly the advanced model in Arma3 for a while with CH Combatstick, pro pedals and pro throttle. I never realized that too much sensitivity was what was killing me. Got to the point I was fed up and searched youtube for how to set it up. Watched your video, dropped the sensitivity on the stick and the throttle and now I'm doing good in helicopters. Now I can concentrate on learning to get even better instead of constantly fighting myself.
Outstanding video! I have the same stick and was looking for something to help me dial in my settings. Thanks for your effort, it is greatly appreciated!
Great video, helped me a TON - I'd downloaded the Helo new DLC stuff last year, and had forgotten about Arma 3 - so much great stuff, but it took me a while to set up my HOTAS (I have 5 different sets, and went with the CH for this). My settings for TrackIR got lost, I had to go into the config and manually set them back, but it's all good now. I fly R/C helicopters, I have a 500 class Align, 450 class Blades, and a dozen smaller ones. Lots of fun, so is the PC sim software for R/C, the Phoenix stuff - flying helos is a lot of fun.
+SerHaHa Super cool. I'm glad the video helped you. I don't have any experience with the R/C flight sim software, but I've seen some of the training software available and it looks fun.
I wish u could show us what controls u were presisng and also or just the camera over your hand so that we could see how u were doing the things. It would be so much more informative... Great content creator though.. finally somebody that can communicate a...
Thanks. I didn't have a web cam at the time I recorded this. I don't play Arma that much anymore and rarely have energy after long work weeks to make game videos. But I'll think about doing another video where you can see my hands and feet. That was one of the weaknesses that I did see when I was creating this video originally. Once Arma 4 comes out, I'll probably make a new one. :)
Arma 4 is already out :) is the whole large number of created stories that keep making this world alive adn fresh. Indeed when it comes out the world of gaming would have become de authorialized, participative, fully crowdsourced... we are just at the beginning of a huge era. gaming is so under evaluated... Good you have work, that is much more important. Kudos!
I'm aware this is an old video, but I hope you can still answer (Or anyone else that has flown a real heli). I am interested in knowing more about the feeling of a real cyclic. As I understand it's almost no movement is needed to get movement, but how is the feel of centering the stick on a real heli? Was it very clear where the zero was? Or did you have to get the feel for it? I guess a real heli would use the forces of the blades to "center" the stick more than a sim would, but my main struggle with the controllers I have used is to keep it centered and do small adjustments from there.
Sorry for the late reply. I just saw this comment. I took a helicopter training class once, and what I can say is the cyclic was very much tied into the controls of the rotor. What I mean is, I didn't really remember feeling any sort of center, at least not in the way you feel it on a joystick. I suppose if I let go of the stick, it would mostly stay where it was unless it moved due to aerodynamic forces. The helicopter that I was learning on was definitely not fly-by-wire. So in a helicopter that is fly-by-wire, the feeling might be closer to using a high end consumer joystick. But in the helo I was flying, I worked hard to keep the aircraft doing what I wanted and never worried about keeping the joystick centered. In other words, I worked constantly to control the attitude of the aircraft vs. working off of a center position of the joystick. If I needed to be mostly left stick to keep the thing where I wanted, then that's what I did. Of course, I'm Arma, the trim feature is questionable. So I have auto trim turned on. My advice if you are having problems with that hand eye coordination, is to change the sensitivity of the joystick. If it's too sensitive or not sensitive enough then you'll always be fighting it. So always tweak those values, even after a while, and make the helicopter Sim work for you. It will be more fun and you'll be more likely to keep playing.
Hey Feint, first off I like to thank you for your clarity of explaining how to setup the Thrustmaster Warthog to Arma 3...your video helped me in many many ways to understand how to setup my gaming profile..which I have done now..all that is needed is to do some tweaking out..but Joystick and Throttle work fine..with a little fine tuning still to be done..THANK YOU VERY MUCH now I can enjoy ARMA 3 in its full Realm...
Thanks. I actually make videos for a living, so I'm used to spending a long time looking for music for video projects. I think most people don't have the time or energy to get something free that works. Most music is bad for videos.
Not really. Occasionally I start it up to work on a project but I don't really play it anymore. I like the Ghost Recon games better even though the micro transactions really bother me.
Great videos. I to now have the X52 pro set up as well as Trackir and pro pedal. It there a possibility that you have a printable config of your set up that you can share with someone trying to learn. Printable so I can go more step by step and get mine set up. One thing I did was also got a set of the controller mount plans from Rodger Dodger and built it. I like it so far just need to know more about how to set up my joy sticks. I do realize there will be some things that work for you that I wont use etc. but if possible your set up would give me a really great place to start.
Since I posted this video, I am now using the Warthog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind pedals. So my controls will not work for your setup unfortunately. But when I was using the X52 Pro, I did set the toggles on the base of the joystick to things like Flaps up/down, Gear up/down and I can't remember the third. On the Throttle, the big E button was my eject button. The button just below that toward me was my minimap button (GPS). Since the hats aren't used for view, I'd set those to the various target buttons (next target, next empty target, etc). Honestly, it's probably better to try and implement keyboard commands for the different aircraft and helicopter controls. Then program those into the HOTAS via the software, and use the three point toggle to switch between sets of commands. It takes a lot longer to program it all that way, but its better than what I was doing at the time. If you search online for an Arma 3 setup for the X52 pro, you can find one.
Hey Feint, nice tutorial..was wondering if you could do the same for the Arma 3 Jets how to setup the rockets and bombs..I've tried and just can't get it too work right..I have the Thrustmaster Warthog combination...many many thanks..great video..
Sir, Amazing video. One question, which you may have answered and I am too thick headed to see it, is there any way to get rid of the "dead" half of the +/- in the collective? I once had them set that way however a reset erased that... Im sorry if I missed it and this is a repeat question
so got a question to anyone or the creator if you still monitor the channel. So when I put my Trim to Disabled (no assist) I just spin to the right, like im going hard on my foot-pedal, do you possibly know a fix for this? I have tried alot and researched it up and just cant find an answer. Its fine if I have Trim assist on. Thanks to anyone that can help me out. Arma3 cant possibly expect you to fly whilst holding the foot pedal the entire time ( as that seems to counter it slightly, but as soon as you lift up the foot pedal thats is countering the rotation it just starts rotating again). Hope this made since. also what do the settings in the menu where you turn your engine on that states Set Trim Manual, and Release Trim, what exactly does that do? Thanks. for the assist.
So basically, Arma is modeling what really happens in a helicopter in real life. When you take off, you have to push the rudder pedal to counter the torque steer that happens normally when you add torque to the main rotor. The anti-torque rotor helps to counteract that torque, but you have to push the rudder input so that it knows how much anti-torque you want. This is how it works in real life and you constantly have to manage these inputs. Don't expect a helicopter to ever travel in a straight line. It's not like an airplane. You will always be turned slightly to the side. I usually fly with trim assist turned on all the time in Arma because it's just not that much fun to fly without it. But if you want a real challenge, you can turn it off. You will need to set up a button on your flight stick that allows you to set the trim, otherwise your legs will get cramped after a while if you are using rudder pedals, which I recommend when using this mode. I recommend using one of the hat switches as they are easy to get to. The way the trim works is that you take off, push the rudder pedal to counteract the torque, and then press the trim set button. Then you can relax your rudder leg and return it to center. Then as you fly around and change torque inputs, you will need to eventually move the rudder pedal around more to make sure that the aircraft is flying straight and level. Once you have the aircraft moving in the way that you want, in the orientation that you want, press the trim set input button again and that will set the new trim. Keep in mind that the trim set button sets the trim both for the cyclic and the rudder pedals. Playing in this mode is definitely a challenge. And it can be rewarding to master that challenge. after flying for a while in this mode, it seems pretty natural. And it will be easier to transition to other flight simulators. And going back to automatic trim feels weird and arcade after that. But if you are just flying around for fun and don't want to have to worry about trim, I would recommend turning it off. Also, while you are still learning how to use the trim, I would turn off wind effects until you grasp the concept. Then, once you have figure things out, you can turn the wind back on and give yourself a more realistic challenge.
@@Feintgames Thanks for the expedient reply. hm. So I have flown going back to the days of FSX, and I have never experienced something like this in any helo I have flown in a simulator with realistic settings. So I was using a controller/ kb&m /and currently messing with a ol Logitc Extreme 3d pro I had tucked away in the closet. So LIFT OFF off ..the moment I mean the second I have skids up it automatically starts rotating right. It never rotates LEFT, even after I have manually given it pedal to straiten it out, as soon as I start easing up on the pedal it just starts rotating/pedal right again. I will admit I am a noob to Arma3, however, it cant be as complicated as Flight Sim X or is it? So as you stated counter pedal, but I find it strange that I cant get it to come out of that right rotation no matter if I am lifting off manually or coming out of a hover from lift-off. Anyways I just do not get it, and really all I want it for is to be able to circle a target form the air (nose down) and I find on other games like BF4 it is near impossible to do this maneuver with any kind of Trim assist on. I do fly with Weather, and Stress disabled atm as I am really really perplexed by this. It has been a number of years since I have been on PC and flown, but I do not remember it being this difficult (almost like the pedal is somewhat stuck (I mean out of 20-30 adjustments and re-starting it always seems to rotate to the right, NEVER auto to the left. Does not react this way if I have assist on or in a hover. Do you still get on Arma3 to fly? I am 1/2 tempted to make a video and post it up, so ppl can see and comment on it. ha. Thanks again for the reply. Subbed, plan on checkin your content out lil later, this is just so frustrating as I fell like mb I have something binding/conflicting in my setup. idk, shite, lol
Feint are you planning on doing anymore around flying etc using the advanced flight model as things have changed alot from the standard flight model used in arma 3?
Cool.. I may get the warthog set later but for now I think its better I get use to what I have before spending a lot more. I can prob stop your great video, make note then play some stop and make notes.. Thanks for the feed back and again your tutorial videos are really a great help. I am still having a problem getting my trackir, pedals and X52pro to show up when I go into control setup.. I will eventually get it figured out. probably just something I am not doing right.. I think I may need to turn things on, restart return things on etc. to get them to show up right... Again thanks for the great videos and I did subscribe to your site I did make the Rodger Dodger helo control set up etc. and modified it so I can leave the regular x52 throttle on it just for helos and will use the pro for planes. I also got a FFB2 for the helos so Hopefully it will be more usable for me that way.
Glad you like the videos. Thanks for the kind words. I'll have to look for the Roger Dodger thing as I've not heard of that. If your input devices aren't showing up in Arma 3, but they are showing up correctly in Windows, when you go into your Controls in Arma 3, click on "Controllers" and then click the "Refresh" button. Once in a while, TrackIR will not be recognized, but if I hit that refresh button, suddenly everything is there and not ghosted out. Sometimes Arma just needs a kick in the pants.
Its a controller holder made of PVC which you can connect your stick and throttle to in different ways which can also have your pedals connected to it. Basically you pull your chair up to it, strap it to your chair so you can use pedals without pushing them away, your throttle can be mounted on the left side and your stick in the middle. I have a extra controller on mine as I set it up so I can use it as a collector for helos and have my stick in the center between my knees and can also have my regular x52pro mounted if I want to switch to fixed wing.. Just makes it easier and faster to changes things and I dont have to keep moving the throttle for different things. I also went ahead and get the FFB2 as you were saying in your video how much better it id for Helos.. www.rogerdodger.net/diyflightsims/ I bought the Helo plan from him then modified it so it is also the fixed wing stand. Took me alone and taking my time a afternoon to cut the pieces and assemble it. Just have a couple things to remember and measure as his measurements my not exactly fit your chair, thats width and height that you want or need it.
Very cool. Did I recommend the ffb2? I used to use it many years ago and liked it as an inexpensive and reliable joystick. BTW, I recently got new lockable casters for my office chair. They work really well, but the locks are on a hair trigger and it's easy to pop them into locking position accidentally and then get locked in place. Haha. I wish there was a way of locking them in place all at once. I could probably rig up some kind of DIY switch to lock them all at once, but you know...no time.
If you have a lot of mods, especially mods that change the menu structure, that might be the problem. I've never heard of the menu not rendering properly. Must be a mod causing it.
ever since ive had arma last year when im in the sensitivity scree it doesnt show which axis is what, shows a few bars and they just flash if i move any axis and i cant adjust them
i have the same pedals but when i bind the pedals my heli just spins around and i have to push the pedal slightly to correct it. I went into the controls axis to see if it is off centre but everything seems ok
That sounds like normal helicopter flying. You have to apply left pedal to counteract the torque from increasing the cyclic. You can double check if there's a problem by looking at an airplane and seeing if the rudder is visually off to one side. If that's the case, try recalibrating the pedals.
Hi Feint thanks for sharing such great information and doing this demo tutorial, I use Thrustmaster Hotas warthog and Saitek combat pedal and wanted to know if you have to tweak anything in Windows 7, 8, 10 etc joystick configuration regards deadzones and sensitivity first before using this software or everything is handled within the software.Would you mind shed a bit of light on how you would config Windows,Ctrl panel, Device & prntrs game controller's? thanks in advance ...
Hi and thanks for your comments. I just started using the thrustmaster warthog hotas myself, and I honestly do everything through the thrustmaster software. I haven't had to tweak anything or do anything special in Windows.
+Feint Thanks for the response I really appreciate if at any point you happen to do or have a tutorial on Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog please keep me posted cheers.
+feint great video! I am a little new to ARMA3 - how would I get a heli training/flying around scenario like the one you're showing here set up? any helpful links?
+flinz Hmm, in the Steam Workshop, there are quite a few single player (SP) missions available for you to do either combat sorties or less difficult transport/rescue sorties. I would recommend "Pilot MH-6M Littlebird On Missions" by RobJ. They get pretty repetitive as the missions are random and sometimes repeat one right after the other. But they are good practice. This mission requires the MELB, which is available on armaholic. However, for learning, not practice, I would seek out "Dslyecxi's MH-6 Practice Scenario" for Arma 2.. It's Arma2 only, but if you're willing to reinstall Arma 2, if you own it, it's definitely worthwhile. There are lots of moves in there that have taught me a lot and it's in-game, not a video, so it's a good way to learn through doing. Fair warning, it's not easy. And Dslyecxi uses a keyboard and mouse, so some of the throttle moves he does simply aren't possible when using a throttle because of the way Arma handles keyboard inputs vs. axis inputs. But it's still very worth a download and a look. I don't think you can adapt the mission to Arma 3. Maybe you could, but you'd have to rewrite it by hand and use All-in-Arma to get the map from Arma 2 into Arma 3. You'd have to rewrite the classnames for the helicopter and pilot that are in the mission. Replace them with Arma 3 variants. Not sure what else you'd have to replace but the game would tell you what "Addons" were missing once you tried to load it up. Might be worth a try, but there's a possibility that the mission wouldn't work at all in Arma 3.
Forgot to mention that in the video. I have my sensitivity set to about 10-20% and no deadzone. But really I am still tweaking it. I was using RJJ's Agile Helicopters mod and that effects rudder sensitivity.
Sorry to bother, if I understand this correctly, if I am not using the advanced flight model in an helicopter I should map my x52 hotas throttle both in the analog increase fields with the negative first and the positive second, that will give me 100% range on the throttle? I been having trouble with this. Any help would be really appreciated
Hi Dan, it's been a while since I played Arma so they might have changed this. If it's not working for you, try setting it up the more logical way, assigning each axis + and - to each analog direction and see if that fixes it.
@@Feintgames hey man thanks for taking the time to reply, I have tried it in normal mode, it doesn't appear to work, I suspect the all thing works differently as I can hear the Heli change noise when I move it but the power curve is different, don't get any lift until 50%, when in advanced mode I get lift at around 30. Anyway, thanks for the reply
It's all personal preference, and I change my settings from time to time, but I ended up taking screenshots of my settings as they relate to the Saitek. Check out my facebook page for the photos. facebook.com/feintgames
Feint - I don't have the foot pedals, do you have a suggestion for another option that works? I am having the toughest time getting rotation and smooth turns.
+James Pearson The HOTASs that I've tried that have twist stick rudder controls are so so. It's difficult to be smooth on those when also tipping the stick in a direction, or more accurately, it's effective on some moves, but not others. That's why I finally opted for rudder pedals. They are also good for using them as alternatives for lean in Arma 3. I use the toe brakes on my pedals for leaning and it's so much better than using keystrokes. It also frees up some very important keystroke real estate for other controls. I don't know what hardware you're running, but if you've already tried the tips in this video and still can't get the rudder reacting the way you want, and you don't think you'll get used to it, think seriously about what your gaming budget is and see if you can opt for another peripheral.
Hope you still follo wthis. Its now 2022 and for the last couple months I have not been able to get Arma to recognise my X 52 Pro nor my X56 Rhino. Maybe you can check to see what theproblem may be and post a video on how to solve it. I have been unavailabe to play Arma for a while due to other requirements and trying to get back into it. I was thinking of getting new updates etc, BUT IF I cannot get my Joystick to work again will probabbly pass. I still have my X 52 and it works great in other games as well as my X 56 Rhino and have no problems with it working in MSFS 2020 or DCS. Seems like ARMA is the only place it is not recognised or where it does not work. Hopefully you still watch this OLD VIDEO and can make a new updated one for us.
Whenever I try to change the settings (cyclic movement) It doesn't show my joystick on the right side, Nor does it do anything when I move the joystick in a direction, Im not sure what the problem is, Im completely new to being a joystick owner and Im not even sure I have one compatible with arma, Mine is a GTX Trust 555
Hey Feint, great video, How did you film yourself flying from a fixed point on the ground? is that a mod, a script or you just had a buddy recording that POV? Cheers
+Honey Badger Sorry for the slow reply. I didn't get an alert that this message was posted. Slim pickings in the joystick arena. The X52 Pro old ones before MatCatz took over were pretty good but still had their problems. The MadCatz versions I've heard a lot of bad things about, though the software is much improved over the original weird and buggy Saitek software. I wouldn't buy any of these joysticks used honestly unless you could try them out in person and/or knew the seller. My old X52Pro has been working OK so I've not been looking at joysticks for a while. But I can tell you my general impressions about some other companies: In my experience, products from Razer are very cool looking but they never live up to their price. Again, this is in my experience. I have several high end products from them and I don't like any of them. Microsoft joysticks that I had when I was much younger seemed bulletproof just like their mice. Simple, not flashy, but they work and work well. Logitech products that I've owned have been pretty great. I would look hard at a Logitech joystick if I was in the market for one. Other than that, look at what other gamers are using and see what they think of their products. A lot of these devices are a pretty personal choice. Like the Thrustmaster Warthog might seem like the best on the market because of the price, but it's a licensed product which means there's a price hike just for the USAF logo being used. Also, I've heard mixed reviews for that product and at that price point, it better be perfect for me to buy it. Other people though would buy it just to have it and they don't care as much about the price. So again, very personal decisions.
I've assigned a couple pedals to my rudder axis but it was super slow compared to pressing a button, just bought a new joystick and it turns left and right for the rudder but its the same, super slow, and adjusting the sensitivity doesn't change much, any ideas?
+Chris Bennett The button press will go from 0 to 100% instantly. The pedals will be much more subtle and controllable. You can raise the sensitivity of the pedals in your pedal software and in the game as demonstrated in the video. Either way, it's hard to expect the same level speed of pedals compared to a button press unless you're willing to slam the pedals in one direction or another. I've gotten my pedals to be pretty responsive. Anything you do will require some personal adjustment time. I'm also using a mod with the Littlebirds which increases the strength of the antitorque rotor.
great video! I have a problem, maybe you know how to solve it, I have an old aviation saitek and in the weapon the thorttle shaft starts to be effective at 50% of its movement. in the configuration of the game when I move the axis shows me that it goes from -100 to 100, then the collective really starts to move from 0 to 100 using half the axis travel ...
Need more info. It could be a million things. Make sure to download and install the drivers and reboot. Also, make sure the joystick is plugged in to a power outlet. Also, plug in the joystick directly to the back of the computer, not the front and not to a USB hub. If it's showing up in Windows, you're most of the way there. If it shows up in Windows, but not Arma, go into Arma, Settings > Controls and click on the Controllers tab. If the joystick is visible but ghosted out, click refresh.
Hello, man can you explain or show how to set up sensitivity of twist rotation, with my X52 pro i cant change it in mad catz profiler ...., in game when i put it on 0 my twist rotation is still to sensitive ....., i have no rudder pedals i use twist on stick
+Kamil M Make sure you are editing the correct axis. The axis will light up when you move it. Also, make sure your joystick isn't malfunctioning. With zero sensitivity, you should be able to get that rotation to go very slowly on the twist. If not, there might be something wrong with your hardware.
Picked up a MadCatz F.L.Y.5 and i have no idea how to set it up for arma... or any other game, on arma it shows a list of available keybindings, but for my stick nothing is showing up. The light on the stick is on and i assume its working. do i need a driver or something.
I suggest you check their forums for similar complaints. Usually if nothing is showing up, you should delete previous joystick drivers and install the drivers that came with the stick in the package. Or, download the latest drivers from their site. The light can indicate that the stick has power. But you'll want to look in the Devices and Printers section of Windows to see if there are any problems. Try rebooting too as sometimes Windows appears to install something, but doesn't make the change until you reboot.
that is going to break in a few days... U might want to modify it a little bit as the wires inside get caught on the inside of the case. I had to end up cutting a whole in the bottom of mine and elevating it after I soldered all of the wires back together.
Hey Feint, just picked up the X56 hotas and arma can't tell the difference between the collective and the cyclic. I'm a little overwhelmed and any help would be appreciated. Thanks
+Todd Woolley Basically operating a helicopter is like balancing on a beach ball. The Cyclic (joystick) is you leaning in a direction on that beach ball. The Collective (throttle) will raise and lower the beach ball. But everything has to be in balance. So if you tip the Cyclic forward, you will fall forward but you will land on your nose. So you have to raise the Collective so that you move up. Combining the two will allow you to fly forward and level without falling. Both inputs will always be effecting the other. Once you get the hang of it, it's very rewarding. It's also a lot of fun to get right.
HI MATE iv got a problem my joystick only goes to half thrust and same with the x and y i can pull back and it seems to no pull back all the way and push forward and for left and right can you help me i know a lot of ppl with the same problem
+Feint I have the same issue as him and this is not the problem, as well as this the controller shows the input as 100% in the sensitivity menu yet only travels the cyclic halfway. The mouse has double the travel distance.
+Bigbigcheese +peter a'beckett Are you guys using HOTAS joystick and throttle or are you using game controllers like an xbox controller? If it's a console controller, then I experienced the same problem and couldn't fix it. For HOTAS, see below. First, try creating a new profile in Arma and setting up the joystick. If this fixes your problem, then the problem might be with your profile, not with Windows or your joystick. If this doesn't work, go to the next paragraph. To fix your profile, you can either start over with a fresh profile, or try to fix your existing one. First make sure you're doing the right thing. If you're using the Advanced Flight Model, then you should be mapping your throttle to the analog inputs for cyclic. If you're not using the Advanced Flight Model, then you can use either, depending on your HOTAS. I'm sure you both already tried this, but go into Windows and make sure the joystick and throttle can be moved through the full range of travel and that Windows sees a 100% movement in Windows when you move the input all the way. After that, make sure you have the proper drivers and the proper software installed for your joystick/throttle. For Saitek's HOTASs that means not just the driver but the Mad Cats Profile Editor as well. Once the profile editor is downloaded, make sure it's running. You can set up a custom profile for Arma 3 at this time or just skip it and go into Arma 3. Now, go into Windows Devices and Printers, find your HOTAS, right click on it, go to Game Controller Settings. You should be able to calibrate your HOTAS here. Follow the instructions and see if that helps. Also, look at the deadzones and make sure there are no deadzones that are limiting your travel. If none of that works, see if you can plug a different joystick in and see if that fixes your problem. If it does, then the problem might be with your joystick.
Creating a new profile worked... But I cannot see why, and I liked my original profile anyway. There is nothing different in relation to joysticks and control methods in the configs...
+Bigbigcheese That's good news. That's easier to fix than a broken joystick. Try resetting the control input to default, save and exit, restart the game, then change it to what you want. Sometimes the game just needs to rewrite the file.
My joystick's sensitivity is unusable low on the x axis. Everything else works fine but I can barely strafe. I can't seem to fix this in the game settings and the driver is showing full range input on all axis. Any ideas/tips?
Assuming the joystick works correctly in other games, look at the sensitivity of the x-axis in the settings. I believe you can set them independently when you click on "controllers". When on that screen, when you move the joystick, the axis should light up in the settings menu letting you know which one to adjust. Also, make sure that you've assigned the X axis correctly to the correct input in the game and that it's not duplicated up with other inputs (which other people have had trouble with). Sorry, I know these are obvious suggestions, but maybe they will help.
I think they are meant to be reflective of the response vs input. Or input vs response. So if the curve is concave (curved inward to the right), then if you put in a lot of input, you'll just get a little response from the aircraft. If the curve is a straight line, then the response is 1:1, in other words, if you move the joystick a certain amount, the aircraft will react to that input normally. If the curve is convex (curved outward to the left), then a little bit of input will result in the aircraft moving a lot. Basically, it's a complicated way of mapping "more sensitive, normal, less sensitive".
Alright, eventually figured it out myself after playing around with it a bit. they're just response (of the aircraft) over distance that the joysticks traveled in any axis yeah? like low sensitivity means you get more response from the vehicle in the last few degrees of movement in the joystick than the first few degrees.
Something like that. They are a bit misleading. I would just ignore those pictograms and stick with the idea that the sliders change the sensitivity. I am not sure it's changing the sensitivity curve honestly, just the overall sensitivity. But I could be wrong.
Go into settings and I think it's under Advanced Flight Model. There's an option to turn it on and off. It's not a mod. But to see it, you have to enable AFM.
I think by default it's holding down Alt or double clicking Alt, and then looking around with your mouse. But if you don't want to do that, you can always assign the head movements to hat switches on your joystick.
Is there any way to use my mouse like a joystick? I mean, the default control is mouse aim, not mouse joystick as you don't control the control surfaces of the aircraft n stuff, but "tell the aircraft which way to look". Having a virtual joystick could be a game changer to me, I'd undoubtedly fly with it like a pro as I have that in all flight simulators because I lack a physical joystick/controller. Default control is just... pure pain. I can somehow land with WASD n that crap mouseaim, but strafing runs are a no go, I either crash every single goddamn time, or miss my targets completely :(
No there isn't. I would recommend getting a stick. It's more immersive, you can program the buttons on it to do things you'd otherwise have to use the scroll menu for, and they are fun. You can get a stick for like $30USD. And I'm sure if you use craigslist, you could probably find something used that's very good nearly for free.
@@Feintgames Well yep... Stick it is. That means I gotta wait to get that money... Used to have one long before, but it's broken. Well, until then I better get used to crashing alot XD
Hello Feint, i have a problem with my Saitek X52 Pro and i hope you can help me. Arma didnt react when i press a button on the stick and so i cant set my controls. For example, if go to Cyclic forward and press the Joystick forward nothing happens. And this is with every button except the throttle. I hope you can help me. And sorry for my bad english but i still learning it :) Greetings from Germany
greetings from America! It sounds like there's a problem with the interconnect cable between the throttle and the joystick. when pushing the joystick forward try rattling the cable around and see if arma recognizes the input. if it does, then you might just need a new cable. I had to replace mine.
+Feint Ok thank`s for the fast answer. There is something wrong with the cabel or the joystick because the throttle work`s without any problems. I will follow your advice and try it. Could you say me which type of cabel it is if i have to buy it in a market. Ps. You have a new subscriber form germany ;)
+Nick Thanks for the subscription! I had a hard time finding an "official" cable from Saitek, so I just bought a standards PS2 to PS2 cable. This will work, but it's 6 feet long which would be a pain. I'm sure you can find something shorter: www.amazon.com/Monoprice-6-Feet-MDIN-6-Cable-100092/dp/B001TKQOTG Any PS2 keyboard extension cable should work as long as it's male to male.
+Feint Hello Feint thanks for the answer again but i found my problem with my stick. I looked to both ends of the cable and looked for the little pins. One pin was bent and i bent him back. Now the joystick works fine without any problems but thank you for your answers! Greetings Nick
hey buddy, in the past 1-2 months ago i could fly a heli in arma 3 with my mouse, now if i use my mouse it only free looks. i even disabled vehicle freelook, still the same... u got any solutions ?
There is an option somewhere in 'game settings' saying something like 'vehicle look'... Change that and it should fix your problem. Sorry I couldn't be more specific, I'm not on the game at the moment.
+jackdavidharris That's not enough information to make any kind of educated guess. Not knowing much about your situation, I'd suggest that you make sure your joysticks are properly powered, make sure the drivers are up to date, the usual. Also, try disconnecting other peripherals that might be interfering with your joysticks. Finally, I'd contact the joystick manufacturer and see if there's something wrong with your hardware.
Just one thing about the collective: Please for the love of humanity - invert it! Pull the throttle back/towards you --> collective raise, as in the real thing. It's not a throttle, it's a collective. In a helicopter the throttle is only used for starting the engines which is then controlled by the governor.
Yes, this is a detail that I am well aware of. In real helicopters, for anyone who doesn't know, the throttle is a separate twist input on the cyclic, similar to a motorcycle throttle. Before flight, you have to rotate this to "Flight", i.e. 100%. Once you land, if you want to save fuel, you can rotate the throttle back down to "Idle" which will be enough to keep the blades spinning, but won't be enough to get off the ground. Daniel, in the past, I've played with my HOTAS throttle input inverted as you suggested. It's OK. The problem is that the "throttle" input on my HOTAS is "forward-back" on my desk, not "up-down" as it is in a helicopter. And since I play a lot of flight sims with planes where forward it increased thrust and back is decreased thrust, going back and forth between planes and helicopters was a bit of a transition for me every time. I tried it for a few weeks, but ultimately chose to switch back to forward being up collective and back being down collective.
That's not a dumb question. So if you're flying an airplane, sometimes you have to pull back on the stick constantly to keep it straight and level. Or sometimes you have to push forward on the stick or give it a little left stick to keep it level. Well, there are these things called Trim Wheels in the cockpit that operate little tabs on the plane which help direct the plane in one direction or another. Then, once you set them, you can let go of the controls and the plane will fly straight without any input from you. That's called, "trimming out the aircraft". Interestingly, autopilots typically move the aircraft by manipulating the trim. In helicopters, you also have to set the trim over and over depending on what you are trying to do and how you are trying to fly. Otherwise, you might end up with your left leg pressed in for hours or your hand pressed into your left inside thigh. So if you can set the trim to auto, then you don't have to worry about that as much. Real helicopters like the H145 have autopilot systems that set the trim automatically while allowing you to still fly the aircraft. It makes the helicopter much easier to fly because it uses a computer to help figure out what you're trying to do. It's like stability control for your car.
+Riley Hembree Make sure you unbind any keyboard keys in in raise and lower collective (not the analog one), then delete the analog raise and lower bindings and rebind it moving your throttle the appropriate way for raise and lower binds. You should now have full movement.
I believe when you apply a scheme, it automatically maps controls to the different buttons on your joystick. So if you have a Saitek X52 Pro, it will map flaps to one of the buttons on your joystick. Gear up and down will be mapped to two buttons on your joystick. Eject will be mapped to a button on your throttle. Etc.
Very nice. Kewl, with your video and knowledge i could easily calibrate, set and configurate even my Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS with the Simpeds F16/c Rudders. Now Heloflying is much more easier, especially the Helicopter Time Trials! xD Could you please also make an video to setup the TrackIR 5 correctly to work with the Arma 3 (without HRP), and the Helicopter Time Trials TT06-TT10? Because we cant use your fantastic Head Range Plus for that. All mods are disabled, or you dont come on the leaderboard... And it´s kinda hard for me to adjust it for the Arma 3 Helo´s. Many thanks in advance. Keep on! Cheers Ironblader (germany) p.s. I also own an R/C Helicoper with an 2-stroke engine, The Kalt GS Baron. An old model, but it still flies ;-)
Actually, I think it was probably the mic on my Razer headset. But I wouldn't recommend any Razer products. I've had bad luck with three of their things (headset and two mice)
I love Arma, but why the fuck doesn't BI provide sensible default settings for people that want to fly their planes / choppers with a joystick / HOTAS setup?? The way it is now, you have to set up every single conrol action yourself. Arghh ...
+antred11 I tend to agree especially since a lot of people are advanced gamers with better setups. But I figure BI is trying to appeal to general gamers too (where the money is) and so they are trying to offer a general purpose setup for people just use kb and mouse or a controller or maybe a simple joystick. The advanced gamers like us are good at seeking out the information they need to perfect their setups.
If you're using the advanced flight model, I believe you have to set up one of the keys to start the helicopter in the controls. You might also be able to start it in the quick menu using your mouse wheel
Flying a helicopter is like balancing on a ball. If you start to lean forward by pushing the cyclic forward, you will eventually crash into the ground just as you would fall off the front of the ball. So to prevent that, you increase the collective which I guess is kind of like making the ball bigger. It's a balance you have to perform because eventually you'll go faster and faster. And then to slow down, you should pull back on the cyclic. But if you're going really fast you will shoot up into the air. So you have to pull back on the cyclic while decreasing the collective at the same time. That way you slow down without increasing altitude.
Now that I have you, can I please "bombard" lol you with a few questions. I'm new to ARMA but not flight simulation and notice in the A-10 the throttle "thrust" seems to be on full or off even though I've mapped it properly "analogue"and played around with the sensitivity It doesn't seem to make little if any difference? Second question, is there a way in singleplayer to just get in all the different helicopters and just fly around. I've already completed the one showcase mission but can't seem to figure out how to navigate through the interface to just fly around a bit in all the flyers? I have all the DLC's Third question, is there a way to move the cockpit heads up display in the A-10 close enough so you can actually read the hud without having to use the zoom toggle option over and over. I'm just using a hat switch maybe the IR5 is the answer for that one? I am actually a pilot and have been flying for years and to find this gem is a real treat, wish i'd looked into it sooner. Thanks for your time and effort on the tutorial. :)
D goof Whoo, a lot of questions. Throttle mapping for Planes should be Thrust (Analog) set to throttle forward on your HOTAS. I have Brake (Analog) set to both my left and right pedal toe brakes, but you can set the brakes to something else. This will brake your wheels when on the ground and deploy your air brakes when in the air or going above a certain speed on the ground. To use all of the aircraft in SP, open the editor, choose a map, place a pilot unit, then place and Empty aircraft. I usually place the unit and aircraft at the main airport on Altis, but you can start anywhere where there's enough room to take off. The FOV default setting is a bit too wide angle for me and the hud is very small. So I almost always change the FOV (field of view) by mapping the Zoom (Continuous) to one of my rotary dials on my throttle on my X-52 Pro. I used to set it to the slider on the throttle, but it broke. Anyway, sometimes the FOV or zoom level doesn't "take" when I start a new mission, so I just slightly move the rotary dial and the zoom level pops into the correct position. This way, I can be slightly zoomed in no matter what vehicle I am in or if I am on the ground. Seems to work great and I just set it and forget it most of the time. This helps with seeing the HUD but usually the HUD is still too far away. So I've set one of my other buttons to Zoom + and nothing set to Zoom - and when I release the button the view returns to my default zoom level set by my rotary dial.
Thanks a million for all the information. i managed to grind through most of the interface now and figured out a lot more but these tips are invaluable to me. thanks again :)
I'll be sure to make more videos where I accidentally mispronounce a word so that you have another opportunity to be an asshole. I think we'll all really look forward to more of that.
You sir...are my hero. I just started out in ARMA3 recently, and needed help tweaking my setup.
I was into flying and my friends needed a skilled pilot. What they got instead was a stampeding bull in a china shop when it came to landings using my X55.
I can now proudly say I can do tight landings with a good degree of accuracy where earlier it was very hit and miss :D
Thank you
Stay awesome
+PocketzDK Haha, I know the feeling. I'm glad that this video helped you. That's why I make these things and it's great to get that feedback.
Dude I needed this video so bad... thank you lol. Was about to return my X52 if I didn’t figure this out
I'm glad it helped!
the collective parts where life savers i had all but given up on using the throttle and had been using the keyboard!
Thanks dude, your analog and digital collective part really helped me out.
I'm glad it was useful. I wish BI would make setting up a HOTAS easier.
Great video, I just picked up rudder pedals to go with my x52 after watching your video.
They make such a difference in so many games. I think you'll like em. If they are adjustable, play with different settings as that can make a huge difference with different aircraft.
Best arma 3 joystick tut for helis i have watched on yt..and i have watched a lot.
Very useful, thanks , sir!
Thanks for the kind words. Glad it was helpful. Happy New Year.
That's awesome. Glad this video helped you. :)
WOW!!! Thank you a lot. more than three year later.
Ha ha, wish I was making money off this video. People are still using it.
@@Feintgames Yes. We are. :)
I wish u could show us what controls u were presisng

Kudos!
You are my Hero! Thank you!!!
No problem. Happy to help
Thanks for the vid, everything is covered I learnt a lot!
That's great! Glad it helped.
Great video -- thanks for posting this! I'm still testing the waters with a Logitech 3D Pro but many of these tips are applicable.
Glad it was helpful! :)
Excellent video, I love the info. I've been having issues with my collective on my old non pro x52 so hopefully this will help
That's a great video, thanks for sharing! Subscribed!
Very cool. Thanks!
I didn't know sensitivity can change so much!
Thanks!
You're welcome. Glad I could help!
Great informative video, thanks for sharing!..
Your videos are extremely helpful!
Thanks. I'm glad you found them helpful.
love the very soft QUIET soundtrack in the back, many ppl go way too loud
Thanks. I actually make videos for a living, so I'm used to spending a long time looking for music for video projects. I think most people don't have the time or energy to get something free that works. Most music is bad for videos.
Thanks for the fantastic video!
You're welcome. Glad it helped
Found it VERY useful! Thank you SO MUCH!
Do you still play Arma 3? DayZ Stand-alone has helis now.
Are you talking about a dead zone in the middle of the collective?
so got a question to anyone or the creator if you still monitor the channel.
Subbed, plan on checkin your content out lil later, this is just so frustrating as I fell like mb I have something binding/conflicting in my setup. idk, shite, lol
very usefull , still on 2020 bro, thnks!
No problem. Glad it's still useful
Feint are you planning on doing anymore around flying etc using the advanced flight model as things have changed alot from the standard flight model used in arma 3?
Maybe. I haven't developed my skills exactly to where I'd like them to be yet. But once I do, I think I'll make an instructional video.
Again thanks for the great videos and I did subscribe to your site
I did make the Rodger Dodger helo control set up etc. and modified it so I can leave the regular x52 throttle on it just for helos and will use the pro for planes.
I also went ahead and get the FFB2 as you were saying in your video how much better it id for Helos..
www.rogerdodger.net/diyflightsims/
I bought the Helo plan from him then modified it so it is also the fixed wing stand.
At 5:52 my Menu isn't rendering properly this is painful
If you have a lot of mods, especially mods that change the menu structure, that might be the problem. I've never heard of the menu not rendering properly. Must be a mod causing it.
ever since ive had arma last year when im in the sensitivity scree it doesnt show which axis is what, shows a few bars and they just flash if i move any axis and i cant adjust them
That's weird. Maybe write to BI on the BI Forums to see if there's a specific issue with your particular joystick.
Not that I hold this sacred power, I am prepared for the sky’s of Vietnam
*Magic Carpet Ride intensifies*
Ha ha, get sum!
i have the same pedals but when i bind the pedals my heli just spins around and i have to push the pedal slightly to correct it.
+ldee247 sure thing. Will do.
Great video! What about rudder pedals? What sensetivity do you use?
Forgot to mention that in the video. I have my sensitivity set to about 10-20% and no deadzone. But really I am still tweaking it. I was using RJJ's Agile Helicopters mod and that effects rudder sensitivity.
how do you get them dials in your screen ?
Thanks for this Video, just a question. Can you also show. Which keys you also mapped to the Joystick?
It's all personal preference, and I change my settings from time to time, but I ended up taking screenshots of my settings as they relate to the Saitek. Check out my facebook page for the photos.
facebook.com/feintgames
Add some curves like dcs ?
+Feint I have the hotas x and I'm wanting foot pedals under £25 any ideas?
The Howling Wolf Hmm. Save up for something better. Pedals for under 25 pounds would probably not be very good. Or, better yet, make your own.
Making your is a totally possible: aim to a fablab and become a rudder engineer : D
How do you get the dials on your screen that show you the information on your helicopter?
Options > Game > General Tab > Helicopter Flight Model (Advanced), Show Gauges (Enabled)
Feint awesome thank you!
thank you for asking that question! and thank you feint for the response! .
Cheers
+LukeAventino1975 I recorded myself via UnitCapture and UnitPlay. There are a bunch of tutorials on TH-cam on how to set it up. It's very useful.
Awesome! Thanks a bunch! Keep up the good work!
@Feint Im looking at getting a new joystick here soon. What would you recommend if not the Saitek? Thanks
But I can tell you my general impressions about some other companies:
In my experience, products from Razer are very cool looking but they never live up to their price.
Nicely explained, good voice. +1 sub
+Wulfworg Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
great video!
Check my other joystick video to see how to fix that problem.
Thanks!
I have a thrustmater USB Joystick and it's plugged in and all of that and it's not showing up
Need more info.
Great vid.. learned alot.
Great! I'm glad. :)
Thanks
Todd Woolley cyclic is steering and collective is basically the gass peddle
+peter a'beckett Check for conflicting inputs. Sounds like there are more than one axis mapped to a single input.
Amazing video. Did you neutralize the joystick spring?
In a way. I recently switched to the Warthog HOTAS
+Feint Great choice. Thanks so much for all the pointers. It's making my flying a lot easier.
Thank you so much
My joystick's sensitivity is unusable low on the x axis.
@@Feintgames this just in i forgot to turn off auto hover LOL
what do the graphs mean at the top of the sensitivity bars?
But I could be wrong.
what arma mod or setting to get those 5 dials during the game?
Go into settings and I think it's under Advanced Flight Model. There's an option to turn it on and off. It's not a mod. But to see it, you have to enable AFM.
If i don't have trackir what do i use for moving the head looking around?
And sorry for my bad english but i still learning it :)
Greetings from Germany
greetings from America!
I'm sure you can find something shorter:
www.amazon.com/Monoprice-6-Feet-MDIN-6-Cable-100092/dp/B001TKQOTG
Any PS2 keyboard extension cable should work as long as it's male to male.
+Feint Hello Feint thanks for the answer again but i found my problem with my stick. I looked to both ends of the cable and looked for the little pins. One pin was bent and i bent him back. Now the joystick works fine without any problems but thank you for your answers!
Greetings Nick
That's awesome Nick . I love those cheap fixes!
Do you have a print out/google doc of your control settings?
No sorry
After a few hours of tweeking I think I got it. Thanks again!
hey buddy, in the past 1-2 months ago i could fly a heli in arma 3 with my mouse, now if i use my mouse it only free looks. i even disabled vehicle freelook, still the same... u got any solutions ?
There is an option somewhere in 'game settings' saying something like 'vehicle look'... Change that and it should fix your problem. Sorry I couldn't be more specific, I'm not on the game at the moment.
+Shaun Rees vehicle look disabled, found it already the day itself. thanks for the reply
All good, I had the same issue and it was very annoying.
Do you know how to stop joysticks disconnecting whenever I go into the menus?
+jackdavidharris That's not enough information to make any kind of educated guess. Not knowing much about your situation, I'd suggest that you make sure your joysticks are properly powered, make sure the drivers are up to date, the usual. Also, try disconnecting other peripherals that might be interfering with your joysticks. Finally, I'd contact the joystick manufacturer and see if there's something wrong with your hardware.
Just one thing about the collective:
Please for the love of humanity - invert it!
I tried it for a few weeks, but ultimately chose to switch back to forward being up collective and back being down collective.
okay, dumb question, but what is trim?
It's like stability control for your car.
i have a pxn pro 2113 can someone help me connect it to arma 3 please
how do i enable the five indicators that are like a HUD
Late but that's the advance flight model
Could you do one for the logitech extreme 3d pro?
Sorry, I do not have access to that stick.
How did you get the dials on your screen?
gk258 It is an option when using the advanced flight model. I think it's in game settings.
With this set up I'm only getting 25%-75% collective. Do you know how to fix this?
+Riley Hembree Make sure you unbind any keyboard keys in in raise and lower collective (not the analog one), then delete the analog raise and lower bindings and rebind it moving your throttle the appropriate way for raise and lower binds. You should now have full movement.
Thanks for the video. Is it possible to download this config somehow?
no sorry
it won't let me use a scheme
I believe when you apply a scheme, it automatically maps controls to the different buttons on your joystick. So if you have a Saitek X52 Pro, it will map flaps to one of the buttons on your joystick. Gear up and down will be mapped to two buttons on your joystick. Eject will be mapped to a button on your throttle. Etc.
Very nice. Kewl, with your video and knowledge i could easily calibrate, set and configurate even my Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS with the Simpeds F16/c Rudders. Now Heloflying is much more easier, especially the Helicopter Time Trials! xD
Could you please also make an video to setup the TrackIR 5 correctly to work with the Arma 3 (without HRP), and the Helicopter Time Trials TT06-TT10? Because we cant use your fantastic Head Range Plus for that. All mods are disabled, or you dont come on the leaderboard... And it´s kinda hard for me to adjust it for the Arma 3 Helo´s.
Many thanks in advance.
Keep on!
Cheers
Ironblader (germany)
p.s. I also own an R/C Helicoper with an 2-stroke engine, The Kalt GS Baron. An old model, but it still flies ;-)
+ironblader or just upload your (an) TrackIR5 Profile for us to deal with? that would be great! Thanks :-)
awesome - thanks!
What is your mic?
Actually, I think it was probably the mic on my Razer headset. But I wouldn't recommend any Razer products. I've had bad luck with three of their things (headset and two mice)
It's pronounced *Sigh click. It changes the pitch of the blades once per cycle.
Nathan Lyon I know
does anyone have issues with arma 3 not finding joystick?
Did you go to settings, controls, configure controls, refresh?
when you use a joystick for arma but not the helicopters no i use it to gun on vics because its funny and hella accurate
Thank you sir
How do i start the helicopter lol
If you're using the advanced flight model, I believe you have to set up one of the keys to start the helicopter in the controls. You might also be able to start it in the quick menu using your mouse wheel
help me in 25 dec 2019... nice video, thanks a lot
You're welcome. Merry Christmas
Am I the only person who when I raise the throttle I start going down
Flying a helicopter is like balancing on a ball.
@@Feintgames ok thanks
@@Feintgames I’m kinda shocked you replied to my comment on a old video
in real heli the collective would come backwards towards you when it's increasing.
D goof of course
Now that I have you, can I please "bombard" lol you with a few questions. I'm new to ARMA but not flight simulation and notice in the A-10 the throttle "thrust" seems to be on full or off even though I've mapped it properly "analogue"and played around with the sensitivity It doesn't seem to make little if any difference?
Second question, is there a way in singleplayer to just get in all the different helicopters and just fly around. I've already completed the one showcase mission but can't seem to figure out how to navigate through the interface to just fly around a bit in all the flyers? I have all the DLC's
Third question, is there a way to move the cockpit heads up display in the A-10 close enough so you can actually read the hud without having to use the zoom toggle option over and over.
Thanks a million for all the information. i managed to grind through most of the interface now and figured out a lot more but these tips are invaluable to me. thanks again :)
da fuck is sicklick
