I’m excited for the videos that are coming from all this 500 series goodness. I just got into 500 series equipment. I will say not to be negative, I first bought the Fredenstein bento 10s but it had a terrible hum. I moved all the modules around even just putting in 1 module furthest from the internal power supply but the hum stayed. Luckily I bought it through Sweetwater and they took it back no questions asked. (Such a great company!)I upgraded to the Rupert Neve Design R10 and no hum! Couldn’t be happier. I’m a little jealous with all the new toys you get to play with. Have fun sir!
I have a bento no hum at all and sounds fab! Did you have a power conditioner in use? If not it will have caused your hum. The neve is amazing and definitely better quality, but if you don’t have a conditioner I’d really recommend getting one. They’re in-expensive and will save your gear longevity and reduce all your hum
@@alexhulme6135 yes I have a power conditioner and everything that is tied into my recording setup is plugged into it. I probably just got a bad one, every company has a hiccup here and there. I didn’t stick with it but I’m sure they make great stuff since they have more positive reviews than negative on the forums. Hence why I purchased it. That was just my experience.
Hey ! I wanna get into woodworking, especially to build studio furniture. How do I get started? What tools do I need? And how do you learn how to build it? Thank you !
It would be really interesting to get hear an in-depth demo of the BIG. That and/or looking at whether other effect types (EQ, compression/expansion, etc) can replicate the effect of the BIG.
Very nice - I’ve been eyeing those portico units and the AMS reverb lately. Excited to hear that on drums and vocals. That Wes audio interface looks interesting!
I'm really stoked about this series. Everything in there looks amazing but I'm specially interested in how good the Bento is, since it has been on my wishlist for a while, the Maag EQ and the Wes Audio stuff. Since that is what I'm looking for at the moment, I'd love to see you put together a vocal chain to use on the way in, that can also be used for other stuff like bass and guitar DI.
Barry I’m so thrilled you are doing this. I just bought my first 500-series rack and have space for three preamps. I’d love to hear your thoughts on good entry-level preamps for someone dipping their toes in analog after being in-the-box since I was teaching GarageBand seminars at the Apple Store 20 years ago. Warm Audio? Golden Age? Is the difference between entry level (up to $600 let’s say) and something like a Neve dramatic enough that it would be better to get one $1000 unit instead of two affordable ones?
This is going to be so much fun! Can't wait for the ssl eq I've been on the fence about buying one to replace my plugin. A shootout with the neve tape vs plugin would be a great video. Only thing I wish was that you would have chose the Cranborne 500adat for your chassis. Been very curious about that product now that I have filled my 10 500 series slots. Can't wait for the new vids!
This is perfect, I just bought a Cranborne 500ADAT and a SH Fredenstien Bento 8, nothing to put int hem yet but Im looking to get up a mix bus for hybrid more than an recording set up. EQ and Pres are on my list, so the MAG caught my eye, as did the BAE. Superb selection to get started there.
Great choices all around, I've been looking at every one except the maag - really interested to see how you think the WesAudio interface converters sound. Would be interesting to also see a channel strip type setup - running a piece of audio through the interface, into an EQ and then through the tape emulation, etc, Looking forward to the upcoming videos!
I'm curious as a blind musician, composer and mixer, how someone like me can use 500 Series gear? Could you explain on some benefits of using the hardware versus software from a blind users perspective? I will say things have gotten really accessible for me to do things on my computer, but I've always wondered how or what its like to control hardware like that? I'm sure its really tactile.
Very cool! I’ve been waiting for any YT demo’s on the RMX-16 in various 500 chassis since I’ve read it may not be compatible in all chassis. I’m guessing that rack they sent you is 100% compatible. Looking forward to see it performing
Barry i have a neve 1073. I want to know which compressor would pair up well. I am thinking tegeler audio VLA, wesaudio mimas and as a cheaper option FMR RNC500. Which would you think as an interesting option within 1000 usd.
Man I love the 500 series2(squared) idea. But honestly there are things you pulled out in this video that I dont need to hear to know I want 😂. Like the SSL EQ. It doesnt matter which console its based on its gonna sound good. Which I think the one you have is an "E" series, which is my favorite for sure!
Whoa Barry - you could do an hour or more on each module! Really looking forward to you digging into the 542 - I had 2 and sold them and missed them every since. Really want to know what you think.
I think you’ll love the Neve 542. Eventually you’ll probably get another one and put on your Mixbus permanently. Very cool stuff! Looks like Christmas came early😊
@@JimboJones99 Cool! Different than what I was doing, but will try that as a starting point asap. Think I'm going to buy 1 back asap and the other when I can afford it. Should have never sold my stereo pair.
Something you might want to talk about because it is kind of a messy kind of convoluted subject is the 500 series and power supplies and you being a woodworker like the idea of making a 500 series case and like what you would put in it as far as like a power supply to powerthe whole rack without having an issue. Just a thought.
@@BarryJohns + 💯. Comparing the specs on 500-series chassis units and their corresponding power supplies would be of GREAT value. Include recommendations for conditioned UPS options as well? For those who want to move from plugins only to 500 series options, adding AC-based noise from a crappy 500 chassis/power supply would be an argument for staying ITB. You’d be doing Sweetwater a solid by addressing resistance to their bigger-ticket 500-series options.
Like to see the WesAudio Hyperion compared with other Multi and EQs. I want to know how to Integrate the Calypso into the workflow! This was always a confusing unit
Excellent - I have always wondered if the 500 series could be great for someone who left audio years ago and restarting 20+ years later so I might as well be a novice because I truly am considering that I learned audio and electronic when tubes was the norm :)
Two obvious suggestions: 1) Same (or close) settings on EQs to do real time A/B... lots of talk about characteristics from gear folk, not a lot of right next to each other comparisons (we guitar guys do a lot of that!)... 2) Not sure it fits the goal, but how about those hardware units compared to their plugin counterparts? Anyhow, no need to respond to me here. I am along for the ride!
Interesting to see a lot of of people in the comments have had hum issues with the fredensteins and other companies. I’ve had no issues at all with mine but I do have a decent power conditioner! If you’ve not got a conditioner and you’re entering the hardware hybrid world it’s a MUST! They are in expensive and will save you from all the hum across all your gear! They will also help with the longevity of your units too
500 series is the way to go if you like variety with a reduction of space. They are still not quite as cheap compared to their 19inch counterparts. Two Neve R6 boxes because I did not want to skimp on durability and PSU, but those BAEs are top notch as with most of their gear. I have that SSL 611 EQ and the Neve 542. I am considering getting a second to use as a master bus. It smokes any plugin emulator as I chain it as a part a channel strip. I'm definitely interested in hearing the Maag and BAE EQs.
I love the 500 My biggest curiosity is about the Fredenstein rack. I have seen so many racks with internal power supplies that have induced hum issues in the last slot next to the power supplies. Even my old API had that problem and I was told by API that it was kind of normal. Needless to say, I don't have the API rack anymore.
