    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    Love this!!! I went onto your etsy store (because I'm one of those that like plans😁) and I was wondering if you could put a bundle/combo together for the 3 picket planter, the farmhouse picket planter, the garden trellis, and this 5 picket tall box planters? I'm newer to wood working and would really like to start selling what I make and all these I feel would sell like crazy where I live.

      Im gonna work on making the trellis tomorrow. I wasnt sure whether pressure treated 2x's were essential or not. i have untreated laying around, so i plan on just ripping those for now for prototype and making my jig. I plan on using spar urethane as a finish. Treated lumber seems more ideal for a trellis, but does treated lumber bend as easily?

      @@andrewsmithmilan1780 you can look it up in TH-cam. It’s an 18”x18” board with the 6” hole in the center. Sits at 10 degrees like regular cornhole boards. It’s regulation size and used for airmail tournaments and for training to get the bags in the hole without sliding. Makes the person more accurate. Has to set at the same height in the back with that same slope. Check them out, lots of cool stuff you can do with them.

    Hey brother just made one of these for the first time today. Had a blast and it turned out nice. Got a chance to use some cool tools and techniques - the taper and trim make this pop for sure and using the brad nailer was key. Added a couple tapered scraps for a shelf about 8 inches under the top and it worked well to hold a smaller pot for now. Will be giving a few away and Im sure peeps will be hitting me up when their friends see these. Thanks man!

    I built a couple of those yesterday and they came out fantastic! I was a little intimidated at first with all the angles but it ended up being a breeze. Only change I made was with the top horizontal strip. I found when picking the box up I was grabbing under that, and I could definitely feel it shifting a little with just glue and nails. So I put a couple screws in each one and it’s solid as a rock.

  • @ashokmoghe8035
    @ashokmoghe8035 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice work. Hey I have a quick question - I tried building one of these boxes as shown in your video. I have bought material to build more. I bought cedar pickets because they were the only ones available. I tried drying them for a couple of weeks by keeping them stacked with wooden stickers between them, and keeping weight on them. I live in California where there is dry weather with very low humidity. But even then I found that after cutting to length, these boards cupped and the planter box doesn't come together that well. Do you have any suggestions or tips on how to address that? I have bought material to build more. But want to find a way to avoid this problem before building more. Your help and guidance highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • @peterfitzpatrick7032
      @peterfitzpatrick7032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are better off building the boxes as soon as you get the pickets... this isn't fine cabinetmaking, allowing the pickets to dry is a guarantee for warpage...(is that even a word ? 🤔)
      Same with the "joinery" techniques... avoid dovetails at all costs... 🙄😂
      😎👍☘️🍺

    In one of your older you mentioned your old planer or shaper (I can’t remember which) being three phase, if you haven’t gotten it running yet before you buy a phase converter take a look a VFD. A friend of mine runs one in and old 3 phase Delta cabinet saw and it pretty slick.

    The planters look really nice. However, being on the tall side, I would be afraid that with a potted plant in them it would be top heavy and might fall over. Additionally, the planter sitting in water would damage the bottom. So, my suggestion is to perhaps build a footed platform in the bottom, which would raise the planter and add some needed weight to it. Maybe use 2×4 for the footed platform and maybe put a small patio stone or a brick or 2.
    Just my 3 cents....

    I have been watching a lot of your vids lately and just picked up some fence pickets to build one of these for a trial to see how it looks. I love the idea of using cheap lumber and milling it to make what you want. Especially in Australia at the moment, the price is ridiculous, if you can even get what you are after. I just paid $6 each for 4 foot pickets, so it will be a tad over $10 by the time it's done, but still cheaper than furniture grade timber.

    I am a woodworker/builder and have been for 35 years. I decided to do your trellises and obelisk with making them beefier and with the obelisk I put a weather vaine on top. However, people on Facebook are selling them for 10.00 and 15.00. So there is no way to compete with those prices. I can watch your new video on the day you release it and by the next day 10 people have whatever it is for sale in my area, and for dirt cheap. But the quality is so poor it is crazy! But people don't know any better that are buying them, they see the word woodworker and see the cheap price and jump on it! I guess the thing that pissed me off the most is these people are calling themselves woodworkers! Just because you cut a few boards and screw them together doesn't make you a woodworker! Take some pride in you work and do a good job if you going to put something together! They get on my face page and try and copy my work and say that it is their original idea....I guess because you keep telling people to put their own signature on these items and call it their own! Let's see them turn a bowl or make furniture....or better yet take a block of wood and turn it into a hand carved animal! It really gives us REAL WOODWORKER'S a bad name because people are expecting quality products not a cutting board with strips and cracks where the wood doesn't meet up! I saw a guy selling an wood/epoxy table that the epoxy shrank up because he used the wrong kind and he wanted 600.00 for it. Then a different person was selling a live edge coffee table that they had cut a cookie and never bothered to even sand it down, stuck legs on it and wanted 1000.00 for it! But these people are calling themselves woodworkers!!! You need to put in your videos that if they are going to attempt these projects to do it with pride, not to make a buck off of someone that doesn't know any better! I know you are all about the views on your channel so you can get paid by telling people ANYONE CAN DO THIS, when in fact NOT EVERYONE CAN DO THIS!!!

    Someone on some platform, (maybe a FB group) suggested using half laps for the top trim so that the gaps from shrinking weren't as noticeable. I've been wondering about that. Would be an extra 10-15 minutes depending on how quickly it can be set up. I just don't remember if they meant staying with the 45s or using butt joints.

    I've been building the "Farmhouse" style planters and selling them for $50 in my area. I did my first batch out of the 5/8" pickets, but even using your plans, I had to add an extra picket for every 3 planters. Apparently my dog-eared 6' pickets have a different dog ear cut that messes up the 3rd board. Anyway, my last batch I just made, I used some 3/4" pickets that my local Lowes started selling. They are about a dollar more per picket, but they are smooth. No roughness to sand. Saves me alot of time, which more than makes up for that extra dollar per picket. I just have to trim the edges of the back panels on back wall "B" to get them to assemble correctly. Also, they take the screws better than the 5/8 soft boards.

    If each stage is angled by 3°, each of the five stages need to be sized differently. But you describe them as identical.
    The fern needs to sit on a platform within the planter, otherwise it will drop to the bottom. But you do not show any interior ledge or interior platform in the planter. What gives?

    @JohnPratt 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Being both a woodworker and a gardener - my question is how you actually utilize it as a planter? I love the design, but it doesn't seem to be setup for any particular planter insert? Also anyone who's used outdoor planters knows that drainage is essential for a plant (and you usually water them until the water is draining from the bottom of them). I've watched the video several times and I don't see you installing a bottom, but this does sit flush to the ground. So the water just runs down from the planter and collects on the ground inside? Seems like it would be more effective to use as a planter if at least if the 4 corners were setup at least an inch off the ground?

    My boards are closer to 5.25 wide. I'm guessing that the building process still works the same? But the finished product is just a tad bid shorter? Is that correct? The more important thing would be that all of the boards are the same width?

    Solid idea of creating the TH-cam video and then offering the plans on Etsy. Unfortunately, you really need to revise your costs because today its only gotten worse. Wishing you the best.

    I have built quite a few, I bought the treated pickets and stacked with wood between each for 2-3 weeks to dry, but the last ones I built, the boxes seem to pull apart, there were no gaps between the sides when I attached the legs, but after sitting for a week or so, they are separating. Any idea what's causing this?

    In terms of Patreon, I think Black Pants Legion does it best. its a tip jar, that's it. no frills no specials, just a tip jar, You like what you see? drop a dollar as a thank you. keep it nice and simple for the audience and for yourself. plenty of people have gotten wrapped up in the issues of patreon and fullfillment etc.

    I don't understand why you attached the side panels with screws. Dried wood glue is stronger than wood and held in place with some brad nails and you don't have all of that metal showing.

    I did all my cuts per the plans purchased, love the way you set up the pdf. I assembled all my boxes, one out one in style. Went to stack them and boxes D and E are too large to be cohesive, the overhang on the sides doesnt allow the trim to be added. The first planter I used critical thinkkng and leveled the vertical edge sticking out, then removed some of backing from the wider Leg so it would fit. It works for now but the rest of the board is over hung, so will be facing away from the street and not visible to most. I will to experiement with shorten measurements for D and E.
    The 2nd planter i will try this on, hopefully get it all even out. I am also going to add a shelf so pots will sit instead of hang for dear life by their plastic edging. Dont need a traumatized plant 😂

      @ArayahIru 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great news to share, I took apart the D and E boxes, picked 2 pieces and started trimming small amounts off keeping that wonderful 3 degree off 90.
      Successfully got rid of the jut out.
      I kept the 1st tower as is and decided to add stain to specific areas to create illusion of evenness.
      Excited to continue forward now.
      If you don't experience challenges in life, then you can't grow.
      Peace and Love and Light

    Those are great looking and I especially like the look of the cedar. Unfortunately, all the big box stores near me show zero availability (both in-store AND for shipping) on the cedar : (
    I guess I'll be making them out of PT pine.

      Hey! Thats my portable collector that I use mostly for sanding. It's from rockler. It comes with the filter. The rest of it I rigged up to make it portable and overhead for the cords and piping. I'll have to do a video going over how to set it up. comes in really handy.

    Make it to fit a common size container like 5 gal bucket or the 2 1/2 gal mop bucket from Wally World something that can be found in your area . Just a thought

    • @MatthewPeechWoodworking
      @MatthewPeechWoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yea! The good thing about this design is you can add to the height and opening by adding 9/16" to the box size below. Im not sure but it may fit a 2.5 gallon as is. I tried all of the traditional planters and most worked just fine with the current size. Nice idea!
