- I'll be uploading a fifty-minute project of Dylan material this Saturday, so stay tuned! Here's an excerpt that I thought should be released on its own. I overdubbed the original audio from this footage with superior-quality soundboard recordings from "The 1966 Live Recordings." Also, this footage is from two concerts, and though I took much care to edit the tracks together precisely, you might hear a little inconsistency. Nonetheless, it's a haunting performance by Dylan. Enjoy this gem while you can!

I think I started listening to Dylan in 7th grade. Every time I hear him, my mind starts running over his lyrics and weird delivery, with all the joy of that pudgy little 7th grader. Bob just takes your mind on some wild ass adventure every time I hear him!

Nobody can sing quite like Dylan. He’s one of a kind. His voice is rough, nasally, boyish, mature and beautiful at the same time. He doesn’t get enough praise for his phrasing, pronunciations, pauzes. The mood he sets in his songs is just incredible.

I was two years old when Blonde on Blonde came out. years later I lived in a loft that looked down on the block that the cover (of Blonde on Blonde) depicts... and, I gotta say, what with our heat pipes coughing and also the girls on the D train and all of those jewels and binoculars... and... I cannot count how many times I went charging down East Broadway with the notes of this entire album (CD) blowing through my head as I raced to reached me dealer... and so, each time I listen to this and now especially watch this... I am thrown back into a world that only exists in my throwback times. I hope I am not the only one who experiences this.

"Dude," I was referring to his whole set, not just this one particular song in his amazing transformation as a wordsmith and songwriter. If you don't consider "Visions of Johann" as genius, I doubt, on the other hand, that you'll argue with the finale to this set, "Like A Rolling Stone" as being the real deal.

Richard Limbert No you’re right. So many concerts, so many years ago lol....The first time I saw him he was doing his kind of big band thing. It was fantastic. The second was in a 5000 person venue and we were maybe 15 feet from Dylan. The third was with Tom Petty, outside and was amazing as well.

I think lyrically this is Dylan's most beautiful and poetic song. That's really hard to say as there is so much that ranks so highly. But I love this song and this film of his live performance is a joy to watch and listen to!

Entirely in his own universe here. A lot of people can play and sing and write songs but very, very few get up in the ether like this. We're all lucky to have lived in Bob's time.
I could watch one million consecutive hours of '66 tour footage and I'm not even remotely kidding.
1966 dylan was so unreal. Nothing even close before and after, not even his own self. It's like he was an entirely different person that year

No one else could do this. No one other than Bob Dylan could create this awesome style of tone and phrasing. This is supernatural!
Takes me back to 1967, early evening & I was just feeling the gentle hellos of my trip coming on, sitting under the huge old avo trees in the backyard, with this masterpiece trying to hold conversation with me. The vibrations growing stronger by the minute before the curtains of the night were flung open & I was washed into another dimension not quite leaving the echoes of those visions behind.
Bob’s singing style, purring tone, and phrasing in 1966 was not just awesome but supernatural!
Some of the most beautiful lyrics he ever wrote. Seeing him sing this live is wonderful.
This song changed the way I hear and feel music. The mood Dylan creates puts you outside of your mind and body. Bob’s genius forces you to pause and observe, while being drenched by the sincerity in his music. A unique talent.

Bob Dylan…. So deep and meaningful. Dylan lived in a world of saying what he wanted to say. He didn’t care about his acceptance or what others thought he should say or do. I hope he lives forever.
The recording of this performance remains my single favorite Dylan moment. He was never better than this. What an absolute privilege to have been in the audience on that day in 1966.
I don't believe that anyone can actually come up with poetry like this. It's just beyond a mortal stream of consciousness. Explain me this, how can anybody write, " In the museum, infinity goes up on trial/and voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while/ and Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues you could tell from the way she smiles"

decades past I was hitching across the country like so many during that period, long story short I got a ride off a very bad exit ( it was bad cuz few used it) being a long time fan of his I immediately recognize Bob behind those shades and that voice that said you wanna ride? it was a old station wagon with some camping gear no visible sign of a guitar in sight and a large dog he called "Elvis" He was still smoking cigarettes then, thank God cuz I was a heavy smoker myself and he had a carton of camels and right away gave me two packs which I thought was very cool not too long after picking me up we stop @ dinner along side the road got to talking about my direction I was heading to his surprise I said I was drifting around he then offer me a ride along east for a couple days all expenses free/ the first nite he got a couple of rooms, I'm guessing so I would shower the next nite was beneath some stars in the parking lot of a dive bar/tavern/ when he let me out on a freeway exit he gave a harmonica in the key of c, a pack of camels, he drove off/stop/ backed up / got out of his car walked up to me and said, "Elvis said to give you a couple dollars"which turn out to be more than a hundred, I waved good bye to Elvis and Bob...this seems much too unreal now as I get older which baffles me, but it did happen and I think I got the jest of it right...tanks for sharing

One of Dylan's absolute classics, definitely in an all time top 10 of Dylan tracks, maybe top 5, which is some honour, considering the amount of classics he's written in a huge body of work. I love the '66 acoustic live version's.

Dylan is special and probably the greatest poet of our time & ever since I was a young boy even though I didn't know what he was talking about back then & I'm not so sure now, but he certainly changed my life for the better

Cut short....NOOOO!...Went to see Dylan on my own at Hammersmith in Feb. 1991...His mic cut out while he was on the piano and a roadie dashed on and pulled the mic off into Dylans head which knocked back during the song...We all cheered...Dylan carried on...I tried to see him at the back door after the gig to get him sign my book but he jumped into a bus and was gone...It was snowing and I missed the last coach home to Torquay...I had a long trench coat and went to try sleep in a doorway in Trafalgar Square in the snow...It was freezing so I walked to Victoria station to wait until morning...I was still freezing so with my last tenner in my pocket I searched for a room...I got one at 2am from an Indian hotelier who dropped his price just to help me out...500 miles in a coach, Cold, broke and no food until I got home...Was it worth it?...Yer damn right!

What do you guys think this song is about?
I've looked a little bit into it and think the following.
There are three characters in this song: Bob, Johanna, and Louise. Bob had a long time girlfriend and fellow musician named Joan Baez which I think is Johanna in this story. At the time he is writing this he was dating or married (not sure) his first wife Sara, which I think in this story is Louise. Now read these lyrics:
"in't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it"
Dylan is trying to go through the night but his thoughts are overcoming him and being loud and he's trying to deny them.
"Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind"
Its him and Sarah and they are together (entwined) yet thoughts of Joan Baez still enter his mind while he's with Sarah.
The rest of the song is very poetic and beautiful but up for interoperation. But I think him trying to overcome the thoughts of what he had Joan Baez while still being with Sarah are a prominent theme in this song

The acoustic sets from this tour, especially when his road-weariness is most apparent, have a haunted quality unlike any other pop artist...IMO.

This song, as released on the "Blonde on Blonde" double album, is just as beautiful but far more haunting with the addition of electric organ and electric guitar, reaching a crescendo at the end in which all else disappears, and he is left with only the visions of Johanna which have totally consumed him by song's end. Put on headphones and listen, in the dark, to the album version of this song, The way he is consumed by the visions reminds me of the building crescendo in The Doors' recording of "The End". I first heard Visions of Johanna when the album was released in 1966. The song's impact has not diminished over the years.

My favorite dylan era is around 2000 when he did things have changed, it's not dark yet. His voice and aproach to songs was at its greatest. The things have changed via satellite performance is one of the best.

I was born in 1965 but im a Fan of this artist at a younger age his lyrics so creative they tell true stories to me but I Mr Dylan would disagree with me ha and how anyone could anyone think of these songs and some people say he can't sing ha he's Awesome and he's Truly Magnificenty ,Marvelous and all of that tooooey !

One of my very favourite Dylan songs from that era. Here he’s putting every part of his mind and soul and body into these words and making this music. It’s divine. He looks like a sweet angel boy. The street scenes are interesting to me. I like the old footage and seeing what the women wore. I think I was with the Midland Bank a long time ago but think it’s now gone. Not sure. The final shot looks like cars driving the road to Calvary. All those telegraph poles like crosses in the snow. Not sure if it ever snows in Calvary. Lyrics aside, his intonation and the way he pronounces each word are mesmerizing.

He uses this persona sometimes where he is mocking. He exagerates his lip movements, and tilts his head in an odd way. He is making fun of delusion, perhaps. Or maybe he is just lamenting the loss of Johanna to the madness. It is such a wonderful work of art, that is for certain. I also have visions of Johanna, but I am too old, so this must be the beginning, it can't be the end.
BTW, my favorite uncle was a Frenchman. He was a wonderful man.
Dylan songs cover me with goosebumps and make me cry, and give me great joy and hope.
@@kenbellchambers4577 that is really interesting, I never thought of it as that deep of an artist choice. Kinda just thought of it as a combination of just doing something interesting/whatever the hell he wanted to do along with being under the influence of many drugs. I never thought of it as a character that reflects the song. He did this when performing Just Like a Woman but I suppose those exaggerations and characteristics of slowly slipping away could work there too (as with the majority of Blonde on Blonde now that I think about it). Wicked cool, thanks for that thought and sorry for the novel.
In a sense. it has very little to do with his nationality. He does have the "advantage" of being an American, growing up speaking American English. It is the cadence of the music, it's American music. Brits can do it, but it's easier if you are like Bob, and especially if you are Bob, from Minnesota.
