Interesting reaction. I have tended to skip over the part between the Field of Cormallen chapter and the Scouring of the Shire; it's nice to hear from someone who enjoys it. And actually one of my favorite parts from the last chapter is that little bit where Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is rescued from Sharkey's prison and everyone cheers and she's reconciled with Frodo and leave her money to help hobbits made homeless in the troubles.
I quite agree with you on Theoden's death and his relationship with Merry...so much more powerful and poignant than in the movie!

I’ve loved and read these books for decades - truly enjoyed your reaction ( except that I feel the Scouring was important and necessary)
