      It is the ancient Roman tradition of damnatio memoriae, which would not only involve never mentioning the person again but also removing them from all official records (though that tended to be a bit unsuccessful when they tried to apply it to mad emperors).

      Or just replace their names with ________ (pronounced "blank"). For instance, that one Lady Gaga song that featured ________, though Gaga had the sense to delete that song from her discography and reissue the album without the song. Maybe Hoobablank could do the same.

    • @ConvincingPeople
      @ConvincingPeople 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EpicB Given that, from what I'm seeing here, the backing vocals are relatively subtle and only one of the two singers in question is the real problem here, you probably could without much of an issue. That said, I wonder if some of the members wouldn't feel like they were trying to erase history to make themselves look better by doing so? Who knows. It's a relatively small detail regardless.

    @valence_drive 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    While I am aware that The Reason (the song, not the album) is super simple and cliché, and is one of the barest bones ballads out there... I can't hate it. I honestly can't, something about the song touches a very emotional core inside of me, and it does it consistently. Wrenches the heart, transports me to a different place, and may open the tear ducts. Even as a adult who's aware of how generic and pandering the lyrics and song structure is, it gets me every time. Music just be like that, man.
    Also, geez, the hell happened with the "Out of Control" song?
    > looks it up

      I'd say every era and genre has this issue in waves, and being alive during it, you really get to experience the troughs. I try to remind myself of that when I romanticise the 80s or even my native 90s, because there are gems, and duds, and duds painted to look like gems. And Sturgeon's Law is always in effect!😹 The pop charts have always been kinda clueless and flailing, but the mid00s post-9/11 sauce buttrock barrage is our unique cross to bear in this era.

It instantly reminded me of the kind of garbage they would play on AC stations, and because of that, I instantly knew it would be a hit. I don't think I've ever had a prediction go more right, but man, I wish I was wrong. It's one of the hackiest, sappiest songs ever, and the general conceit doesn't make sense. I distinctly remember hearing the title track constantly on the radio when I was much younger. It started fading away from the radio by the time newer pop songs started charting. Oh well, at least I'll never have to hear that song again.

    You know what's kinda bad, I have albums like this in my basement, because I started building my CD collection this year, and it primarily consists of CDs from thrift stores. After listening to some of these, I now realize why people got rid of them in the first place. One such CD is "Them vs. You vs. Me" by Finger Eleven. I don't want to talk about that album.

    My theory about bands like Creed and Hoobastank is that record producers started pushing them hard in reaction to the post-Columbine hysteria. People were blaming rock and metal for the school shooting so record labels started pushing these bands with psuedo Christian lyrics till the heat died down

    Douglas Robb from Hoobastunk did the vocals for the main theme of Sonic Forces (Fist Bump) back in 2017 and the vocals were undeniably the worst part of the song (not helped by the fact that the official sonic TH-cam channel posted part of the instrumental before posting part of the song with the vocals)
    When Sega decides to bring in outside bands to help with the soundtrack to Sonic games they can bring in some interesting bands and vocalists from time to time which even led me to discover one of my favourite rock bands (Zebrahead) but I never chased down what came from hoobastank due to the weird vocals on Fist Bump!

    I heard The Reason for the first time in like a decade and a half at a bar a couple weeks ago. And frankly, as I remembered like pretty much the whole song like it was 15-16 years ago, by a better band it could have been a pretty decent song.

    I literally got this album for free. It was in a box labeled "free," filled with CDs, outside of a house. I still hesitated to pick it up, but did only to indulge some mild nostalgia I had for that era of music. Listened to it once for a chuckle, and now it's on my CD rack between their first and third albums, which I bought used years ago for $1 each. The benefit of having such trash taste in music as a kid is that reliving your adolesence is cheap as hell.
