I was born in Hong Kong and actually learned the language quite well. However, as I grew up in another country, I lost the knowledge of the language. Starting with these videos do help a lot for recalling purposes. Thank you!
Yes that's right, the proper pronunciation of "five" 五 (ng5) is supposed to be said without open lips, the sound is produced while back of the tongue touches the upper palate. But nowadays many people say it with closed lips (m5) because it is easier.
The same goes for 吳(ng4), 唔 (ng4), etc.
I'm half Chinese from my mother who is full Chinese. She raised me and I grew up with the Chinese side of the family in the USA. My family speakes English here even my grandmothers learned how to. The dialect they spoke was Cantonese as that was what my grandparents spoke and they lived in Hong Kong for 8 years. My grandmother also knew Mandarin and another dialect from her original home area (not sure where). However my generation was never tought Cantonese. I learned a few words as a young child, like if we went to go eat Dim Sum the name of the dishes or if it was Chinese New Year or just answering the phone or how to great people, we did have friends and family that only spoke Cantonese so we had to at least know some greetings lol. But that was about it. Cantonese seem to be harder than Mandarin in my opinion but I like it more. What’s funny is different tones can make it mean different things, and I always seemed to get the number 9 wrong! Mom, uncles and Grandma would always laugh at me... if you say it in the wrong tone it can mean multiple different things. And one of them is not exactly something you'd like to say around kids, lol! 🤣 I'm 31 now and still can't get it right all the time! “Gau” ...I just said it out loud 5 times and probably got it wrong 2 of them at least lol ^_^ Grandma is probably up there looking down laughing at me that I still can’t get it right, lol.

I got Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taishanese all mixed up cause I never learned any Chinese apart from my mom and she'd always switch dialects HaAhAaHA I'm fine

Most of The word count 1 to ten is a little bit similar with Mizo languages, 1 yat - in mizo khat, 2 yee - hnih,3 saam - thum ( the spelling is more way different but the sound is very close) 5 Ngh-nga, 6 luk- ruk, 9 gau-kua, 10 sup - sawm(som)

I'm a native Spanish speaker and I find the phonetics of Cantonese more complex and difficult than that of Mandarin.

In the English approximation of the chinese word what is the relevance of the number. For example 3, is wrote in English as saam1 what's that 1 for? Also which dialect would you say would be best to learn for someone wanting to just get by and experience places like Shangai for example.

Cantonese is actually easier to pronounce than Mandarin..However, the writings are the same..I like both..But, with Cantonese probably would be easier and faster to remember..Thank you..🌹👍😊..

That's right! Some would say that 2, 4, and 9 also sound similar :) After all most of the Japanese language has a Chinese origin, so that might explain it.

Nei5 ho2. Quick question about the tone for "sei": the video says it's third tone (which I thought was mid-rising), but to my ear it sounds like fourth tone (mid-level I believe). The tones often differ from those in the course I'm using, which lists seven tones. Oftentimes words given as high-falling (2nd tone?) sound like high-level (1st tone?) to me. Any ideas?

Thanks for all your videos! Moving to Hong Kong in a month! I speak pretty okay Mandarin and write it, too, so this is both easy and super confusing for me :D It's like my brain initially refuses to pronounce words like 電話 anything other than dian4 hua4, after it took me years to learn this shizzle. But is is slowly coming around haha
Haha yep that happens, don't worry, speak more with people, watch some HK TV or listen to the radio, then your brain will get used to it! Otaku Japan did copy...definition of copy is to "imitate the style or behavior of". As for "their counterpart isn't even the same meaning let alone the same pronunciation" ---- can't type them all here but a quick google search will tell you there are plenty.

okay, number 3 and 6 are surprisingly the same as thai. and is number 8 the same as well? and i'm neither cantonese or thai, i'm vietnamese btw. i just watched the thai lesson with numbers. now i'm forgetting some of them quickly after jumping to this video. :(
Many of my Thai friends told me that the numbers are very similar too! I kinda think that the Thai language might have gotten some influence from Chinese, and there are quite of lot of people with full or partial Chinese ancestry.

But actually Chinese influenced Japanese first, so you could see chinese characters in Japanese. Then Japanese influenced Korean. and that's why Korean sounds so much like Chinese.I'm from Hong Kong :p

This makes me rethink that Thai, somewhat, might be possibly developed from Cantonese...
+Sakkosol Subhamanee the thai (tai) language adopted the numerals from cantonese, that's why they're similar. iirc i think there's only like one tribe in the tai-kadai language family that still retains the original tai numerals...can't remember which tribe tho.

If five is ng, why is pronounced as mm(closed lips) and not as ng(with the palette)
You're right, the standard way to pronounce "five" is with open mouth. But nowadays both closed lips and open lips are commonly used :)
is it a generational thing? will saying "mm" to an old Cantonese speaker make them confused?

L3nful Strictly speaking the former would be clearer and easier to grasp by a foreign speaker, but the latter is more commonly used by us locals
Like what Anne Ng said, we tend to omit the possessive pronoun or classifier in cases like this, especially when we're talking about things that are related to "me". For instance, "my company" 我公司; "my mother" 我媽媽, etc.
Both 我嘅電話號碼係 and 我個電話號碼係 are correct; but in daily conversation, you're more likely to hear 我電話號碼係.

+codrin dragusanu thanks for your comment! In Jyutping system, the 'j' and 'y' are different than how they sound in English. For instance, 'ji' in Jyupting sounds like 'yee' in Englihs. :)
