I had a 1959 model 99 as my first big bike. I bought it cheap and restored it as a labour of love, put many hours and a sizeable amount of money into the restoration. Left it behind when I left South Africa, but I never lost the memories I had due to my ownership of that bike. I acquired a 1973 Triumph T140V as a restoration project when I retired, I enjoy it, but it is not a Norton. Loved your bike, thank you for showing it to us.

I love the fact you bought your Norton in October '63 the month and year I was born. I have a '54 88 cafe racer and a Domiracer Lowboy replica.
Your 99 is lovely, my friend let's me ride his occasionally. I love the black engine, very stylish.

Amazingly beautiful bike, I've owned and loved Nortons for over 12 years and a Manx or Triton was always the dream bike.

Getting the weight out of motorcycles should be on the leading edge of technology, not just more HP. 😊
You did great work with that and got great numbers.

You have made a really nice job on that conversion John ! The only thing that would enhance it more would be to fit a pair of swept back exhaust pipes, I was lucky enough to buy a lot of Manx Norton bits when the race shop closed down and make up a Manx framed Velocette engine special, it went very well .

Matchless meggas! I had one on a 1960 Nsu Supermax, was all I could get to fit after the original silencer ( muffler ) fell to bits, used to sound good!!

I'm building my 1954 88 cafe racer at the moment. I'm using a '54 frame as I like the shape of the rear downtubes, with their wider top radius, which changed in these later Widelines. I am using the 650SS semi downdraft head and an SS cam which I've found makes a huge difference not only in top end output but delivery right through the range. Although I like all the Norton engines the 88 is my favourite in the cafe racer chassis due to being able to rev higher. I love the look of the Laydown box but I'm afraid the AMC is a much better unit. Most other parts I make myself as my partner and I have a business manufacturing parts for classic Norton's. I also have a Lowboy Domiracer replica and a Yamaha FZR1000 RU.
I'm looking forward to going for a ride wearing my Davida Peter Williams replica helmet signed by the great man himself.

Fabulous bike and beautiful front brake. John Hartle unfortunately lost his life racing at Oliver’s Mount Scarborough.

Abbas Ali Mitza: This is not a Dick measuring contest, it is about good taste, which you obviously lack, your Minger is 40 years younger and twice the capacity, one would expect it to actually go faster, but in 40 years time, when your Minger is buried in a landfill site, this bike will still be giving people pleasure, try to acquire the attribute of good taste.

Hooray for your lack of appreciation for the machines that were the groundbreakers that set the bar so high. No one would take the time to restore your bike in 70 years time because there will be no nostalgia attached to a mass produced item.
