Achenar had some of the best acting. His journals on Haven were really good, and his tragic character arc was _almost_ moving. The development team put their focus on the wrong things, unfortunately .. leaving us with a rather unsatisfying final product. It had the potential to be really good. I had completely forgotten playing this, but watching your playthrough awakened memories as I realized I had seen these things before. Thanks for posting it. I always enjoy your presentation.
I agree. The visuals, while stunning and beautiful, were focused on a little too much at the expense of the story, which is usually the heart and soul of a good story. Among other things, I would have preferred more out of Achenar's redemption arc, even so much as an expansion of his second Haven journal and memories. For instance: his concern for the repopulation of the animals (for continued hunting purposes) leads him to discover the beauty of life and he finds himself growing attached to certain animals and their offspring, which eventually segues to him regretting all of the other lives he took. It sounds like that's kind of what they were doing with the story, but it would have been nice to get a little more out of it, you know?
Yeah I agree with your comment on Yeesha. I think they should've filmed something with her at the end with Atrus, Catherine and you. Would've been nice to see what happened to the stranger at the end of Myst IV.
Well done-thank you for a great walkthrough. I was finally able to get beyond some of the moronic puzzles that prevented me from finishing the game many years ago. Keep up the great work...
Poor Yeesha. She had one of her brothers rip her memories out of her body to use it to trick their parents, and then comforted her other brother as he died as a result of saving her. That can't have been good for her mental health, to say the least. If she doesn't go through a period of survivor's guilt, I'll be really surprised.
Nillie And not just trick their parents, but murder them. If I correctly interpreted the story, that would be something she came to realize, too. Also, she would realize the brother (Sirrus) she thought could still be made a part of her life while she was visiting him, was already long, long gone. Very saddening.
Tbh that’s an attention to realism I don’t need in my games. Like how the Tomb Raider 2013 game sees Lara Croft rise from a scared frail teenager to a hardened survivor who is the first/only one among her crew/friends to accept the existence of the supernatural forces that haunt the island, capping off with her on the boat home commenting that she always rejected her father’s stories as fairytales and nonsense, but now realize he wasn’t mad at all. Flash forward to Rise of the Tomb Raider where audio logs tell us that she went through therapy after that trip, and that her best friend even left her. No! Not only is that directly contrary to what we saw happen at the end of TR13, but I also don’t want that kinda depressing shit in my games, regardless of how realistic the devs aim for them to be. I play games to go on an exciting adventure along with the other characters of the story. Not to see them go through ptsd or therapy afterwards. I mean if the game character did not find the adventure exciting, but traumatizing, then how is that supposed to make me feel as the player who guided them through it all and had the time of my life? I’m just saying I love my 3 dimensional fleshed out and relatable characters as much as the next guy, but I also think there is such a thing as too realistic.
Thanks so much for this and all your LPs Sven! Fourteen years later and I still come back to this and many of your other series when I want a good cozy watch.
Came back to these after the Myst 25th Anniversary. I have a replica Myst Linking Book and Gehns inkwell. As I am in the UK, lockdown seemed an opportunity to play the whole series again. I really enjoy your Lets Plays because they are so full of background detail and explain the puzzles in the most logical way. In my opinion, no one does it better. Thank you for all your hard work, brilliantly done. I am also relieved you confirm that no Mangrees were harmed in the making of this Lets Play. :-D
Weirdly, I thought the acting was massive fluctuating for the brothers. An example of a bit that impressed me was when you met Sirrus coming out of the water building the first time (when he goes "It's you!") It really did convey that he was actually surprised (because he didn't expect anyone, much less the stranger, at that point), thinking on his feet while obviously trying to spin a lie on the spot and trying to hide annoyance that his plan had been found out before he could lure Atrus. You could see the wheels turning when he did his big "so relieved to see you" speech haha Achenar's actor was pretty solid too, for what it was. The cutscenes in general did play like a b-movie though :P
Words can't explain my feelings for the Myst series. From playing the first game with my parents, when I was 6; to discovering Uru by coincidence, and subsequently II, and IV, to finally playing V when it came out. If only there was more... At least I/we have Obduction to look forward to, and who knows; maybe some day, they will revisit the franchise, in some form? Having now watched you play III, IV, and V; brought all the memories I have for the games, back. I found that most of your thoughts, opinions, and conclusion, are very similar to my own. I find that when I have a love/hate relationship with something; in this case a game, it is relieving to find that others feel the same way. So thank you - This play-through (More so than the others) _ that I do love this game, despite it's many flaws. It could have been a better game, but the parts that were good, were REALLY good, and those are the parts I will take with me. (Did I just paraphrase Atrus?) I will probably watch your Riven play-through now, and maybe even your Uru play-through; though I have watched another play-through of Uru, not too long ago. We'll see. Thanks for creating this, I enjoyed it :)
You know what would have been cool at the end? (Going off of Sven’s comment about Yeesha being at the end of the game) is if you saw some kind of foreshadowing of her relationship with the Barro and even hinting that she’s going to gain some power.
I totally agree with your assessment. This had the makings of the being one of the best myst games but they failed on the puzzles and writing, which is the heart of the myst franchise. If you could marry myst 4 with Riven then you have an unbelievable game
My mom played this game and did a good ending few years back when I was child. Poor Achenar. He sacrificed his life to save Yeesha. My mom started to cry a little because she felt on Achenar so much and I did the same on him as well.
now my sons are finally dead i can give me daugther all the attention and love she needs wooow dude thats a little coldhearted even considering sirrius and achenars past actions
Yeah him saying that always rubbed me the wrong way too, especially considering my own dad and how he remarried and has a daughter now that he pours everything into when all I got was a run-away dad at a young age.
I can see what you are saying, but I also think you are horribly misunderstanding what he means. For one he never uses the word “finally” as in relief that they are dead. If you look at him, listen to his tone of voice and what he’s actually saying, he is very much in grief BUT says that he can at least still find comfort in that his daughter is alive and safe, and that he can now focus helping her move on with her life. Also I know I’m replying to a 9 years old comment.
This is definitely the saddest of the Myst games-I find the ending genuinely upsetting. When I played it I never thought to go down and see what Achenar was doing, so didn't see him being poisoned. So thanks for all the looking around you did. Once again another great Let's Play. Thanks, Sven.
VERY well done. This whole video series was approached professionally and you made it extremely enjoyable to listen to. I can honestly say I would not have made it through a let's play of this game if it wasn't for your top notch presentation. THANKS!
Energy was quickly running out. Every minute counted. If he had put on the mask there was a great risk Yeesha wouldnt have been able to be saved. In his sacrifice, he found the only means to repentment for the past crimes he had commited...
I can see his point, honestly. The acting comes off as forced in places. But Achenar's final performance, and the performance of Atrus, are pretty damn good if you ask me. I'll definitely say, this game could've been twice the game it already is just by providing additional depth to Sirrus, by making the puzzles a little more about smarts and less about trial and error (so tedious...), and by making the ages even larger. As it stands, I personally find it an absolute blast to play anyway. :)
Few years ago, I couldn't get to the garden in Spire, as the game would crash. Anyway, after watching it now, I don't think I would've managed to finish all the puzzles. I think that MYST finishes with Riven. There is full closure, and this game felt quite foreign to the series. It's good that Cyan did Obduction from scratch, that is a really good game.
I agree that Myst could have easily ended with Riven. The first one heavily hints at a sequel, and the second one then perfectly wraps up, coming full circle with you falling through the Star Fissure, and the brilliant “perhaps the ending can never truly be written” line. The two form a perfect pair. As such 3 and 4 didn’t need to exist, but I am glad they do :-)
Very nice, enjoyed to watch it. You have definitely the tutor spirit as sometimes trying to explain the obvious things, but it is nice and in some puzzles i found to be good to catch up, in others was to slow as already know the answer. Anyway very nice and thank you a lot for a great work.
Myst V takes place in modern day (2005), so the original stranger would be dead by then. Although never mentioned in the game itself, according to chat logs from Cyan employees, the protagonist in Myst V is supposed to be Dr. Watson from the DRC.
This was great. (: You took the time to explain everything that was going on in the game and it was really helpful. Thank you for this, and I look forward to looking through more of your Let's Plays.
Phenomenal Let's Play! I got this game when it first came out but never came around to finish it. When I tried to reinstall it a couple of months ago I found that the discs been corrupted somehow so it was nice to see the game again and how it finished. The shame of it all is that - after being introduced to your style of Let’s Plays - I couldn’t possibly go back to all the others’. You performed better than I believed possible.
What an amazing project, I've really enjoyed watching this everyday. I'm glad it was as long as it was, because I was really able to appreciate the beauty more than when I played it a few years ago. I hope you continue these projects. And Thank You.
The end of another fantastic LP. I'm surprised it was so long. Almost as long as all of your Uru LP. But, a fun ride it has been. Really, a grand series, and a great narrator to go along with it. ;)
Another GREAT Let's Play of one of the brilliant Myst games! I never got past the stupid chair puzzle (even though I knew the answer. I did this on my laptop and it was probably the unpatched version, which equals hell.), got the mangree puzzle right afer a hundred friggin' tries, so I never got to see the endgame in Serenia and Dream. You have amazed me once again, therefore I say Thanks Sven.
Warning: Corny Ahead: Thanks for playing Myst 1 through 4. I watched all of them through you. My favorite game to watch as far as content was Riven, it had the best story out of all of them IMO. However, my favorite part of the Lets plays was the journal entry you had written and read as the stranger at the beginning of Myst 3. That REALLY put an awesome context to the stranger and made me feel like YOU were the stranger taking us for a good ride. I plan to watch Myst 5 through you as well.
Thank you so much for posting this entire series of videos. It was extremely well done and very helpful. I always feel let down when these Myst games end. Seems like the payoff isn't really worth all the effort it took to complete all the puzzles. The endings should be much better. It's like the characters aren't very grateful at all for all you've done for them.
Thanks for the awesome let's play! I enjoyed it although I couldn't stand it when you would keep on talking when I just wanted to see what's next. Then when you seem like you're going to go, you start talking again xD Anyway, I can't say I didn't burst into tears at the end with Atrus' monolog. It hit me like a train of bricks cause I started to think about my dad who died only a year ago. The part about beginnings and Endings is what I wish I could've heard when first dealing with his death. Although I'll never be able to get over that, I do still have to move on with a new beginning, especially with my now pregnant fiancé carrying my soon to be daughter. Thanks again! Now onto Uru since I'm watching these in chronological order.
@TheGhostlyboredom Even though as Dilandau said, they aren't Rand's kids acting the part, the reason they are so much better is probably because to the actors, this is just a gig, and to Rand and Robryn, it's a dream come true.
While from the perspective of a hardcore Myst fan, who expects the puzzles to make logical sense and be realistically intergrated into the worlds and thus make the world as a whole appear believeable, I can see why some of these boggle you. To me personally though, this is my favorite. All the games are great, and while this one has its fundamental flaws, to me personally, I feel that all the positive things that Sven himself touches on: sound, graphics, attention to detail, dynamic envionments, the tapping mechanic that adds another layer of immersion, and all the other quality of life improvements, outshines its flaws as game. Also I am a fan of the acting, the story, and Yeesha as a character. How she is this kind soul who is being taught by Atrus to inherit the family legacy, and how her brothers, Sirrus especially, hatches this despicable plan to once again decieve his family, take advantage of his little sister’s naïvity to get closer to her, and ultimately try to switch bodies with her so that he can take her place as the family prodigy. Yes, I know, it sounds stupid and silly on paper, but as a huge fan of anime, in which this kind of plot would be more or less standard, I love how crazy it is. Ad to that, Achenar’s redemption. I had really hoped he’d survive, but his sacrifice, although a bittersweet ending, was what gave the story its spice at the end to me. Despite his and his brothers past deeds, he saw the errors of his ways (despite being the “crazy” one of the brothers judging by the events of Myst), and having taken a liking to his new sister, he decided, ultimately, to go against his own brother, to save her. As someone who has a kid sister myself whom I was very close to in our younger years, this kind of ending just tucks on my heartstrings for all the right reasons. It may not be the best of the series, but all of its positives, combined with a story that resonates with me on a personal level, makes it my favorite.
it would have been awesome if you could save Achenar...he went through so much and transformed himself to a caring person through all of this isolation, especially in Haven. :(
@Lian1286 This is ten months after the fact but he did actually examine that cloth in her room (it's in one of the videos, though I couldn't say what number exactly). He just never referenced it after he got the clues for the guide in Serenia (I'd reason he didn't need to reference it for it to make sense anyway and the relevance of it seems minimal at best and more a "oh, we see you've been paying close attention to the smallest detail" nod).
Oddly enough, Spire was my *favourite* Age in this game. The incessant whining about it being ridiculous was unpleasant, though. I didn't much like Haven but Achenar's story is excellent and really made me like the guy, then feel sorry about losing him. Serenia was just utterly ridiculous stuff I'd expect from something for kids. I hoped for more interaction with Atrus. /Much/ stronger story than Myst III, though that's not saying much, even despite the standard pitiful ending.
Thanks for watching! Of course there will be other adventure game LPs in the future. In fact, it's unlikely I'll do any other action games after Mass Effect.
I originally played this game when it came out, but I never finished: if you save and exit during the memory puzzle at the very end, the locations of the symbols won't match what the hint guide says, so if you can't figure out how the puzzle works, there's no way to solve it! I think there was some other glitch that happened as well, I don't remember now, all I know is Myst IV is the only main timeline game I never finished because of my save messing up. I'm glad I found this let's play so I could finally see the ending after all these years!
@Phanto5692 Richard Watson isn't in the credits because he works for Cyan, and Cyan didn't make this game. He probably isn't in the credits for Myst III either. Cyan was working on Uru at the same time Ubisoft was making Myst IV.
@Dilandau3000 You didn't really look around Yeesha's room. There was a cloth in there that would explain what the lines on your spirit guide cloth thing (which definitely resembles the journey cloths) mean.
@mattmpg23 Something that bothered me about this game overall, actually, is just the way people talk at times... Miss Bad Actor says things like, "This is SO not good!" and Achenar says things like "Screw you, little brother!"... It's just so contemporary sounding, it really took away from the mysterious atmosphere. That song had the same effect to me - it sort of burst the isolated bubble of the Myst universe. Really it's a minor issue, but little things like that do matter
as good as the games are, the thing that bothers me about them is the inconsistencies in the height of the 'friend'. it fluctuates far to often, especially when it came to giving objects to 'friend'. an excellent let's play by you sir. one of my favourites. :)
When I first saw Achenar die at the end, I couldn't help crying. And for a while, I thought he was an idiot for not using the conspicuous breathing kits down the entry shaft, but now, I realized why he didn't do that: 1) they were last used 20 years back in the timeline, and so probably no longer work, 2) the close-up shows that one of the tank's meters is at the Zero mark (I think) 3) He just didn't have enough time. 4) no room left in the plot if he didn't die.
I had to watch this to get to see the ending. Did anyone else find this game crushingly difficult and REALLY illogical? I couldn't wrap my head around most of the puzzles and basically had to use a walktrhough for the whole thing!
Thanks for this fantastic Lets Play! It really kept me entertained during my bachelor thesis! It was great how you took the game and story seriously, but didn't shay away from pointing out flaws when there were any. (Even though it got a little tedious in spire) Also, although you are dutch (?), your voice sounds really similar to Paw Dugan, another Let's Player i really enjoy. So that's cool.
I greatly enjoyed this LP, as I have your others (I've been watching the Myst games in order, and will probably move on to other games you've done eventually since I like your style). Without having played this one at all myself, and lacking the greater familiarity I had with the first two especially, and looking back, my conclusions are: Myst: Outstanding for it's time, well balanced difficulty for an adventure game, some cool atmosphere, dated visuals but in a charming way that I enjoy. The setting is taken seriously but also runs with all sorts of whimsical notions and I find it intriguing and artsy even today. Riven: Also outstanding, some issues with the puzzles and the sense of getting lost and directionless, but the world looks great and feels realistic. What it lacks in Myst's sense of whimsy and variety, it makes up for with it's sheer realism and sense of inhabitation and in-setting logic. Also Gehn and Cahterine were excellent and all the acting was solid. I think I like Myst very slightly more but Riven is a true classic. Exile: This one seems quite great too, I think a lot of people underrate it. The navigation has a serious design problem in regards to the confusion about where you can walk, and it lacks the realism of Riven, but it has so much else going for it; the puzzles are cool, the environments- while a bit artificial- are striking and memorable, Saavedro is well written and well acted, and it feels like a good followup on the story so far, fitting right in and ending on a high note of acceptance of the past and hope for the future. Also it seems to be the only time up to this point that one of the games tied in very explicitly to information from the novels, so that's neat. Revelation: A mixed bag. The gameplay seems improved from Exile with better cursor behavior, that neat tapping detail, and more elaborate worlds that made use of 2004's improved technology. Other than the color spirit puzzle and maybe the navigation in Haven I got the impression the gameplay seemed quite good. On the other hand, the continuity feels out of whack, not just due to the major issue of the prison books of the first two games being retconned away, but because the implications of that for Gehn are not even mentioned, the characterization and acting of Catherine feels weak and completely different from Riven, it seems like a hard sell to claim that Atrus secretly kept his boys imprisoned ever since Myst and never told anybody besides maybe Catherine what was going on and that it wasn't relevant to his home security issues in Exile or his adventures rebuilding D'ni society, and it also seems off that both Catherine and Atrus are willing to entertain the idea of freeing either son, and without any oversight from Releeshan. On top of this we get weird thematic stuff with the spirit guides and dream world and a pendant with visions and some kind of "science versus magic" theme that feels odd for a series that has always accepted the basically-magical concept of linking books like it was simply a lost scientific craft of the setting. And a Peter Gabriel music video. And then there's the issue of all the recasts. But all this weirdness, while it makes it feel out of step with the series, doesn't result in a bad game. It doesn't feel like a fitting continuation or conclusion to what came before. I think it's best taken as it's own splinter of the continuity, a slightly different world which has it's own fun story to tell and it's own neat ideas. Also: I do like the direction they took Achenar's character. His journals in Haven are what made it. They reinforce what we knew about him in the past- that he and Sirrus are indeed serial world murderers- but show how he came to regret that and appreciate the lives of others and want to protect them. His heroics to save his sister are quite good. It doesn't make up for what he did but it is a touching and cool moment and I wish he could've survived in some safer prison to keep in touch with his family after that, and maybe had some contact with the outside world... but I wouldn't set him free unchecked. So all of them have been good, though I feel the first three are much better and more cohesive. The first Myst appeals to me the most, but I realize a lot of that is nostalgia talking; Riven and Exile are both fantastic and often surpass it. Revelation is the odd one out, but has it's own strengths and I like it. On to my first exposure to Myst V, but I have a sinking feeling about this one. We'll see.
Myst IV is also the odd one out for Ubisoft Montreal. Given that their other games are much more action-oriented, I'm shocked they were able to even make a good Myst game. Incidentally, lead writer Mary DeMarle and composer Jack Wall both returned from Myst III so I can see why there is quite a bit of internal consistency with that game.
I actually felt that Myst IV fit into the Myst universe until getting to Serenia, then I felt the game took a left turn and didn't feel like a Myst game anymore. Serenia felt more like it belonged in the Beyond Atlantis series, which I disliked, lol!
Are there any other bad endings? Dang, the other Myst games had some interesting ones. Only two for Myst IV? From the sounds of it, I swear there should have been one where you brought Atrus to Sirrus.
Simply awesome, i've watched your Riven and Myst IV entire LP's ty so much sir, thanks to you and shadyparadox i've accquired the 3 books and enjoying them as well as the games :). What is the status of Uru Live, i want to play that game :) lol
This! I'm not sure I'd agree about Riven being the best (though Riven and Myst are by far the best of the first four), though. I really liked that Myst III prologue too, as well as the times when Dilandau3000 just stopped (or executed some tedium or other in the background) and started explaining some bit of lore or telling a story. Maybe what I need is for him to get into writing novels and reading them aloud :D
it would have made a little more sense in the game if we the player had encountered Catherine in the game, like what was shown in Myst 3 to see the progression, but despite the lack of character, the ages from the game were great and was linear in puzzles, exploration and was not based on trial/error conclusions for the puzzles. but like all Lp's each one gives a different perspective and different opiniions
Awesome LP, me and my brother had a lot of fun watching it and learning more about the MYST universe. The game itself is pretty bad all things considered, but you were able to make it enjoyable at least.
That would require Achenar to already have a spirit guide, and there's no indication that he ever got one. (If he did, he would also have been given an amulet like Yeesha's.)
they could have made Spire work if they just added a furnace/forge built by Sirrus, and a source of fuel and metal ore... the presence of microchips however should not have been added.
I absolutely HATED The puzzles in this game more than any other Myst game. This had the BEST engine over all other versions though, and the best graphics. I thought the environments were well designed, it certainly didn't feel too Linear in Haven or Serenia. I didn't have too much of a problem with the acting, It did feel like Sirrus' had s bad plan, but remember, the only one he could learn D'ni from was his father who would never teach him, so, this was the only way to go about it.
Another great LP! Midway through I realized how nice it is that the stranger is kept gender-free ("oh, you are here", "my friend", etc). Easy but a nice touch nonetheless! Off to GK2 now, and realizing your LPs are probably the only ones worth watching :) And maybe vexxus5's too, but he is still a long way away from you in terms of content volume. Congrats again, keep up the good work! (although ME2 is probably too much action-oriented for me to watch, I rather you'd keep up with adventures)
I think the kidnapping screw Yeesha up given her personality in Myst V if she was not maybe she could have handled the "Grower" responsiblities better if not for her brothers.
Sorry for the doublepost, everyone, but I am often vague when commenting. What I meant when I said "dream come true", is that the Millers spent a lot of time thinking about every the game (probably?), and thus, they know Sirrus and Achenar so well, they act the roles perfectly. Oh and one thing I've been waiting to say for this last video: Time to stop watching all these LP's of Myst and go out and get a real life/girlfriend. But we'll do that... In the next video! (Dilandau said that a LOT ^^)
I think the ending works eather way. with yeesha or atrus. I agree with what you said about yeesha but i think they needed to end with atrus because its the end of atrus and the traveler. I like your lets play and will try The longest journey. Whats your favorite longest journey
@silverbilly Well, a lot of the acting in this game is pretty silly, really. But that doesn't really bother me... I mean, it was never a problem in the original Myst game: Sirrus: "Oh, YES! Yeeeesss... I'm FREE! Oh thank you my friend, my dear friend... YOU STUPID FOOL!!! AHAHAHAHA!" Achenar: *incessant high-pitched psychotic giggling* Gotta love those original bad endings. :D
So you dont like the game because of the improbable set of puzzels that seem to stop you every now and again. But I love Myst IV. The puzzles are very much harder than the others. And it looked amazing.
As for your comments on Myst 5, I have to disagree. I prefer the Myst 4 engine, but otherwise I really enjoyed Myst 5. The puzzles weren't too bad, the environments were often breathtaking, I really enjoyed it and felt the ending was great.
well just that you went pretty quickly through it and remember you did forget the cutscene of yeesha and there is a lizard you can click on but that's pretty irrelevant
Agree. I personally don’t see how the acting was any different (good or bad) than previous games. Also child actors often get a lot of shit, but to me Yeesha’s performance too was perfectly believable.
999 views i liked the game but i agree was not the best. i have to day out of all of the games riven seems to be the best... then agian i only so my bro playing it so i never saw all of it.
I came here to satisfy my nostalgic yearnings for this game, and the playthrough was wonderful - however, I wish you had restricted the scathing review commentary for a separate video in the series. It has left me with a somewhat bitter flavour....
The actress playing Yeesha, despite of here age, it better than everybody else!
Well in Myst V she's about 190 and a bit of a fruitloaf tbh, so yeah, it did something.
(Did I just paraphrase Atrus?)
I will probably watch your Riven play-through now, and maybe even your Uru play-through; though I have watched another play-through of Uru, not too long ago.
My mom started to cry a little because she felt on Achenar so much and I did the same on him as well.
now my sons are finally dead i can give me daugther all the attention and love she needs
wooow dude thats a little coldhearted even considering sirrius and achenars past actions
I enjoyed watching this way more than actually playing the game! (I burned out trying to carry the offering to the spirit guide.)
Which spirit guide were you? I was water, as usual. I'm curious to see if anyone has gotten fire yet.
@@JebediahKermanZaddy23 i got wind.
@@stutavagrippa8690 I'm not the only one rewatching this old series :D
the music in the credits is very sad in my opinion and puts together all the moments in myst where the stranger helped
I enjoyed this a lot Sven! Honestly your knowledge of the lure and witty comments is one of the reasons why I keep watching!
THANKS!
Why did Achenar not just use one of those breathing things.
I agree, though this game makes less sense than the others generally in my opinion.
Those take time to put on. Time that Achenar didn't have.
His guilt. It was a death wish.
Energy was quickly running out. Every minute counted. If he had put on the mask there was a great risk Yeesha wouldnt have been able to be saved. In his sacrifice, he found the only means to repentment for the past crimes he had commited...
great to hear a different opinion. i used to love myst iv more than all other myst games.
@TheGhostlyboredom Rand Miller's kids? In Myst, Sirrus and Achenar were played by Robyn and Rand Miller themselves.
Warning: Corny Ahead:
Thanks for playing Myst 1 through 4.
Then when you seem like you're going to go, you start talking again xD
Anyway, I can't say I didn't burst into tears at the end with Atrus' monolog.
They didn't need to kill Achenar off 😢😢😢
@TheGhostlyboredom Even though as Dilandau said, they aren't Rand's kids acting the part, the reason they are so much better is probably because to the actors, this is just a gig, and to Rand and Robryn, it's a dream come true.
Huh, the top related video for me is the start of your myst V playthrough. Kinda fitting.
I have to say, the ending when Atrus is talking to you, the pictures of Sirrus and Achenar in the background really add to the setting.
Nice LP. Top notch, as always.
Awesome job on this LP as usual. Thank you for taking the time to make these. I can't wait to continue... in your next video =]
it would have been awesome if you could save Achenar...he went through so much and transformed himself to a caring person through all of this isolation, especially in Haven. :(
@Lian1286 This is ten months after the fact but he did actually examine that cloth in her room (it's in one of the videos, though I couldn't say what number exactly).
Why would you exit the game at that point without solving it? That would be kinda weird and pointless.
Another great LP. Thanks.
@Phanto5692 Richard Watson isn't in the credits because he works for Cyan, and Cyan didn't make this game. He probably isn't in the credits for Myst III either.
Cyan was working on Uru at the same time Ubisoft was making Myst IV.
Very good LP and and very good ending. Thanks.
I wish Achenar didnt have to die
as good as the games are, the thing that bothers me about them is the inconsistencies in the height of the 'friend'. it fluctuates far to often, especially when it came to giving objects to 'friend'. an excellent let's play by you sir. one of my favourites. :)
When I first saw Achenar die at the end, I couldn't help crying. And for a while, I thought he was an idiot for not using the conspicuous breathing kits down the entry shaft, but now, I realized why he didn't do that:
1) they were last used 20 years back in the timeline, and so probably no longer work,
2) the close-up shows that one of the tank's meters is at the Zero mark (I think)
3) He just didn't have enough time.
(Even though it got a little tedious in spire)
Also, although you are dutch (?), your voice sounds really similar to Paw Dugan, another Let's Player i really enjoy. So that's cool.
I greatly enjoyed this LP, as I have your others (I've been watching the Myst games in order, and will probably move on to other games you've done eventually since I like your style). Without having played this one at all myself, and lacking the greater familiarity I had with the first two especially, and looking back, my conclusions are:
Myst: Outstanding for it's time, well balanced difficulty for an adventure game, some cool atmosphere, dated visuals but in a charming way that I enjoy.
We'll see.
*its* time.
Your thoughts at the end are a great opinion :D time for your Mysts 5 LP to see whats that like
P.s.: The Song at the end is so cheesy, but somehow it is really beautiful right there ^^
If we ever see Sirrus again he so going to be a vegetable.
00:12 Again the sound of a Riven Mag-Lev slowing down
Simply awesome, i've watched your Riven and Myst IV entire LP's ty so much sir, thanks to you and shadyparadox i've accquired the 3 books and enjoying them as well as the games :). What is the status of Uru Live, i want to play that game :) lol
@TrackManiaMon Skipped everything in Tomahna? What did I skip?
Another awesome lets play
I'm not crying!
@silverbilly Acceptable acting... until you see Gehn or Saavedro. Or the original Catherine.
I have a question, could Achenar have transferred into Sirrus's body? I know there wasn't much energy left but couldn't the traveler have tried?
That would require Achenar to already have a spirit guide, and there's no indication that he ever got one. (If he did, he would also have been given an amulet like Yeesha's.)
"...And so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."
they could have made Spire work if they just added a furnace/forge built by Sirrus, and a source of fuel and metal ore... the presence of microchips however should not have been added.
Great LP!
4:12 actualy the intro featured Atrus...
so it started with him and ended with him...
Though Aisha would have been a nice touch...
Damn it, I really wanted to see Achenar make it through...
Last game featured as stranger? Is the next one played by Yeesha or some shite?
Poor Achenar :( Even if it didn't end with Yeesha, I think it was really tender.
I feel depressed now.
I think the kidnapping screw Yeesha up given her personality in Myst V if she was not maybe she could have handled the "Grower" responsiblities better if not for her brothers.
you going to LP myst III
Sorry for the doublepost, everyone, but I am often vague when commenting. What I meant when I said "dream come true", is that the Millers spent a lot of time thinking about every the game (probably?), and thus, they know Sirrus and Achenar so well, they act the roles perfectly.
Oh and one thing I've been waiting to say for this last video:
Time to stop watching all these LP's of Myst and go out and get a real life/girlfriend.
OH NO! POOR ACHENAR!!!
@silverbilly Well, a lot of the acting in this game is pretty silly, really. But that doesn't really bother me... I mean, it was never a problem in the original Myst game:
Sirrus: "Oh, YES! Yeeeesss... I'm FREE! Oh thank you my friend, my dear friend... YOU STUPID FOOL!!! AHAHAHAHA!"
Achenar: *incessant high-pitched psychotic giggling*
Gotta love those original bad endings.
Bref-taking. I agree ;)
what is the name of that song anyway?
Curtains, by Peter Gabriel
didn't you cry at the moment of Achenar's death? :(
well just that you went pretty quickly through it
and remember you did forget the cutscene of yeesha
and there is a lizard you can click on but that's pretty irrelevant
I don't think you skipped anything, but you took at least two visits to do it
Yeah, I kinda noticed that you went pretty slow overall, yet skipped everything in tomahna.
A visually stunning game let down by lackluster puzzles that are monotonous and/or pointless.
Anyone beat this game WITHOUT a walkthrough?
I don't know why you criticise the acting so much, they did fine. Perfectly acceptable performaces.
