I kind of figured back in Haven when we discover Achenar is the "good brother", that they both still had to die. There is little chance Achenar was going to reintegrate with society after that level of isolation for so long. Had their prison worlds been switched however, I think neither would have improved.
@Blisterdude123 When you think about it there's a lesson to learn here. Early in the game Atrus's journal shows how he's wondering if Sirrus and Achenar have reformed since the events of Myst, and hints that Achenar may have but not Sirrus and finds some solace in the hope that at least one of his sons has mended his ways. Some people commit acts of evil, and although duly punished, do not change and continue their evil ways, as Sirrus does here; while others such as Achenar seek atonement for past transgressions and do what they can to redeem themselves.
If you think about it, Sirrus' Dream form seems to be modeled after the human brain. It's his mind, in a literal sense. All other minds you see are beautiful, but they are either part of Dream or accompanied by a Guide. This is what Sirrus' soul looks like. A cold, calculating mind with little room for emotional connection.
I quite liked Myst IV, it showed how things had changed (or not changed in Sirrus' case) for Atrus and his children. Sirrus, who in isolation simply became even more far gone and surprisingly Achenar, who in isolation became more human than he ever was in his youth, to the point where he gave his life for his sister.
Blisterdude123 I like those aspects a lot too. But I just don’t feel like they did a good job portraying it really. And the puzzles weren’t as good as previous games.
Even modern day breathing kits take a while to put on. This being set so far in the past and appearing to be one of non-Dni origin, it would take far too long to get it on and air tight and that's assuming there was any air left in the tanks.
@Dilandau3000 It's surprising that it's Achenar whose the one who winds up changing. I mean, lets face it. His mental state wasn't very great to begin with.
Ah, but instability might more easily lead to change. Sirrus stayed the course because he was more sane, Achenar might do almost anything because he's so unhinged. Though I think they also had unfairly different prisons to work with, as Spire was a rigid place where figuring out how to exploit crystals and build machines single-mindedly was rewarded, while Haven had an ecosystem that needed to be balanced and maintained and even had opportunities for companionship. So both prisons reinforced the existing mentalities.
Hmm... You know, Sirrus' Dream form kind of reminds me of a Metroid. I guess because it's attached to Yeesha's mind? Perhaps Sirrus' dream form reveals more of his true character than initially thought?
Aha! It's this time you can totally here the Riven maglev sound (with a few other things layered over it), every time you go through that black tunnel. Right?
I thought Achenar was a complete idiot for having gone into the chamber's heart to break the glass, without putting on one of those obvious breathing kits in the tunnel! I was forced to tears to watch him die, Achenar's too much of a nice character. But no, instead a crappily-modeled Yeesha takes over in URU in Myst 5! Dang-bang it Ubisoft, why did you do it this way?!
memory puzzle to me was the most annoying especially with the whole shuffle sequence. then the mangree sound booth follows that by a close second even with those patches installed it still is not very effective.
That is just horrible to say, I mean comparing Hitler to Sirrus? Think about the things both have done? Sirrus doesn't come near Hitler compared to his actions. It is JUST a fictional villain...
Sirrus is fictional, but it is heavily implied that he killed whole worlds of people and explicitly stated that he incited major world wars, while working with someone who tortured people (Achenar) and making himself sort of a cult leader, so... Myst IV doesn't really get into that as much as Myst 1 and Myst III were talking up, but I don't think it's that incomparable.
Let's ummm (several tedious seconds of long pauses between most of your sentences) do this. You complained about the persons acting? I love your Let's Plays but it seems that no one can be perfect can they?
The breathing apparati were RIGHT THERE ACHENAR.

Achenar: You have been, and forever shall be a stranger to me... live long and pros..
Stranger: Prosper.
If you go back downstairs after Achenar confronts Sirrus/Yeesha, and look into his life support coffin thing, you'll see his eyes are closed.
This scene actually made me like how Guy Sprung acted as Achenar.
Yeah, he's very different from Rand Miller's performance, but he's not bad. Especially contrasted with the performance of Sirrus in this game.
I always loved Achenar from the original myst, but to see that he dies saving Yeesha and that he was good just made my day.
The needs of the Yeesha... outweigh the needs of the Achenar. Live long and prosper.

and remember kids, that's what YOUR brain looks like in the dreamscape too!

In the German version, Yeesha will talk in Sirrus's voice after you pull the amber lever.

Sirrus has a bad case of middle child syndrome
Now if only Achenar was this trustworthy in Myst 1.
What's this? A blue page? Oops! Heheheheh!!!!
I figured he was going to sacrifice himself. It was the obvious conclusion for his redeeming arc.

God, this game could have been so good but these puzzles, arrrrgghhhh!

@colashanacogh No. Both Sirrus and Achenar are played by different actors here. Atrus is still played by Rand Miller though.
Sheesh... how is it that the game designer (Rand) has the best acting talent among a cast of professional actors?
4:08 I was half afraid of going through another psychedelic Peter Gabriel song sequence at this point while playing.
I think if achenar ran he could have gotten the gas masks and still saved yeesha
NOO ACHENAR!!!
Silly Old Achenar!
He should brought himself a mask.

It seems really stupid of Achenar to not use a breathing apparatus before going into the chamber and breaking the glass.
I always knew Achenar was such a Silly Billy
@ilikemario8 Watch part 66, it's in there.
Silly Old Achenar!
He should brought himself a mask.
Sirrus in the Dream World looks to me like a Dust Mite actually. Those things were always freaky looking to me.
He looks like an enemy in a space shooter game like Zero Wing. I imagine Achenar would be similar, but lumpy and blue.
5:20 Is that the sound of a Riven Mag-Lev slowing down?
If you look at sirrus after you pull the amber lever, he will appear to be dead (or at least his body)
RIP Achenar. Does he come alive in the later games? I always though he was the more level headed of the two, even if they are both a little crazy.
You missed to check Sirius again ,he has closed his eyes now.
@CopycatStudios Referencing Lolita was funny once. Please leave it at that.
