Grace, by one definition, means “undeserved kindness”. Think about that for a second. None of us deserve this kindness, this love, yet we receive it anyway. All you have to do is accept it and it will put you upon a rock that no wave could ever reach.
True, good analogy with the waves and rock as well... only after one accepts it, they must follow through with faith and works if they are to remain on that rock.
Ah nothing like an *archaic mythological superstition* to give you folks *self- loathing*. .... all living beings *do* deserve kindness. by saying "none of us deserve this kindness," you demonstrate everything wrong with religious thought generally, and Christianity specifically. it's a cult of victimhood, guilt, and servitude, by which you invent a deity to provide the forgiveness you crave, that you don't need... the same way a child invents an imaginary friend. grow up!

I’ve been a Christian for about 22 years. I enjoy listening to John Lennox, but this is the first time I’ve seen this video. I absolutely love this explanation of Christianity. It’s beautiful.
Thank you for sharing, I was a Wahhabi Muslim and thanks to God I became an Orthodox Christian. I was born in France, and grew up in a North African family, and unfortunately at the age of 21 I experienced Islam which really made me very bad, I had fallen into hatred of others. And following a journey that lasted more than 10 years through the different sects that exist in this religion (Ash'ari, Mu'tazilite etc etc), I finally succeeded, thanks to God, in freeing myself from this religion. after reading the holy gospels in which the figure of jesus christ really struck me. The goodness and love of Christ is truly incomparable. Be blessed

And why does it says the jews worship Ezra the Chronicler as the Son of God when we all know judaism never revered him as such? This is not an attack, i genuinely would like answers to it
Such a beautiful and true explanation. As a Catholic I am saddened that many think we try to ‘earn’ salvation through works. But it’s all grace, all a free gift. All we have to do is say yes and respond the best we can to His grace and rely on His grace to respond!! Anything we do has no merit in itself, it’s all about being in union with Him ‘without whom we can do nothing’. Why try to earn what we never could? When He gives it freely? Truly, our God is an awesome God. Peace be to all here 🙏🏻❤️
What is even more sad is that once you are saved, the works provide great testimony and add credibility. While you correctly pointed out, you cannot earn your way into Heaven, once you make it there, you CAN earn privileges, and other rewards by doing meaningful works.
You do. Catholics are notorious works based salvation folks. So is orthodox, and the overwhelming majority of protestant denominations (like those in Paul Washer, John MacArthur, and Ray Comforts ministries). As Mary Magdalene in "The Chosen" put it so concisely... "I was one way...and now I'm completely different. And the thing that happened in between was Him." For those hung up on "The Chosen" being unbiblical, here's Paul's writing, to the same effect: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17
As a Messianic Jew who believes in yahushua, I can tell you this: it isn't by doing Torah or keeping the mitzbah, that I have salvation, it is because the free merciful compassionate gift of salvation, that I want to do both, I want to graft into the tribe of Yahudah.
Jews are missing the new covenant God promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Ezek.36:27. God said He would put His Spirit in us (Ezek.), and He would write His laws on our heart and inscribe them on our minds. He would be God to us and we would truly be a people to HIm, and we could all know Him personally. This is possible because God found a way that He could righteously forgive our sins. @@cipherklosenuf9242 Wrong. If nothing else, we know that He wrote something in the dirt that made the Pharisees condemning an adulterous woman (wanting to stone her) to walk away peacefully. "Let he, who is without sin, cast the first stone." Aside from that, we actually have far more in the way of historical documents and manuscripts from eyewitnesses about the life, teachings and resurrection of Jesus (including from non-Christian, Roman sources) than we have for literally *any* other ancient historical figure (including any of the Roman emperors or even Alexander the Great). If you can't accept Jesus because of lack of papers penned directly by Him, then, to be intellectually honest, you'd have even *less* reason to believe in *any* other ancient historical figure (given that most of what we know was written about hundreds of years later; by people summarizing their own history books).
Then what is repentance? Accountability for your actions. But you cannot accept accountability if you continue to relive your sins. It’s by grace we are accepted and by merit we leave the world a better place. If you respect our lord you’d want that.

I am an atheist living in a Muslim country. Even though I have no faith, I find Dr. Lennox's explanation very moving. I think, if one day I begin to have faith, I would follow a similar path to what he describes.
My husband and I both accepted salvation close to one another. On the brink of prideful divorce. We learned of Jesus' forgiveness of us, and how to forgive one another at that time. Though it's a long process of course to be better at that...but it's a true life changer. All of it, not only the forgiveness and grace but that's the start. ❤ People even have such issues with Genesis....yet it's still forgiveness and grace. I don't know any person but God that would forgive people like we see it in the Bible and our lives. ❤
I wonder, why do we need to believe that Jesus is God to be saved? Isn't it enough if we say "we accept Jesus as savior if he is god, even though we're not convinced he is god"?
We cannot accept Jesus is the Saviour if we do not believe He is God. That’s why to be saved we need to believe Jesus is God and that He is who He says He is!
Three years I can’t remember being disappointed by what John Lennox has to say about God and his son, Jesus Christ, and that great and merciful love for us

In one sense you are correct as at baptism our past sins are forgiven, and many call that being 'saved' as they are in a covenant, and good works are the fact of living by faith for salvation. OSAS is one way of looking at baptism. So the entire premise is, if we start with all the presuppositions of Christianity, then Christianity is the best way to make sense of the world and our relationship to whatever is eternal and transcendent. It’s completely circular. The problem is, if those aren’t your presuppositions, if your world isn’t constructed around -innocence(grace)/knowledge(sin) -corrupted by design/forgiven- dichotomies, then the arguments themselves become incoherent. And since the Christian worldview is a prerequisite for the argument to be coherent, then it occurs to me that this isn’t about making a rational argument, it certainly isn’t structured to be persuasive to a nonbeliever. This instrument (apologetics) exists solely to keep Christians from straying too far afield in their search for truth. An intellectual fence that keeps the herd corralled.
Oh honey, if I may recommend a dictionary. Your definitions of innocence & knowledge are wrong. You got apologetics wrong. You missed the point. Oh, and where words are many (your comment), sin is not absent 🤣 You're welcome.
@@wwm8 It’s always fun when a person thinks that the best way to make their argument is to affect a patronizing tone. Be serious. Even though Christians will argue that the sin of Adam and Eve was disobedience, it isn’t how they behave. Adam and Eve were innocent and then they ate of the tree of knowledge and fell into sin. All Christianity is oriented this way. When a woman has had sex she has “known” a man and is no longer innocent. And whether Orthodox Christians do it or not, all evangelical teaching of children is about the preservation of innocence through the preservation of ignorance. Because they don’t want their children “corrupted” by worldly knowledge. And apologetics has always been geared toward assuaging the doubts of the believer, not persuading the non-believer.
I am a Christian because… 1) I am reborn (John 3:3) 2) In rebirth I have been given a heart of flesh to replace my heart of stone (Ezekiel 11:19-20; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 10:15-18) 3) The Holy Spirit dwells within my new heart (1 Corinthians 3:16 et.al.) These 3 spiritual truths are what set Christianity apart from all the world’s religions. NO OTHER RELIGION MAKES THESE CLAIMS.
I mean, Buddhism does the rebirth thing. But they don't work with grace ...it's works-based only. Also Buddhism and most other religions say they believe in Jesus in some way. What exactly makes Christianity a religion and not a way of living a life of the Spirit with Christ Jesus, in God, is simply because a religion is observed with many different sets of rules and rituals. Whereas, being just a Believer makes fellowship easy and accessible with God the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ the Son, by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. Not in or of works of any kind by you, but by simply standing on His finished work of salvation on the cross of Calvary.
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. We are sinners. Still, God humbled himself, took on human form, lived a perfect life, and died for our sins. God loves us. @@dman7668 The works show we are saved. Salvation/justification comes by believing (having faith) in the blood that Christ (the Lamb of God) shed for the forgiveness of sins and the finished work that Christ completed on the cross also that he rose on the third day conquering death. Works come after we are saved and once we are saved we are always saved, because nothing or no one can snatch us out of his hand. The nuances of Christianity really do set it apart. Acceptance and forgiveness are something every soul needs but I am not sure where else they can find it.
4:06 Why did Christianity need a human sacrifice ( crucifixion of Jesus ) for supposed sins ?? And if the promise of an ever lasting life wasn't on the cards, no one would give this nonsense the time of day.
When you are good friends with someone and you break their trust, the only way to gain this trust back is if you show your friend your love for him in such a way he would be able to accept you as his friend again. Now imagine that you broke the trust of your friend on a such a way, it was such a deception and betrayal of your friendship, that the only way to restore your relationship was for you to demonstrate your love in the most extreme way, which would be dieing for him. In my comparison you are Humanity and your friend is God, however we didn't die for God and yet our relationship is kinda restored. Because no human can possibly compensate for the betrayal done by Humanity, technically restoring our relationship with God would be impossible. But God does the unthinkable, He makes Himself a man, because only a man can pay for the mistakes of men, and He sacrifices Himself, He gives His life for us so we can have a relationship with Him again. God didn't need to save us, God was the one that was betrayed, yet His love for us saved us. As Jonh Lennox said, God already accepts us, it's whether we accept Him or not that is the question. What about Eternal life? Well, with God winning over death it self, He made it so death is nothing but a physical condition and we are able to join Him in eternal happiness if we truly wish to.

I think Mr Lennox should stick with comedy because has a warped concept of Christianity all the love and going to heaven etc read and see the other side of midnight
Jesus actually did not teach that. He taught salvation was through faith, repentance, obedience and works after God's grace and mercy which is found in his parables and this is what all prophets taught before him as well. It wasn't through him you were saved, but following and obeying him in worshipping God alone doing those things that saved.
He touches on a subject I find comforting. Most people (now and then) know and wish for the golden rule to be one of their moral codes of conduct. What I dislike, at times, is that some of the different faiths will proclaim that their faith alone owns this rule, when as he said, it was well established long before those religions saw the light of day.
what a brilliant explanation that describe what makes Christianity different to other religions. We were accepted not because our deeds or righteousness but only because the Grace and kindness of Jesus Christ alone.
Most people try to decipher religion intellectually, hence come up with different arguments and believes. The best way to approach religion is by practicing it. Every religion has this in common "PRACTICE' & "FAITH". Faith word itself means "something that you can't explain yet experience". Therefore, practice and have faith and you'll come to find out that there are changes happening around you and within you whether you're Hindu, Muslim or Christian. Also you'll realize whenever you defer from it you'll fell imbalance, most people ever realize this because they never experienced the balance between inner world and outer world.
Awesome answer from Dr Lennox, really a good one. He no doubt got the subtext and proffound meaning of JC. Now, he still keeps the religious lens that taints his findings, but still, really valuable findings. In short, JC came to SHOW you the way, not how to "please" nor "apeace" god. JC shows you that you already are accepted by god, by the source of all, by the origin of life and everything that exists; and to get closer to it you only need to work on yourself, on your character, your mind, your habits,... your whole being, to the best of your means while KNOWING you already suffice to such a task. Good luck.
I read philosophy at a great university in the UK, and I had a brilliant ethics tutor. I recall him saying “what would you say to someone whose code of ethics was based on Nazi ideology in world war 2? Would you respect his values”? The answer is obvious, so this guy doesn’t really know what he’s talking about in this context. If he’d read and understood Wittgenstein, he would know that moral codes and religious prescriptions are completely different “language games”. Having said that, I think he’s absolutely right about Christianity.
Given that Hitler was a devout Catholic, and the Wehrmacht had "Gott mit uns" on their uniform belts, one could make a valid claim that Nazism and Christianity are linked
Hitler’s words and his actions prove any claim to being a follower of Christ was certainly far from truth. Scripture tells us that a Believer in Christ shall ”be known by their fruit.” The words and actions of Hitler when compared to Jesus’ life should lay to rest any idea of Hitler’s religious leanings.
@@themancuniancandidate2744 how can Nazism be linked with a religion that is diametrically opposed to it? Did they advocate for loving your neighbor as yourself? For following the Ten Commandments? @@jl4018 Ok. If you're going to invoke scripture, then you need to accept the double edged sword that comes with doing so. Nowhere in the NT does it specifically set the 10 Commandments aside from no longer applying under the New Covenant. So you either lose ALL 613 Mosaic Laws, or you keep the big ten that you seem so fond of, and we also get to keep the ones you Christians like to sweep under the rug; you know the ones that promote or allow such niceties as mass murder, rape, genocide, incest, slavery etc. The Nazis did plenty of the above, and the scripture you seem so keen on specifically allows them to do so. So, what's it gonna be? Keep the big ten and then we get all those not so nice laws too? Or lose all 613 Mosaic laws(inc the big ten) under the New Covenant, and remove one of the cornerstones of Christianity?

Such a beautiful and true explanation. As a Catholic I am saddened that many think we try to ‘earn’ salvation through works. But it’s all grace, all a free gift. All we have to do is say yes and respond the best we can to His grace and rely on His grace to respond!! Superbly put.
None of us were worthy..Salvation is all of Him..all we do really is believe..thats our very 1st part. Nothing can be added..otherwise it's not by grace we are saved. And we'd have something to boast about. It's purely a gift, our salvation!

Catholic here, and it is about grace. Goesfastandfar is not far off. The Catholic Church has never taught that we can be saved by works. The speaker’s analogy is misplaced as representative of Catholicism. We don’t work our way to heaven. That said, works definitely matter.
Please don’t hold me to this but I believe scripture speaks about good deeds/works being accounted for at death some 10+ x’s? To me its only fitting in justice that in our bad deed, the vise of sin, we must repent. So too, in virtue of holiness, good deeds are required by the denial of self in action for love of God and neighbor. God knows our heart and our walk with Him.
As a Catholic who is grateful to be moving deeper into the love of God and stronger faith, my desire to be more virtuous is growing and by his grace my sin will be lessened because grace perfects nature and He is perfecting me if I am willing to cooperate.
May the grace of our Lord be poured into all of our hearts!

As the Bible says, there will be those crying out to Jesus "we did so many good works in your name!" And he will turn them away saying "you never knew me!" 😢 Many Catholics are choosing pride and deception over truth and others that are into "works-based" don't KNOW the Word. It's very sad.

Why didn't Saint Paul Echo what you wrote about now we don't work towards salvation? 🤔
In one sense you are correct as at baptism our past sins are forgiven, and many call that being 'saved' as they are in a covenant, and good works are the fact of living by faith for salvation. OSAS is one way of looking at baptism.
However having past sins forgiven is a promise not confirmed until those baptised die, those who backdlide into sin break the contract and give up their promise.

So important to focus on 'the forgivess' of our sins rather than on being sinners, which makes us feel guilty and unloveable all of our lives!
I am a Christian because…
1) I am reborn (John 3:3)
2) In rebirth I have been given a heart of flesh to replace my heart of stone (Ezekiel 11:19-20; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 10:15-18)
3) The Holy Spirit dwells within my new heart (1 Corinthians 3:16 et.al.)
These 3 spiritual truths are what set Christianity apart from all the world’s religions.
NO OTHER RELIGION MAKES THESE CLAIMS.
Each religion makes its own claims that make them unique.
I mean, Buddhism does the rebirth thing. But they don't work with grace ...it's works-based only. Also Buddhism and most other religions say they believe in Jesus in some way. Lol That is what's interesting to me. ❤ And all religions I know of have ideas that mimick Christianity/Judaism in substantial ways. Or they seem to worship fallen angels. It's one of the other, or a mix. There's records of the Jewish people honoring God with animal sacrifices before the Paegans. Unless you buy into the b.s. of carbon dating where they claim they know civilizations that are hundreds of thousands of years old. 😂
@@downshift4503But why do most religions acknowledge Jesus as real in some way? 🤔 Also why do all religions I know of either seem to worship fallen angels and/or twist Christianity/Judaism? And then spread across the Earth...like the Bible says. Weird.

The nuances of Christianity really do set it apart. Acceptance and forgiveness are something every soul needs but I am not sure where else they can find it.
Any religion with any unique quality is "set apart"

Jesus actually did not teach that.

Good luck.
He's deluded and so are you. Your claimed Jesus is a myth with no evidence to support your belief.
@@fredhall5038 A No True Scotsman fallacy? Really?
@@themancuniancandidate2744 how can Nazism be linked with a religion that is diametrically opposed to it? Did they advocate for loving your neighbor as yourself? For following the Ten Commandments? For repenting of sins or to turn the other cheek? What tenets of Christianity were demonstrated by Nazis? Perhaps they were taking care of all orphans and widows and I was unaware of it but I had not heard of any pro-Christian Nazi ideals.
Not a Christian but its crazy how much hate they get especially as they are usually the most forgiving and understanding people on the planet. I think that says a lot about how hateful and anti human todays ppl are.
Charming explanation from a sincere believer. Blessed are the gullible.
First of all, a very good speaker, secondly I rather appreciated what he said. I do not know if my views on religion are right or wrong and I am in no hurry to find out, but this man made a very good point on relationships which I feel we can all respect
Found this channel by "accident" i love how God does that!
Thank you....i can relate to the cookbook analogy ( i could basically only boil pasta when i got married)
My husband of 46 years accepted me from the start. By the way...im a pretty good cook now....
