      I don't think I've heard any channel mention this yet, but the codes included are not for each deck. Each code unlocks both decks. So if you buy this to play with a friend, you both get both decks.

      @@thirdcoast6513 that's just single card in 60. you see maybe 20 cards each game (13 turns) so you will see it in 1/3 of the games. mordor has 4 spot removals and after first lost game mordor player will just keep one in hand to answer aragorn&arwen and mitigate their effect.
      this is the issue prof mentioned - lack of playsets create more unpredictable games which is not what decks in constructed formats are trying to achieve.

  • @ZackofSpades
    @ZackofSpades ปีที่แล้ว +10

    One of the reasons I enjoy playing decks like this is usually because of the lack of playsets. While playsets are the "professional" way to play Magic, and are certainly required in any real competitive setting, the fun tends to drop out of the bottom of the barrel for me when the focus of the deck becomes so razor-sharpened that the variety of the cards you can draw falls to maybe 10 or so.
    It feels better for me to play a luck-based game by the seat of my pants rather than have a solid set-in-stone combo win condition that I'm trying to draw into. I'd rather test my tactics than my strategy, and when all my games start feeling the same, it bores me.
    Granted, if you're playing for money, I can see the appeal in focusing on consistency, as those game-winning combo conditions are more important, but to me it's just an entirely different game, and it's not one that I'm into.
    Sealed, Draft, and Commander for life!

    I have to say that I think this product should be viewed as a "teacher product". Let's be serious for a minute. How many people walk into an LGS with a friend and say "ooh ,let's learn to play magic", versus someone who already plays and buys this to teach someone else how to play. The value of the cards is enough to tell the new guy "Hey, don't just put a rubber band around your deck and throw in your backpack", like me and my buddies did in '95 . It's an opportunity to teach value and collectabilty as well as game play.

    • @DrolNomed
      @DrolNomed ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly, the value but also the relatively high complexity of the decks makes it hard for me to believe that two completely new players will fully understand the game.

I've not yet had the time to play with the decks but i've had a quick flick through both and I really like how focused both decks are. • @mattgopack7395
    @mattgopack7395 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For newer players, I think it's a positive to not have too many 3 and 4 ofs. It's a lot more fun to have varied decks IMO - and it gives more variety to the games compared to a usual constructed deck (which is important if these are designed to be played against each other a good bit).
    I know that I bounced off more competitive magic (and still am not into the most consistent/fast formats) because the repetitiveness of the decks appealed to a different side of play than the more casual, varied playstyles I was enjoying with battle decks. It also helped me early on with stealing a few wins from my more experienced friend due to variance.
    Having more constructed decks would cut down on the number of different cards they had, make games more similar, and not appeal to the same demographic overall. So I think I agree with them not going with the 3/4 ofs you would prefer.

    After not playing MtG since I was a child (25+ years ago), I picked up the starter due to the LotR theme. I absolutely love it and feel like two decks for $25 is a great value. I do feel the opposite of you on not having playsets of cards in the starters because it allows there to be more variety in what you get to see every game. And when I decided to purchase singles and upgrade the two decks, I was able to think about what gameplay mechanics of the decks to I want to focus on like do I want to go all in on the orc army amassing cards (heck yes). It works from a business standpoint too, since even though I was more than happy to leave the decks as they came if I wanted additional copies I'd have to purchase more product. My one complaint is that the forest/plains deck doesn't have a Legolas.

    I am an established player who bought the LotR starter deck to play with my mom, who is new. I’m thrilled that these decks existed, because I wanted some sort of LotR-themed precon decks to play with her, and commander decks have so many extra cards and mechanics to learn. But even these decks had an awful lot going on for a brand new player. We had fun, but I have a hard time imagining two brand new players sitting down with this product and having any hope of figuring out how to play.

      It tooked me ~6 hrs to finish all the tutorials and beat all color challenges in MtGA to get a grasp of the basic game. Played IRL with another knowledable player using the LotR starter decks, and I found it still a tid more complicated than what I experienced with MtGA. Probably because of lack of automatic upkeep, counter calculation and just playing a new deck. I will probably slim down the decks to more basic form before attempt teaching a new player.

    As for the Arena codes... if they were included in *everything*, I would buy so many packs! Love the game, love collecting cards, but have no one to play with in person so can't justify it. Don't buy anything on Arena because I don't like buying digital packs-- but if I could get digital copies of my *physical* packs? I'd be so damn broke.

      This, so much. Pokemon does this and it's great. Magic should copy the way Pokemon puts together product in general, honestly. It's like Hasbro can't see that their stinginess is actually getting in the way of sales.

    Long-time player with a wife who is still learning, but who I got into Arena and who LOVES LOTR stuff. This was an easy immediate preorder for me. We played it for the first time yesterday, and it must be said, Fires of Mount Doom is great if you're lucky. If you're not, and you happen to, I dunno, exile your Sauron when you're one mana shy of casting him that turn... yeaaaaah, that sure as hell opens the door for the other player.
    Also, early game drop Gandalf is a nightmare for the Mordor deck to deal with since you don't have exile available. Having him endlessly coming back makes creature trades suck and removal feel like a faulty solution.
    All that said, I don't regret the buy. More decks and cards for us both in meatspace and digital, a fun out-the-box game experience for two. If you can get it for 20 or less, especially if you have someone in your life you want to bring into the game or get deeper in with, it's very worth the price of admission.

    They maybe should also include a sample pack or a pack. I recall Portal had a pack of cards that could be added to the premade deck. I know that might raise the price though.

      Exactly. They're already charging almost double what the old intro decks cost, at least over here. Could they not have thrown a draft booster or two in there? Even a sample pack just to introduce deck building and variance would have been welcome here.

    And while the decks aren’t perfectly built they are a great introduction to the mechanics of this set for the price.

    I picked up the starter kits from the two previous years; the 2022 one was my first MtG product and introduced me to the game. That being said, the 2021 starter kit was in my opinion a more enjoyable experience to play with. In the end, however, I ended up playing commander, and have never walked back since, I find it far more enjoyable, and far easier to find people to play with. Whilst fun to toy around with and good for learning. I'd personally recommend going straight for a commander deck, and skipping the starter kits entirely.

    Honestly starter kits are some of my favorite products. I'm a more seasoned player, but I've been using a few starter decks to get my girlfriend into Magic. It's been really great because the lower complexity level has helped her learn a lot, and then when we start to get a bit bored with the decks, I can take them apart and add the cards to my collection.

    I'm actually pretty tempted by this! I've the remaining 1/3 of Lore of the Rings on the way already, plus a super-budget green/black phyrexian deck (the sleeves cost more than the deck itself and the incubator tokens cost more than 2/3 of the actual cards), so it's safe to say I'm heading out down the MTG rabbit hole.

    13:49 I bought one in the late 90s. It came with a little comic book that explained how to play. It was a very rigid experience where if you shuffled the deck, the instructions would be worthless because they had a very specific order that the turns should go in. The cards had a white border with a star for the expansion icon. It was an interesting way to learn, but I’m not even sure if both decks were 60 cards. I haven’t purchased any recent starter decks, but I imagine things have been streamlined.

    Thank you for this very detailed video. My son and I are brand new MTG players, but have played Pokemon and Digimon for years.
    We first picked up four jumpstart packs from my local card shop because we couldn't find any starter kits anywhere. We finally found the LOTR starter kit at Barnes and Noble for $20, plus it came with a free draft booster pack.
    I'm going to continue to look for other starter kits and definitely the Commander starter kits as well.
    We are still working on getting the basics down and Arena has been very helpful. The online codes were a huge selling point for me.
    I will watch more of your videos and really appreciate the detailed walkthroughs.

    Putting playsets into the decks reduces the variety of card types and adding consistency will make the decks more boring over many games. The more complex cards are playable but the nuance will become apparent over time. I think they got these decks just about right. Love the channel

    As a established player retruning to the world of Magic back in 2017. I have only bought myself booster boxes of sets that Catch my interests ever since. I got introduced to th e game from my computer science Professor by playing tons of Cube formats with his cube collection. Then I bought myself some commander decks to help grow my small collection with just like booster boxes on sets that catch my interest. I do think these starter sets for commander play is a great product for the value on welcoming new players. I also hope Wizards see it a s a positive and start to create similar type of decks to their other formats as well like Oath Breaker, and Brawl, and standard.

    I bought an old starter kit to be a starting point for my wife. I think the biggest downside from that product was that if the person wanted to get further into the hobby, basically every card in the kit was useless. This has a leg up that while it isn't a commander deck, there are a number of very useful cards in these that could either be put into a commander deck, or immediately expand on one of the commander precons for LotR.
    The second big piece is that getting two ready to play decks for the cost of movie tickets is hard to beat. A single commander precons, even discounted, can be in the $20-30 range. Having to then get another to have a pair to play against is a much bigger ask. Especially if you have a parent that wants to support their child's interest in the game, it's a comparatively costed option to a board game that can appeal to broader generations due to the setting.
    Glad to see the overall rating. While it has room for improvement, products like this are a definite win to getting brand new faces into the hobby.

    I got my start with a starter deck. 60 cards, standard legal, 4 copy limit, and while I get that commander is now the most popular format, with standard dying, these are the type of products that on ramp people. Having some sort of start option every set helps because any set could be a players first. And while the challenge decks are fine, I don't think they're the hook that something purpose built for a specific planes fiction is. You can have those with base sets that aren't plane tied, but I'd have loved to had a phyrexia, dominaria, or kamigawa themed starter to jump in with
