I know he's been injured and has to show this form over a longer period of time, but I wouldn't be surprised if McReight is top of this list this time next year. He'll get the chance to prove it in the lions series, but for me he's shown world XV level form since the rugby championship. Has absolutely everything you could want in that position.
Sam Underhill is the best open side England have, it’s a real shame he’s injured, hopefully he won’t be out to long because if he is fit he could feature for the Lions in the summer!!
On your point about the Irish Blindside, there's a good few that'd be in that tussle; Baird, Ahern, Izuchuckwu, McCann, Prendergast. Only McCann and Prendergast would be your old school Bilndside's out ot them, but that Gaping hole will be filled by Jack Conan, I believe in the 6 Nations.
Ryan Baird was putting his hand up last year for that 6 jersey but didn't finish the season well, played okay as an impact sub in the SA tour and has made a big difference in the Leinster lineout this season so hopefully he gets a start in the 6 Nations
Baird is a great player but unfortunately for us has just never reached the heights ( YET ) that pundits said he would. It seems the man gets injured tying his own laces
Cormac Izuchukwu and Tom Aherne are chasing down Baird too. He has everything to be an immense no. 6 but he needs consistent game time. He has a burst of speed most backs would kill for.
Glad to see that (as everybody who really knows the game) you recognize brilliance of F Cros. Such a good tackler, no faults, big rugby IQ, often the first support. He makes some many little things that make the game more fluid that no one can count them. These are noticed only when he's not on the pitch: "Why the rucks are so long today ? --- Oh, I 'get it : Cros doesn't play today". I feel I have to continue this Lions theme. Excellent list. Well researched. One minor thing, you and I have a thing in common. We have a problem with 6 and 9. You put McReight as the 6th but the video had 9 beside his picture! Lions, in situ, are VDF, Underhill and Darge with Morgan as first backup. Seems a big opertunity for a player to overtake Underhill but he has a lot of credit in the bank, like Sheehan. From an Irish perspective, nobody is going to break into this list because VDF is the main man and Doris goes into 7 when hes injured. Both are 80 minute players. Conan, Izuckukwu, Baird, C Prendergast, O'Mahony and Henderson are competing for the 6, 19 and 20 shirts. All are outside the top 10 of the 6 list.
JvDF back where he belongs. I wish he had been in this form at the WC, will have to wait for 2027. He is like a gladiator on the field and a real ‘gentle’ man off the field. 💚
With JVDF at openside and Doris at 8 we do need a rollicking no. 6...Ryan Baird to me is hopefully one for the future. But one Irish back row that I would have loved to have seen would be JVDF at 7, Doris at 8 and Ferris at 6. Ferris was a monster, an absolute beast and furiously quick too. That is a back row teams would shit themselves to face.

As a Bok supporter this is a position that I have question marks. There is no clear starting openside for SA besides Siya. Don´t think van Staden will make it to the next WC, so critical for SA to identify a successor or two for Siya. South Africa must have at least one player in the top 4 in each position in your rankings Tim.
I don’t think kolisi should be starting at the next World Cup, yes he’s a phenomenal captain and a great player. But he’ll be 37 in one of most physically demanding position. I think hanekom could be a future number 6 and needs to be given a chance Rassie needs to realise this. Hanekom yes plays 8 but he’s a leaner more slender tall 8 and is more of fetcher so could be suited to 6 maybe even more
VdF for sure, Kolisi as well but interestingly has been playing @8 for Sharks & @7 for SA like Earl playing @7 for Saracens but @8 for ENG. Like the look of Tom Pearson @7 for Northampton & Deon Fourie @7 for Stormers. JM Gonzalez is a 6, plays there for Sarries!

I'm usually fairly in agreement but not sure on this one. I have no idea how Cros is even close to top 3 and Kolisi hasn't done enough to climb again in my opinion. I believe Lamaro is one of the most underrated players in the world and Darge deserves a boost from 9th based on the last six months. One thing's certain though Van Der Flier deserves the top spot.
Pretty insane mcreight at six, was by far the best 7 in every game he played this year. He outperformed jvf and other top players. Wouldn’t mind you being a little less bias towards nh players and what they do at club level.

I feel like McReight is a bit low. With my wobs glasses on I think he's top 2, possibly nudging JVdF, a fairer ranking would be at least top 4 or 5 for me. McReight completed 2 more tackles than JVDF (58 vs 56) and had 3x as many turnovers (6 vs 2) despite playing one less game. Couldn't find any stats on ruck involvements so maybe JVDF pips him there? McReight might be behind JVDF at the moment but it's closer to a year than a million.

VDF was Irelands most important player last year and probably will be this year.
I’d say Doris is probably more important but VDF is certainly in the conversation

Underhill feels massively overvalued here. Would not take Underhill over Darge, Gonzalez, Kolisi, to name a few.
Never understood the hype for Kolisi. This guy was a ghost in the top 14. For SA, he transcends himself but for the rest of the time, he´s mediocre.
