- Living St. Louis Producer Jim Kirchherr examines the history of Annie Malone. In 1917, Annie Malone of Peoria Illinois built the Poro college building, headquarters for her flourishing African American hair and beauty empire. She is most famous for being community developer and supporter, her charity, the Annie Malone Children and family Center, offers relief for children and families in poverty or facing excruciating economical downfall.
What an inspiration! I heard of Annie Malone today for the first time from the owner of the beauty salon where I was having my hair done. I will help spread the Annie Malone story--another great but little known Black history story! This is a powerhouse story we can all be proud to tell. Thank you for sharing.
My paternal Grandfather was her chauffeur from St. Louis until she closed her doors. My Dad's family lived over her garage on Chicago's South Park, now King drive. Grandpa had to get a new job but stayed in touch, I remember the grown folks talking about her passing away. Col. John C. Robinson was her pilot, flying out of an airport in Robbin, IL. until it was destroyed in a tornado. A great lady!

Annie Turnbo as Malone was her married name and after she divorced him he basically claimed half of her business and it never was the same. I am a decent of hers I am her father Robert brother John great great grand child. I have no say so but in my lifetime I would like her to have her correct place in history as Annie Turnbo one of the 1st African American Millionaires and community developer. I would love to learn more and get involved to keep her legacy alive. It's funny as I am on a similar path.

This is my first time hearing of this inspirational woman. The Netfix series got her story completely wrong. I am really glad I saw THIS video.
Malone was not in the Netflix series
She was an honorary member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She opened up her Poro building in St. Louis for national meetings, which included hotel accommodations and meals in the opulent dining room. Dancing in the ballroom and meetings in the 500 seat auditorium. It was an amazing building. I still don't know why Madame C.J. Walker, who was one of her agents, is considered the first African-American millionaires. At one point, Annie Turbo Malone had a net worth of $14 million.
Annie Malone Drive was formerly Goode Avenue and Chuck Berry was born there (2520 Goode Avenue). The song "Johnny B. Goode" is named from the name of the street, Goode Avenue.
A lot of my siblings lived at Annie Malone at some point. We were all seperated. Our mom last name was Malone

She actually mentored and employed Sarah Breedlove a.k.a Madame C.J. Walker as a distributor of Poro products. Madame C.J. Walker copied her business concepts. If it hadn't been for Annie, Madame C.J. wouldn't have the blue print for business.
@@mishapatter9049 no one copied anyone. It was a recipe that was long known,that we wouldn't use on our scalps today(boric acid) and these two commercialized it and sold it.

Isn't that strange! Walker work for her! And she is less known than her! Amazing how our history is erase! I want to know is hiding about us as a people! We have many things but did not get recognize! If is just so frustrating! That people are willing to make sure we did not have a history!

@@rashawndaholmes2651 no one stole anything, this was a concoction that had been known in the community for generations. These 2 women commercialized and sold it for profit. And Annie Malone was not in the series.

I am assuming Annie had very little exposure because she probably did not want the fame. She just wanted to be a reserved business woman and give back to her community. Now I believe Sarah Breedlove became more popular because.....Madame. The name madame means prestige and respect. She not only learn the tools of the trade, she changed her name.
If you can find one, read one of Annie Turnbo Malone's speeches--she was a powerful mover and shaker! You don't warn $14 million by being shy and reserved. This woman was a powerhouse and respected as so. A five story building....75,000 agents on three continents. Madame Walker did not come close to touching that. Check it out.

Black not african American. That term wasn’t even heard of back then and a lot of us black people never agreed nor consented to the change in using that term. Smokie Robinson explained it very well why so many of us are not okay with that term.
