Thank you, I cannot define how grateful I am right now. Organizational Theory, Organizational Behaviour, Strategic Management, Leadership... Contingency after contingency, but that one I was completely lost.
Thanks Evren, I am glad I could bring value to your time. Btw I had similar issues when I was studying for my MBA read countless books but no one was explaining the concept in a fundamental manner :).
Melissa Stanton thank you! Working at a pizza store during my university days taught me alot. Reminencing all those memories for my MBA studies helped me immensely.
I'm sorry that I'm a bit confused here.. based on the pizza example, your leader-member relation is poor, task structure is good and position power is strong. so why did you say it's most effective to choose the octant 8th? why not pick the octant 5th instead which fits perfectly with the 3 situations given?
Excellent video! I am currently in Year 2 and this helps me a bit more. There is just one section I would appreciate more clarification on which is Step 3: Determining the most effective leadership style. I am just having a hard time grasping this step.
Thanks so much Reta. Imagine yourself as the owner of Tesla, where you have variety of people working under you. You need different leadership style for say Engineers, Technicians, Accounting and Maintennance. Then you have different types of personality of people where again various factors play in and you need to choose appropriate leadership Style. Let me know if you need further clarification
@@CanIndianChannel Thanks so much for writing back to me so soon. I get your simplified explanation and how it applies to the step. Thanks once again 🙏🏽
Thanks for the summary though i would love to know how many people can be in a small group/team that the theory can be apply effectively but great video cheers
Thanks for the kind words Fire Pheonix. Based on the theory from what I understand it only gives a leader perspective to adjust his/hers leadership style on small group size. If the group size is increased the scale (intial LPC) would get convoluted or may introduce bias. Hope this helps.
well I'm currently doing a report for my psychology of work subject, and is based on my personal experience with my own job and you did help me by giving me information on the "small group size" just now and also by making this video so thanks ^^

You said you can dole out punishment or reward as a manager so you had a high position of power. You also said the tasks were well structured like recipe etc.. and you had poor member relations due to your age. So, you would be an octant of 5 not 8.
intnasg probably not. This is for theory is for the owner/manager to adjust his/her leadership style to maximize th effectiveness. This video is about one of the very many contingency theories of leadership. Hope this helps!
@@CanIndianChannel This has been very educational! However, im still stuck on what Jason mentioned. Why would you choose an octant of 8 rather than a 5?
What about the video about Ray kroc and Sam Walter that you said you would Inc it in the description? I'm excited to watch that video😊 hope to hear from you 😊😊☺️
Hi, let's say for example you work for a non profit pet shelter organization where you work many volunteer who do not get paid for working there. You are in charge to lead a group of people where they work solely to help and not interested in monetary compensation. In this instance it's very important that you as leader motivate the staff to somehow make people who report to you enjoy thier experience or else they will leave without any repercussions. So in this instance it's very important for leader member relationship being effective. Hope this helps.
although it is well researched & helpful, is there an error here? Referring to the pizza store eg, the octant selected is 8 while shouldnt it have been 5?
Sudipto Roy, yes you are correct. Although one of the implication of this theory is that it is very perception based so it becomes a challenge to comprehend who is correct in this instance.
Ok w8 I'm lost, octant 8 is low LPC but in video you said high LPC. If i understand this correctly you should be task-motivated leader (low LPC), because the job is well defined. I mean, you get order, you slap on a toppings, put it in the oven and vollah... Its well defined task so you should be task orientated. low LPC right? OR according to the chart the relationship is Poor, task structure is structured, and leader power is strong so high LPC would be best?
Hello @ItsEthan, apology for the late response was celebrating my birthday. I think you hit the nail on the head, you are absolutely correct, the important thing is that Fiedlers contingency theory is very user perception based. In mind opinion the tasks were not defined but yes after you stated your information I would much rather stick to your explanation. Thank you for putting this across.
Uriel this highly depends on the LPC attribute scale (the questions on LPC score; video time 3:22). As a Leader when I filled the charts, I assumed my position power as weak. But you were you extremely apt in understanding the best case scenario. To add on, one of the drawbacks of this theory is that you may analyse or rate yourself differently than someone else in the same position - it is very user perception centered.
Yeah, i was confused with that too. Meaning, his lpc falls on an octant 8. But based on the favorableness of the situation it falls at octant 5. But the LPC which is subjective will prevail haha. Ok noted on that.
Better but still gives me a headache. Far too complex to be useful in an ever-evolving environment. Also, you stated at point (05:14) that the pizza place had a structured environment?? Why Octant 8? Makes absolutely no sense. According to your description it should have been octant 6
You are correct about the octant8, see the reviews below a lot of people have pointed it out. Yes it gave me a headache to and I have been working 20 yrs in corporate management and could never apply most of these theories :)
@@CanIndianChannel Thank you ad my apologies I did not mean to come to cross aggressively - the consequence of digital communications. It is an excellent video and I am using this video in a leadership training course. I also developed worksheets that make it a bit easier to understand.
