This is my life every time it rains. The git who sold us the car lied about so much stuff wrong with the car. He taped up the sunroof and took the fuse out so we couldnt discover the leak, my husband took the tape off to see the damage... Going to attempt a repair job. Thanks for the vid
yeah unfortunately previous owners do lots of repairs that won't last, best off fixing it properly even if it does take time just remember to make sure everything is really clean when putting it back together thanks.
1) You installed the glass seal in bad orientation. In this way pressure water can go inside easily, it just slide over the chamfered part of seal. The wobbly seal corner at 32:08 surely create weak point! The right orientation is with two seal "lines" to outer plastic, so fillet part of seal towards to center. 2) For sealing the outer plastic to car body I recommend butyl sealing tape. I used this tape also for seal the four window nuts. 3) I also recommending proper check of all bushings inside rails. Every part should be in tight tolerance -> no rattle. 4) Near some screws of the bottom part should be inside four soft cushions.

Has anybody worked out why the plastic tube/spigots actually break. I was wondering if it was successive build up frost which then blocks the tube and allows plug of ice form in that area and subsequent expansion breaks the tube. This problem with my Discovery 2s seems to occur in the winter when it has been standing for while at that time of year and not used. Not sure of a solution other than store it under cover ( garage etc) to prevent water getting into the channel under those conditions and building up ice in a slight thaw and refreeze cycle. I’m only guessing but this area shouldn’t be under any stress you’d think otherwise… unless there is some force somehow applied to the area when the sun roof is opened. Interesting mystery hope someone has definitively worked out the reason for this really tedious problem. Great video, you’re hero’s for taking the time to illustrate the excellent repair…thank you!
I think it's the constant heating/cooling in that area via the roof and the plastic goes brittle, same thing happens in the engine bay with plastic parts sometimes I had a window washer hose connecter just snap but it was old so replaced it.
You could well be right there you can imagine how hot it must get there between the roof skin and the insulatiive roof lining ….Seems a poor design in the first place for such crucial part especially considering the amount of work necessary to put it right. I’m going to try and fashion the part out of brass using your suggested replacement part for the mould🤞…..Thanks again for great and helpful videos.
Great video guys! I'm having trouble with my disco 2 sun roof also. Did the top rubber seal fit the sunroof okay? I've seen some on forums that the seal pushes the back of the sun roof up and doesn't close properly.
if the glass doesn't close properly then the seal isn't pushed home enough basically, make sure it's pressed into the corners and try again we had the same issue ourselves.
I've just bought a td5 sunroof to fit in my t4 transporter. Before fitting it I decided to give it a overhaul to make sure it don't leak. When I checked underneath the sunroof I could push one of the corners of the glass up with my finger so it wasn't sealing to the glass. I noticed that on both sides of the mech underneath are these hooks that pull the glass down to the rubber that weren't closing properly. I sussed out that if you install the winding handle at a angle.not lined up with the screw holes and watch the hooks on the mech and slowing turn the body of the handle it adjusts the hooks making the glass squish closer to the glass. Hope this makes sense. 🙂
@@davidhenderson9197 Sounds right, thanks for sharing. The glass has a little flex on the seal but the hooks pull it down to seal, then any water should drop down into the tray and then through the pipes either side.
@DanielJohnHowTo no problem. There's this stuff called gummi pflege that you can put on the seals. It's a rubber seal rejuvenate. Worked great on stopping the roof leaking on the wife's coupe cabriolet. 🙂
I'd replace them, they get brittle. But sealing up may work, just not sure how long it would last that's all. We have had zero leaks since doing the work in the video, if that helps.
Darn it... I'm having trouble getting the the interior apart, like the a- pillar wrap n lining. Y'all just skip these steps & voila you're done...it's getting frustrating!
Followed your advice and replaced the plastic drains and recovered the headliner, no leaks and feels like a new car. Thanks for your trouble guys

@@Odonta7 exactly, you can get a metal replacement version as well but it's pricey.

How did you remove the interior trim around the sunroof? Does it just pull off?
the top plastic trim on the roof?

The plastic pieces in the corners on my sunroof are still intact. Would going over the joints with sticafex stop the leaks?

you want to use a non-setting rtv sealant, so it doesn't crack later down the line and provides a good water seal
