After coming to Japan a few times, I can confidently say these takes are horrible. Found myself watching less and less of them after coming to Japan. For first timers, don't let this tier list sway you from going somewhere you really want like Sensoji, Nara Park, Shibuya Crossing. Just go to these "overrated" places during weekdays and the underrated places during weekends and you'll encounter way less people which makes these places ten times better than this list makes it out to be

100% agree. I feel like they always come from their perspective of being there for years and seeing so many places that they disregard some of the things people want to see on their first trip. As if they didn't do all of the touristy things the first time they went (other than joey, of course). It does come across a bit pretentious at times, and I get it they want people to do other things, but just let people do the stuff they've always wanted to do or see the first time.

Agreed. I lived in Japan for several years and still make annual visits there (sometimes twice a year...) and I think they had some overly harsh takes that were way too negative. I was in Nara Park earlier this year, right during school trip season when it was rammer with Japanese students, and I absolutely loved it. Ueno Park was also incredible and not in the least bit overcrowded. Miyajima - crowded yes, but to say it's shit...way too far, it's actually one of my favorites.
I feel like they overrated the crowds. Saying 'most of Japan is awful on the weekend' is so completely incorrect. Yes, Sensoji in the daytime is awful, and Dotombori is a miserable experience (I remember when it was mainly Japanese in the 2010s - now it's wholly foreigners). But plenty of the locations on that list have breathing space on the weekend.

As a person living in Hawaii and has visited Tokyo once a year I agree with the comments that these takes are terrible for a tier list for “Travel Spots”
I love going to Tokyo, there’s events and other stuff to do in these overcrowded areas. My fiance loves Disney Japan that has recently renovated and there’s a difference from Disneyland Anaheim.
Went to Asakusa and did the tik tok special of Senso-ji temple and ate at Unana, Kagetsudo, and Imo pippi. Was it amazing? No, but it was still fun to try for the first time.
In Hawaii, Waikiki is overcrowded, Ala Moana is overcrowded, North Shore is overcrowded. Ya’ll should still go. It’s what you see in the ads on YT and other social media platforms. Gotta try it at least once whether it was underwhelming or fun.
TLDR: Japan good. Tourist traps are still good

I feel like the perception of trash takes are warped since they live in Japan
As a tourist who was in Japan for the first time for 50 days this was my personal takeaway:
Dotonbori: Dope area, a little crowded at times, but a pretty large area with a lot to do and a killer night life. One of my favorites
Akihabara: Really liked it as well. Was probably better back in the day. But Yodaboshi camera and all the game stores and arcades are fun to chill around
Universal Studios: Expensive and overrated AF. Felt cheap for the price.
Kabukicho: Neat area, even if it is a little seedy. The western part is tourist friendly, but the eastern part is questionable. I dug this area since I played Yakuza 0 which takes place here.
Nara: Not overrated IMO. Nice area with a lot of parks, temples, hiking, the deer. Fun area to explore.
Ropponogi Hills: Seems like an area for wealthy locals. Not tourists. Didn't like it at all.
Ueno Park: I like this park. I prefer it over the park next to Harajuku. Nice mix of museums, temples and scenery. Also not overrated AF IMO.
Senso-ji: Very tourist trappy, but still a nice temple in the heart of Tokyo.
Shibuya Crossing: The time square of Japan, the entire Shibuya area is very eclectic and fun to explore. If you like shopping especially. I think you have to evaluate it by the entire area, not just the crosswalk.

I really want to go back to Fushimi Inari when it's not the middle of the day! It was crowded as heck when I visited, but it actually seemed like it could be a really cool place to walk through if you could catch it when there was less tourists. I caught Kiyo-mizudera early in the morning, when there was maybe a dozen other people there, and it was gorgeous - honestly, of all the temples in Kyoto, the only one I didn't like much was Kinkakuji. It was the most overcrowded, and also the most "I guess that's it, huh?" Nara was also really nice, even if it was a bit crowded. The deer were whatever, but the two temples off Nara park were both very worthwhile.

Fushimi Inari (the thousand tori gates thing) is a very nice route, I really liked it. I enjoy hiking so I may be biased. But I recommend to go first hour in the morning on a weekday to enjoy the route without crowds. I think the magic is about feeling relatively isolated. When I was leaving the area it was getting full of tourists walking up and the vibe was not there. The park in Shinjuku is nice but I personally prefer Rikugien in Tokyo.

Being from NZ, we have have almost no proper theme parks. So while overcrowded, Tokyo Disneyland was such an amazing place to check out, not just for the rides, but the park itself has such a fun and cool vibe to it. Its worth checking out if places like Disneyland are hard to come by in your country.

These guys have become jaded and have perspectives of a person who's lived here for too long. They also became too popular and YT famous known enough where they don't even like yall unless it's some sort of event they must go to....i understand their takes as I too live in shibuya and been living here since 2015 I've seen it all. That's why I like hanging out with tourists because I get to take in your rose colored glasses energy when we hang. I get to remember all the things I did when I was yall. Same with the kart racing. People don't really hate kart racing they hate seeing yall having time to do this and have fun. I hate seeing tourists in my way when I'm B-lining across the shibuya crossing and tourists got their phone out standing in my way.... (but I like hangin wit ya) the tourist spots is what helped a lot of people want to japan before tik tok and shorts and even them (theyre still somewhat new to living) they aren't like the super OG TH-camrs from 2011 2013 ect era.
Also don't get me wrong I ain't painting them all the same but they hold some characteristics are that of the stereotypical British (area) personality doom and gloom.
Americans can be some hatin azz ninjas but British and Australian...... Yeah yall got us beat

If you have the opportunity and privilege to visit Japan more than once, I could see some of these locations not having the same impact as others and becoming more “meh” as a recommendation.

I actually loved my experience at the great inari shrine in Kyoto with the 1000 gates not only was it a free experience but it was way more fun compared to all the other Kyoto shrines that make you pay to get in I think the challenge of walking up the stairs to reach the top of the mountain is a great workout and just a fun time with amazing views you can also go with a friend and race each other to the top! If you go on a weekday it's absolutely great! One of my favorite places I went to

It feels like because they have been living in Japan for years now, they are jaded towards the more known attraction spots, and leaned towards more of the less known ones. I personally enjoyed Ueno park because they had a Ninja themed event running during my time visiting, and the art museums nearby are great if for people who enjoys arts as well. The only downside is the field trip student groups; there will always be field trip students there.

With how much information you can find on the internet these days, you can already get a pretty good idea on any tourist attraction before hand. You can decide for yourself what you wanna see and what you don't wanna see. Places don't get overcrowded for no good reason. On the other hand, most of the so-called "hidden gems" are rarely "gems" as well since it's unlikely that any location worthy of travelling across the sea to see still manages to stay undiscovered.

So since Dotonbori became so popular Now Osaka local people go to “Umeda”which still not popular for tourist it’s lots of department stores and great restaurants and bars

Go to Ikuno Korea town in Tsuruhashi for daytime Osaka, a lot of Koreans (Zainichi) actually live there and own stores and restaurants. Pretty much authentic Korean food for the most part. I feel like not many people even know it exists albeit being one of the biggest in all of Japan. From my experience it was not that popular with tourists except Koreans themselves and some other Asians (at least back in 2017-2018).

A lot of people travel to Japan with the wrong expectations, or rather, they travel under the mindset of delusion instead of reality. It's a country like any other that has people who live, work, sleep, go to school, etc. on a daily basis. It's not a playground country or some fantasy island like how most people believe it to be. I think these guys are rating the tourist spots appropriately based on looking at the country AS A COUNTRY and not just some anime land or theme park island in Asia.

Universal was miserable for me. I went on a Tuesday this September and despite arriving there when the park opened it filled up almost immediately. The rides had a 30-minute wait time from the get-go and by the time we were done with the first one almost all shot up to 90+ minutes. It was also incredibly hot that day and while that is not the parks fault, the lack of shade and places to cool down absolutely was. In some lines we were stuck in the sun for a while, with no easy option to leave or any water (we went through so many bottles of water that day). Every lick of shade was filled with people. I also want to give a special negative shoutout to Nintendo world. As a Nintendo fan it boggles my mind how they designed such a boring ride (that we waited in line for almost TWO HOURS). And the area in general, while good looking was even more full than the rest of the park. Honestly, if I could have paid 20, 30€ just for the Harry Potter ride (the one under the castle) I would just do that as nothing else was even remotely worth the suffering we endured that day.
