      You're a good human - but also the reality is the land tax policy probably isn't coming in. So there is no real danger there. They would have a really positive impact on our Parliament though....

    • @HighBoss
      @HighBoss ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@liam4830 It wouldn't come in the first term that's for sure. A party willing to work with both sides certainly shifts the calculus for this kind of policy though, despite how radioactive it seems to both major parties. Unlike with grn/act, both the majors do have some incentive to not just rule out everything TOP proposes if they manage to establish themselves in parliament.

      @@mr2981 I took it extremely seriously. I think the policy with the most flaws in it was probably the climate residency policy. I'm not convinced it will get the uptake Raf claims it will. As for the housing policy, tax strategy and Teal Card, they all seem highly required under a system which currently doesn't make much long-term strategic planning beyond a three year cycle.

    We're swing voters and will probably party vote TOP, and family living in Ilam are all 100% voting for Raf. Loving most of TOP policy but not the golden "climate" visa discussed here, we don't need oligarchs buying residency - please reconsider! Agree that house prices are a big issue. Not sure that Land Value tax is the answer. But they also have a policy to address speculation which is key for me. Another thing that is really important is Climate Change - a hard cap is great, so support them on that. But would like them to have a policy on energy security. This is NZs achilles heal. We must have policy that recognises that there will be a worldwide energy shortage and that carbon based sources ( as we all try and transition) will be important for some time.

    • @hemiphillips786

      Land value tax is a tough sell, but it would be very very good for encouraging the most productive use of land.
      There are some very big parcels of land in central Wellington that are just being land banked, because it costs the owner relatively little. If you aren’t going to do something, sell it to someone who will. A land tax will force them to either 💩 or get off the pot.

      Should be higher and with a high-ish threshold . Labour's was probably about right. Option of deferrment (with interest) until future sale is a good idea for the elderly, although a lot of old folks have big incomes from well-stuffed managed wealth funds . A lot would defer anyway in the hope that a future right-wing govt would abolish it.

    I'd like to believe in TOP, because they attract educated, open-minded people, but it's ridiculous to posture as a 'government in waiting' with tax-and-spend tinkering policies when they don't yet make 5%. They should concentrate on building a power-base by addressing underlying structural issues, like advocating for measures to address the 'Democracy Deficit' inherent in the 'Westminster System' and for an economy based on Modern Monetary principles. No other party can do this because they are shackled to vested interests, eg Labour to the administrative and academic sector, National to the finance sector, Maori to the Iwi Incorporations etc. I somehow doubt that Raf can be a part of any radical departure, since he is a banker's economist and thus shackled to a system of debt-created money that is the life-blood of banking and the blood-sucker of society.

    Raj fails to mention here that the new investor plus program is a new policy and has already been proven to be an abysmal failure. There are hundreds of applications for companies and programs to be on the list of approved investments and only a handful of investors that have applied for the visa.

      @michaeljohnson2438 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jwatstom I don't recall Raf saying anywhere in his interview that he was going to get out a bulldozer and destroy houses. I do however recall him discussing tax and community housing reform which would promote supply of both private and state housing. Yes, it's true that immigration brings more people into the country, however, we have much more an issue around where people settle rather than actual supply issues. The largest driver of house price increases has always been the purchasing of non-first homes over the past two decades. As a nation we've made a decision to prioritise these individuals over first-home buyers. Whether or not you agree with that is entirely up to you. Housing development and supply is there, the issue that we have is that we generally have an ageing housing stock with available housing in the areas currently lacking in demand.
      With a lack of systemic change from governments over the past decade, I'd say TOP's housing policy is likely to have a more positive impact than the status quo. As for me personally, I've worked alongside Kainga Ora and have also volunteered as part of the refugee resettlement programme over the past 15 years. I'm not perfect, but I do have a background in the sector.
