About time, we need to build up our Defense Force, stop the payouts to certain parties internally and get the benefit payments under control, divert the money to the Air Force/Army and Navy. If the Chinese invade us in the next 20yrs, and we can't Defend our country, what then
I do agree but I'd take a looong time before china could hope of invading nz let alone holding it and by then we'd ha alot more to worry about. Like where did australia and usa go lol.
Our Navy has a Labour shortage, we have a ratio of 40% officers and 60% ranks (officers working in offices and ranks working.) Due to Austerity measures the Navy now has a budjet deficit of $150 Million Dollars. what do the high ranking offers do? - they with their 6 figure incomes, cut pay to the ranks, fire contractors, and reduce future rank intake capacity. all while Australia is increasing their military budget and offering double the pay for our rank sailours It's not the fact we can't afford to run the millitairy and Healthcare properly. Its the fact we have too many middle managers (i.e. we have 141 commanders with 9 ships to command (8 now that HMNZS manawanui's hit a reef ) and those managers make life a living hell for the people actually doing the work in order to keep their 6 figures and stable paper shuffling jobs. weather is navy chefs or nurses who suffer and leg it to Australia. i don't think its a case of one Or the other, but rather a multitude of problems with our entire culture. (i.e. we pay middle managers way to much, and undervalue working class jobs.)
It is showing how 38 years addiction to neoliberal economics and governance is making New Zealand a mediocre middle income OECD country that is stuck 20th century economics and governance.

What is stopping nz from diversifying its economy away from Chinese dependence? Such as trade with India and Indonesia? Is NZ dependence on China in NZ national interest?

Yeah, this reporter better not own a car.......or a house, or anything else that uses coal, gas or oil, clean energy is happening, we all know it's important. But it don't happen overnight.
Our Navy needs a major shake up & investment. Yes, we're a small nation but look at our economic exclusion zone, its massive just over 4 million square miles or 15 x the size of NZ. We need sailors and need to pay them a decent income, once we do that then we can man our existing ships, then we need more modern ships South Korean made ships would be suitable, our Seasprites need to be replaced with American made seahawks to have them compatible with Australian/US Navy systems.
I think that's why the nzdf are looking into getting unmanned ships/ ones with a smaller crew. The idea was to possibly limit it to just a boarding crew which would cut huge amount of costs. Also isn't that partially the purpose of the P-8A?
How do call out Trump when your former PM JA was bonkers? NZ defence got difficult decisions to future purchases considering their budget is nowhere like Australia. I believe NZ will need piggyback on Australia to save money but also be compatible like their future corvettes could come South Korea but still have money for Seahawks. Although NZ will have fine money for lost support ship, maybe RAN future JSS for NZ?
How many people here are willing to lose a portion of their pension down the line if this goes through? Just ask the UK pensioners how they feel about losing their winter fuel payment,...while their governmnt is giving Ukraine billions.
Australia and new Zealand should have a joint military fortification, Australia and Nz should strengthen their armed forces by buying more advanced weapon systems specially submarines and hypersonic long range missiles and increase their squadrons of airforce
Interesting comments also about Australia defending its Sea Lines of Communication... Subtle dig at NZ needing to up its game, especially when looking to buy replacement General Purpose Frigates in the upcoming joint purchase agreement eg NZs intentions within the upcoming Defence Capability Plan. At the end of September, the New Zealand navy joined with the Australian and Japanese armed forces to sail through the Taiwan Strait. It was the first time in seven years that the New Zealand navy had patrolled that area, and its visit was of great political significance. Xiaoming Huang, a Victoria University professor of international relations, agreed that marine security was a major issue for New Zealand - and one where this country could show its commitment to the region. "This is a very volatile international environment," Huang said. For New Zealand, but also every trading nation, he said security of the sea would be of "extreme importance". "The loss of Manawanui has reduced the RNZN fleet to eight ships and added to fleet availability issues. The RNZN have laid up three ships, offshore patrol vessels HMNZS Otago (P148) and HMNZS Wellington (P55), and inshore patrol vessels HMNZS Hawea (P3571), due to a lack of personnel to crew the ships. Frigate HMNZS Te Mana (F111) is in the midst of an extended maintenance period which includes upgrades to its communication systems, leaving now only four ships on operational status - frigate HMNZS Te Kaha (F77), multi-role vessel HMNZS Canterbury (L421), fleet oiler HMNZS Aotearoa (A11) and inshore patrol vessel HMNZS Taupo (P3570)." (From USNI). Judith Collins is refreshingly honest about the current state of our Navy in particular (compared to 35-years ago), and the need to finance new frigates among other items in the upcoming Defence Capability Plan. Proof will be in the level of ACTUAL capital spend on Defence, whether it will satisfy the Aussis to lower the cost per General Purpose Frigate (3 or 4 required in NZ), and whether it will satisfy the likes of Donald trump (if he heaven forbids gets in) and his demand for countries to stop freeloading on the US for Defence coverage in the Indo-Pacific & elsewhere... ie. Will NZ raise its defence spending from a pathetic 1.1% of GDP to something like 1.6% of GDP in short order given the geopolitical backdrop in the Northwest Pacific?
We certainly need to update and increase spending , on our military capability, instead of putting our armed personal at risk, as seen in Afhanistan, from out dated equipment. To under estimate our roll in International affairs, can only be improved, especially in the Pacific, enhances the safety of our military personal, while delivering an efficient and professional manner. So there shouldn't be a chance in hell to beef up our military. NZ spends 1.3 % of GDP on the military and that was going to be affected by government austerity measures as will. So, where's the funding coming from?
I think it comes down to a long-term monetary commitment. If we lock in 2% of GDP as a minimum that all governments are consistent with for decades. We could have the Defence force we need. And if the economy shrinks, the defence budget shrinks as well. Consistency is the key with anything in life.

US has 800 plus military bases around the world while the rest of the world has next to none. For me the best quote answering whether we are on the wrong side, comes from the cartoon Phineas and Ferb star wars episode - "Didn't we just blow up a planet?. That is sort of difficult to justify, morally".
So US bases around the planet are going to blow it up?
@@michaelhagley4762 I think about how the US are the allies with South Korea and China is with North Korea. Choose your friends wisely. And if, and only if by chance China moved on their voiced plans to impose themselves on our ocean (and who knows what else) then we will be begging for western help as we cannot defend ourselves. China is moving, see why Australia increased this years military budget by $50 billion, so has Japan, Indonesia and naturally Taiwan. Only NZ is asleep.
@@berniemckinley4988 Thanks for your reply. I view the world from both sides, watching what happens in the UN, reading both Chinese and Russian news agencies as well as western news agencies. The reason I'm pointing this out to you is because your reply seems to me to be only the view of western news agencies, in another words, US propaganda.
About time, we need to build up our Defense Force, stop the payouts to certain parties internally and get the benefit payments under control, divert the money to the Air Force/Army and Navy. If the Chinese invade us in the next 20yrs, and we can't Defend our country, what then
lol yea the chinese and the Russians will inavde us for our sheep and people like you.
I do agree but I'd take a looong time before china could hope of invading nz let alone holding it and by then we'd ha alot more to worry about. Like where did australia and usa go lol.
We cant afford to run our healthcare properly. Waste of money
Soon the US military industrial complex will start demanding us to buy arms from them, just like what they are doing in Europe with NATO.
Our Navy has a Labour shortage, we have a ratio of 40% officers and 60% ranks (officers working in offices and ranks working.) Due to Austerity measures the Navy now has a budjet deficit of $150 Million Dollars.
what do the high ranking offers do? - they with their 6 figure incomes, cut pay to the ranks, fire contractors, and reduce future rank intake capacity. all while Australia is increasing their military budget and offering double the pay for our rank sailours
It's not the fact we can't afford to run the millitairy and Healthcare properly. Its the fact we have too many middle managers (i.e. we have 141 commanders with 9 ships to command (8 now that HMNZS manawanui's hit a reef )
and those managers make life a living hell for the people actually doing the work in order to keep their 6 figures and stable paper shuffling jobs.
weather is navy chefs or nurses who suffer and leg it to Australia. i don't think its a case of one Or the other, but rather a multitude of problems with our entire culture. (i.e. we pay middle managers way to much, and undervalue working class jobs.)
It is showing how 38 years addiction to neoliberal economics and governance is making New Zealand a mediocre middle income OECD country that is stuck 20th century economics and governance.

He can't openly say that it's to deter/possibly fight China while trading heavily with China. Anyone with a basic level awareness of current affairs knows this, and that's why the journo didn't need to press beyond a probing question.
New Zealand have a new submarine thanks to diversity hiring.
What is stopping nz from diversifying its economy away from Chinese dependence? Such as trade with India and Indonesia? Is NZ dependence on China in NZ national interest?
You know "China" (BRICS) Is going to "win" over the next decade?

Jack why when you mention China you never mention how China treats its neighbours!
Take a look at how USA treats..... Everyone (neighbours or not)
Our Navy needs a major shake up & investment.
Do you really feel that threatened?
Australia really could benefit from the very capable NZ navy😂
How many people here are willing to lose a portion of their pension down the line if this goes through? Just ask the UK pensioners how they feel about losing their winter fuel payment,...while their governmnt is giving Ukraine billions.

Your world is coming to an end
Hi Jack, hi Richard
Australia and new Zealand should have a joint military fortification, Australia and Nz should strengthen their armed forces by buying more advanced weapon systems specially submarines and hypersonic long range missiles and increase their squadrons of airforce
Totally agree we are in a recession negative gdp so do we get a refund
That was "Beef", not "Reef".
New Zealand are highly regarded in the world, in providing military support, and are sourced by the major allies such as the USA/
USA is failing.
so will Australia start building Nuclear Power stations?
The Australian coalition government wants to build nuclear powered stations. But nuclear powered submarines reactor will come from the UK
I honestly don't see any person from NZ or other western nations fighting along side Australia if the pass their misinformation bill.

Like the COVID response team mandatory and unnecessary 🤔
According to Luxon NZ is broke. The government is cutting expenditure to most government departments/services, even school lunches are affected.
@@Kelvinpaul4 We can by start manufacturing our own weapon systems with private sector and government funding. Create an industry around defense with sales offsetting the cost, it's the way of the future. The resupply logistics don't make sense ,we need to have an industry base at home. Rather than buy obsolete second hand shit, let's make state of the art mass produced equipment here that suits our geographic location. Missiles, drones and the like.
@@badjelly1027I agree with manufacturing weapons and munitions for our use and for sale to other nations as many developed countries do. However NZ governments think manufacturing and selling military goods is contrary to NZ character and have even stopped Kiwi Saver investing in companies who manufacture weapons or components that could be used in the manufacturing of weapons and munitions. NZ companies are prohibited from being involved in the manufacturing and or selling military weapons and munitions on international markets. Which is stupid.
@@Kelvinpaul4 That's correct, I guess we will have to import this equipment at exorbitant cost. I just hope we change our mindset as to what military hardware will actually be effective and what our defense strategy is . We do however have more pressing problems at home that need attention.
@@badjelly1027 I think for the navy innovating and researching remote controll patroll vessels and alike would be a great thing for nz todo as other countries would have a interest in it and we could get in early and become a innovator in it. But we should manufacture things that we can also sell to other countries to keep people employed here and as you said off set the costs I also believe more ships with the same capabilities as the Canterbury could be a great soft power. To keep the south island nations in our/ allies/usa/aus sphere of influence which would help prevent a Chinese millitary base. Just imagine if we had a few ships that could supply and help in relief/ construction efforts for a entire island I'd help our own country and our neighbors it wouldn't be able to destroy a destroyer but I'd make it harder for China to have a foot hold.
