CAPI is CLEAN. Absolutely no comparison wow.

That CAPI at 100% gain is excellent on his vocals. I feel like the WA12 was more true to what the acoustic guitar actually sounds like. Whether you want that or not is your choice, but I felt more like I was in the room with the WA12 for good and bad.

Great review. I probably favor the CAPI on everything. Has a sound that won't fatigue your ears.

The warm is exactly what it says it is - warm. The CAPI is a little brighter, but also comes across a little thinner to me. In my experience it's better to have a warmer recording and then brighten it up in the mix. If you start out with something thinner / brighter it's more difficult to add body to it afterwards. They both sound awesome though. I would use both if I had them but maybe use different mics and use a warmer mic like a Blue Baby Bottle with the CAPI, but the same mic on the WA12 might be too warm.

The JLPF stands for Jaco Pastorius. It's a low pass filter that rolls off top end to put you in the ball park of that Jaco bass tone.

For most of the video I thought the WA12 was just the littlest bit below in presence and saturation until the DI shootout where at the end you engaged the post 2622 and it was all over. So if you want a combo mic pre/DI and you’re going to track bass through a DI then CAPI is the clear winner. That being said, if you just need a vocal/instrument mic, the WA12 is a wonderful pre for about $100 less than the CAPI.

Thank you for the test! However we can't make an accurate decision with the way it was conducted. The performances are different between each time you switch the preamp. He may be hitting the preamp harder in some parts than others. I suggest going forward that you record the same performance through both and replay the same segment for each preamp.

The VP312dded weight and something nice to the signal. Nice top end also. Wa12 is surprisingly not as "warm" or alive sounding as the VP. The upper(est) midrange is kind of pokey in the wa12. I could see the added chunk in the VP312 skewing the perception of a true acoustic tone for some. But the added gooeyness could make for interesting sounds. I rather like it on bass as well. Definitely a no brainer for me personally. The right answer is to get them both!

that statement is not correct. adjusting the gain correctly sounds great and it is also very easy to go over with this preamp. For guitars and synths are a beast. For the price a very good deal. My experience. Cheers!

Thank for this comparison. I think loudness of these clips are not matched accurate. To my ears, CAPI sounds more warm/smooth than WA12.But WA12 sounds more dynamic on Acoustic guitar.

Normally I listen on good speakers but just through my phone's tiny midrange- I'm hearing more brightness from the Warm. I want to say I like the Capi more because (API c'mon) but I'd be lying. However I'd still go with the Capi on kick and bass just because I know it'll have the API punch I've been addicted to ever since hearing Morrison Hotel

The Capi distorted on some of the peaks. It had an emphasized response in the upper midrange which usually suits acoustic instruments. But here, the Capi had the tendency to sound cold and tinny. The Warm was balanced and clearer.

Nice shootout. Capi for voice. Warm for everything else. The Capi has an extended top end response that sounds nice on voice. The Warm sounded more saturated but in a good way. The DI is where the Warm really stood out. As a “decent” budget preamp, both are very respectable. A 312 or 512c is over twice the price. With aftermarket mods available, a budget preamp can really compete with high end brands. Right out of the box, the WA12 gets you about 80-90% there. Moded, while still not an exact replica, makes it a worthy contender in its own right. For the most part these are fine preamps. The differences become more obvious if you add a ton of compression. That’s when any dirt in the signal path really stands out.

That's an unfair comparison as all Warm gear sounds thin, pinched and broken. Even a mackie pre would sound better than those Warm Audio.
