      Dana "60" Glass. In '69, AMC also produced the S/CRambler. The "Killer from Kenosha" had a magazine ad saying it would run 14.3 seconds in the quarter mile, which it did straight from the show room.

    Very special car. I know some look down on AMC but that company did so much with so little in money. I love Hornets and this is indeed a very special one! Thanks for sharing, Lou, and once again you bring variety like no other automotive channel! As a sidebar, I love your courtesy that you show to the owners when you ask permission to open the car door. That is one classy move - few would even think to do that!

    What a great car and custodian! If Mr. Martin wants to visit us here in Texas these days, we would be happy to see him, and he would be happy to have that air conditioning that he found for a bargain, pumping away mile after mile. Thanks, Lou!

    Can't get enough of the AMC's Lou! This is a car I've wanted since they first came out and I was 14. I read the HOT ROD magazine road test over and over and I think it went 14.85 with the 4-speed if memory serves. Even back then you never saw them on the street and I could never understand why it wasn't more popular. I wish I could go back in time and order a 4-speed 285hp 360/4bbl in Electric Blue. What a fun little car, you made my day Lou!

      My best is 14.90 at 96 at the 1973 National College Drag Racing Championship at the now disappeared Dallas International Speedway. I won my class and made it to the semi-finals overall. It was ET bracket racing.

      Hey dude! If you can research online ( not so sure) a magazine called Muscle Car Review did a spot on an AMC Hornet S/C 360 in Electic Blue with white stripes from a guy who bought the car up from our friends up north in 🇨🇦! It was striking and awe inspiring for any AMC fanboy. Hope you can enjoy that, but if not just imagine this wonderful example Lou brought to our attention in that way! Long live old American iron!

    Well, Lou, as an AMC enthusiast, thank you! This car and its pedigree is a Holy Grail.
    The 360 doesn't get a lot of love as it was always overshadowed by the 390 and 401. It was a great motor with pahlentee of oomph. Especially in a light car like that.
    Man...what a find... Good on you.

    Wonderful and VERY rare car! The Hornet was a GREAT compact car...a Richard Teague design! AMC engines were
    famous for their power and durability...and the 290/304, 343/360 and 390/401 V8s were no exception. These V8s
    were "overbuilt" and "understressed"...as a result, even though AMC is long gone, these V8s are much sought after
    by engine builders and racers. My Mom was the proud owner of 3 Hornets...a 1971, a 1974 and a 1978 Sportabout
    wagon. Mom was a 1st grade school teacher for nearly 30 years, and she had the habit of naming EVERYTHING.
    Her first Hornet was Irwin, the second was Mumford and the Sportabout was Streak...she was a "fun" person and I
    miss her dearly! Thanks for another GREAT post, Lou!

    We had a 1971 AMC Hornet SST coupe with the 258 6 cylinder.....I always remembered the AC ducts on the package tray below the dash having flip up covers like he mentioned, not the vents that the later models had. Neat car and I recall in the early 2000s finding one for sale...but having a toddler and another on the way, couldn't justify buying it.

    I've noticed that you've been finding a lot of survivors that are in pristine condition lately, which is a real treat! Ken Martin, who you featured in this video ordered this AMC Hornet SC 360 brand new from the factory, and he's kept this car in perfect condition along with some personal touches. One owner car stories always intrigue me. Graduating from high school and getting to order a car like this Hornet is something special. The 360 CI engine sounded healthy, the exterior paint is in excellent condition along with the interior which is also in excellent condition as well. Another fine survivor Lou!

    My dad ordered a 71 Hornet with a 258, 3 speed manual transmission and posi rear axle. He could have gotten a SC 360 for $45 more but wanted the fuel economy due to having 3 kids. I still have the car and some day plan on putting the 71 360 4spd in it I got out of a 71 Javelin 25+ years ago. Thanks for the video.

      I've had no problems with mine but, working at the dealership saw some of failures. We sold a fleet of 1970 Ambassador police cars and gave us the most problems. The Borg Warner has a high line pressure and engages aggressively - high idle engagement is the killer, IMHO. I don't know if you noticed in the video, but it still chirps the tires on the 1-2 shift.

    • @albertcarello619
      @albertcarello619 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @325xitgrogetter: I had a 1972 AMC MATADOR with a 369cubic inch V8 2 barrel and that car is mighty fast even chirping the tires. The Torque Command 3'speed automatic transmission by Chrysler really gave it a performance edge.

    Nice car here. Those AMC Hornets were popular cars with government agencies in the United States 🇺🇸 and Canada 🇨🇦. A friend I know owns a 1971 AMC Hornet 4-door sedan. It is finished in alpine white with a blue vinyl interior. It was used by the United States Navy. The car was used by both navy personnel and civilian employees. If you went to high school back in the day, you would see that car in the parking lot. It was used by Navy recruiters to go from the office to the high school and college campuses to recruit new people to either enlist or to become officers. They also used it to take prospects to MEPS (Military Entry Processing Station) to take the ASVAB test, get a physical exam, or ship out. Another place they would go to is the local reserve training center for the ASVAB test. He bought the car from someone who previously got it at an auction for surplus vehicles. He also owns a blue 1976 AMC Hornet 4-door sedan, and that was a car used by the United States Air Force. Both cars have the 232 cubic inch six and have the split bench seat with dual recliners.

    Wow- so unique ! Lou, I made a comment in a previous video that my late Step- Dad was an AMC salesman for a dealership in Pasadena , CA ( Fox’s Five Acres if anyone from SO CAL recognizes that). And he sold my mom a kid 70’s Hornet Wagon. It’s so rare to see these American Motor out there. So cool. And loved Ken’s drag racing stories. Hilarious!

    I'm still chuckling at the 'go-pack'. Yeah I'll have me one of them please. If only he had sprung the extra for the four speed. Most of those, like the Gremlins all came with inline six cylinders. Very few came with small blocks. I don't know what the weight is on that Lou but I'd figure it's pretty light. It was another small unibody car made to be a grocery getter. But it's all about that special horsepower to weight ratio, and I'll bet that car would run respectable times in the quarter mile just the way she sits now. Cheers Lou, and thanks for showing her to us! A Super Cool 360! (sounds like she's got a mild cam)

    What a cool car. Most would never think nor suspect a Hornet of being fast/quick. I personally have never seen an SC 360 in person. I do however kind of remember my Grandma having a Hornet wagon. Same green color... hehe. They must have been decent cars in their day because my Grandpa was a stickler, hard nosed, bargaining, wheeling dealing, no BS kind of guy. If you convinced him it was decent enough to put his gal in it it must have been good. :) Very cool rare car. Awesome to see it in such great shape and in the original owners hands still. I love your videos. I know I drag on and on if one happens to strike a memory from my past. But I will not appologise.. LOL Thats why Im here. To relive and learn. Take care Lou.

    I have a paperback book by Lisa Roy Sachs called "Cheap Wheels" from 1989. Great read. The book discusses various cars and there is a mention of the AMC Hornet. It apparently is a favorite of shade tree mechanics to work on because of it's low tech layout and parts. It indicated AMC's "anvil-tough" 258 cubic inch six cylinder is a very reliable engine.

    Fact: The S/C on the AMC S/C was called "Supercar" since Muscle Cars in the 1960s-1970s were referred to as "Supercars" instead of "Muscle Cars". Some still referred to them as Muscle Cars, while some referred to them as Supercars. The terms were easily more recognizable and referred to correctly with the release of more supercars in the 1970s like the Ferrari 512 BB, Porsche 911 930 Turbo, and more, going on in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.

  • @todddenio3200
    @todddenio3200 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I had a good laugh listening to him telling about those racing adventures. All I can say about the guys who challenged him to race is... SILLY BOYS.. Yes the 396 Chevelle SS' were hot, and so were the 390 Fairlanes and even the 401 Matador Coupes were pretty hot --especially for their size and weight... (I had one and speak from personal experience with the Matador Coupe. Yes, all 3 of those cars had more cubic inches, more horsepower, and more torque than the Hornet S/C360 but they also had more of something else than the Hornet S/C360.... WEIGHT.. In comparison to the Hornet S/C360, those other cars were HEAVY.. And in comparison the Matador Coupe was outright OBESE. The Hornet S/C360 were very respectable performers and were a force to be reckoned with for those who encountered one. Other than the AMC and Javelins, AMC is often overlooked as performance cars as most people have never even heard of the S/C Rambler, Rebel Machine, or Hornet S/C360. Due to lack of funds and resistance from the higher-ups in management, AMC had entered the performance arena too late and in too small of numbers to be taken seriously in racing which is sad because they had the potential to be serious contenders.
