    I agree with you. I like the AMCs. Had a 68 javelin with the 232 straight 6. It obviously wasn't fast but back in the 90s got positive attention every place I went. The challenger was cool but that hornet was right on it. Great underdog car👍. I guess the sc360 was built to go up against the Nova and duster back in the day. You're video is five stars. Awesome job 👌

    Wow I did not expect the Hornet to even hang. Never liked AMCs when I was in high school, but have some respect now. In about 1982 a 70s AMX caught fire and burned-up in front of my house weirdly enough.

    Good example of weight advantage and HP advantage. With similar reaction times, the Hornet jumps ahead at the launch due to it's lighter weight. The Challenger's 440 with big HP overcomes the air resistance at high speed and pulls ahead. The overall races were very close, and this was a great matchup.

    Saw a lot of hornets back then. Even had a friend with a green six cylinder and he loved it. Notice I said he because friends opinions differ. Out of all those cars over all those years I never saw one with a 360. Rare and cool. Bet there aren't that many in this kind of shape either.

      @@plap. There is a registry for these cars and 129 are known to exist. Yes it's a hoot to drive alright. My dad turned it into a dragcar and I tried talking him out of pulling the interior and such. He didn't listen but now he wishes he did. The car is at my cousin's, so at least I know she is out of the elements. My dad's was actually this same blue and all of that. It's an automatic from the factory. Column shift. The car went 11s being AMC powered. Putting anything else in it would be blasphemy

      @@Sumner1028 completely agree and 11s are nothing to sneeze at. I would even do some digging for interior stuff because the way things are going any car this rare and cool will always be loved. I always wanted a '71 SC 360 like this, but back in high school in the early 80's I had two '77 Hornet AMX's. Both were in Sunshine Yellow, black interiors, with the standard 258 2V, with automatics. The AMX package came standard with a 258 2V, close ratio 4-speed, a limited slip rear, and heavy duty suspension with handling package. My first one had a shift kit, and that Mopar 904 trans wouldn't shift out of 2nd until you let up on the pedal at around 80 mph when the engine sounded like it was about to blow. I raced a guy in a new '83 Trans Am with the 305 4-barrel HO, and beat him by 2 car lengths, 3 times in a row. He wanted to know what I had under the hood, and didn't believe me when I told him it was a stock 6-cylinder. I always wanted to build my 2nd one into what they should've made. A 360 4-barrel, 4-speed, using an original '77 360 4-barrel from a Matador cop car. I miss those cars, they were rare unique looking cars, and my 2 were the only ones around my area. 🧏‍♂️

    Exactly what my family thought when I started working on a 1970 AMC Ambassador. Great project to start with, vinyl top is still in good shape and so is the body (which is pretty rare out here in Nebraska)
    Funny enough it's got a 360 as well. Factory 4 barrel as well. Most of my family owns Chevy small block 350 powered stuff, so it's kinda neat to have something different (if a bit of a pain when I need to find parts) Hoping it's gonna be a nice big boat for cruising once I'm done.

    The 440s torque overcame the weight disadvantage but give the Hornet credit with giving up 80 cubic inches and only 8.5 compression as well was very respectful it just ran out of steam with 4.10 gears probably would be a little quicker with 3.90 gears. I just built a 360 for my AMC Spirit drag car and it makes 400 hp with a small cam and the Spirit weighs 2300lbs and will run low 11s with 3.70 gears

    • @peteloomis8456
      @peteloomis8456 ปีที่แล้ว

      AMC V-8s use the same 906 sized lifters as the Mopar engines do so the cams they both can run can have faster ramp speeds than other engines from GM and Ford . For big block Chrysler engines the faster the ramp speed and providing the cam is what's called a 80% duration cam it's actual duration is 80%of it's advertised duration so it has a fast ramp speed and the faster the ramp speeds are the more power the big block Chrysler engines makes . This was kept a secret for many years with the Mopar racers that knew this and it gave them an advantage over the GM and Ford guys but they eventually found out about this and now you have Chevrolet and Ford guys that are taking their engine blocks in and are having the lifter bores opened up and sleeved for larger lifters to take advantage of the faster ramp speeds on custom ground cams for those engines .

      @@dodgesportsman772 a 401 will bolt right in, in place of a 304, the only V8 that came in Gremlins. The blocks are the same size externally, internally, larger bore and stroke, and 390 and 401 had forged cranks, and rods. 360 - 401 also had bigger valves. Due to internal strength, in the blocks, and heavier cranks, a 401 is about 100 pounds heavier than a 304. You're welcome!

      @@ramblerdave1339 thx... But his is all original with the 401. Has original build sheet... It's a rare one I guess. But I don't know that much about AMC, I'm a Mopar man myself. Although I do own a javalin

    Damn, I bought a little ‘68 Hornet back in ‘88. Paid $650. It was a 258(?) inline six w/ a 3 on the tree. That little car did unreal burnouts - people always freaked when I popped the hood. Car only had 58k on the clock. I loved that car, but my wife (ex now) made me sell it. Sure wish I had kept it - it drove so nice, & had unreal power for a six.

    Great matchup! The Hornet was nothing to look at...but better than the Gremlins and Pacers, lol! The AMX and Javelins were cool, though. I was really shocked by the weight of these cars...a very entertaining race!

    Hornet definitely held its ground. Even with a 4spd it ran very consistant, and impressive times. Not too shabby AMC.

    The S/C is pretty low key compared to some AMC’s from just before, like the Rebel Machine and the SCrambler. A sleepy look gets more street action.

    I'm impressed by the AMC price! Ida paid today's money for a new one! There has to be a catch unreliability? Expensive dealer fees back then?

    The MPH was much higher in the Challenger every time. That makes the 440 less quick only from traction and or driver. AMC weight stated was not with driver.
