If this is enough to make you think he shouldn't be Cap, you never were on board with him being Cap in the first place.

I agree. Everything Anthony said on the subject is exactly the same as Chris Evans when he was interviewed for the first Captain America movie. Even from a comic perspective I believe Captain America would respond the same way.

If you read the comic books in the 1970s, you know that the whole point of the Sam Wilson character is to introduce the topic of racism to Captain America stories. Anthony Mackie is demonstrating that he is absolutely the right person to play Captain America. You don't make a Black character Captain America without saying some pretty harsh things about racism, you just don't. That doesn't honor the source material in my opinion.
And yes, we all know that if you criticize racism, the fake fans will get their knickers in a wad. I wouldn't worry about that. Their knickers are permanently wadded and will never be unwadded given that they make their money by being permanently offended any time there isn't enough racism or misogyny in popular media.

As a non-american, the idea that I got from his statement was that America as an idea and as a country doesn't stand for keeping the word, honor, dignity, integrity, isn't trustworthy and dependable.
Even more when you see the position of Hollywood and many celebrities towards the current president and how many said that they would abandon the country (but don't) and many other things, it really seems like he's saying that the current country is trash because he is unhappy with the decision of the country and with its people.
This is the idea that I got from him as a non American.
I'm not saying that it is what he actually feels, just the image that he passed on. I know that the context of this is an interview outside of the US to promote the country on Europe, but I think his choice of words (if it was his choice) were incredibly poor.
He could have either phrased it as Captain America not only standing for America's values, but as well as other countries which also share those values. Or that the OG Captain America fought in WWII not just for America, but also for other countries and this new one seeks to follow his path.
There, you just promoted Captain America to non America countries without making it look like you are trash talking America.
The difference between the other speeches you presented and this statement are that those speeches are in comics under a situation where the government is clearly wrong or corrupt. This one is a statement is done by a real person that almost appears like he is injecting his personal spin and politics into the character because he disagrees with the way the country is currently.
And I've said it before and I'll say it again, actors vastly overestimate themselves, they are entertainers, they are there to play a role, promote their product and receive their paycheck, not to patronize anyone because people want to be entertained, not lectured. They are glorified clowns, and them believing they can exert so much power as to make people follow their decisions only makes them fully fledged clowns.

You hit it on the nose. I feel like people complaining about what Anthony said or even just Sam Wilson as a standalone character they forget what Roger’s stood for to begin with and if you realize that point then you understand Sam has carried the torch amazingly

I understand the point, but saying that there’s no problem with what Mackie said isn’t even hitting the point of why his statement is controversial. What he said was extraordinarily vague and isn’t helped that his choice of words doesn’t aren’t good ones either. We can say that Cap represents the American Values the country should strive to be, but Mackie said “I don’t think the term America should be one of those representations” which specifically hits at the idea of America, i.e. American Values. We can make our own assumptions as to what he meant, but that statement should be at minimum questionable, if not criticized.

At worst, the statement needs more clarification. At best, the statement is exactly fine as is and reflects the philosophy of the character very accurately.

Thank you for the civil discussion. I agree that his wording could be seen as vague. On his instagram he does clarify that he believes the values Captain America represents are not unique to just Americans but to many people from around the globe. Captain America represents the values of more than one nation.

Yeah problem is the controversy of the statement is that it is truth; America does not and has not ever followed the ideals it presents to the world or its people; America has always been a lie; if America's culture wasnt as such then Mackie would have no reason to say that, but he did and hes fuckin RIGHT.
Palestine is where this discussion ends point blank period but lets get to the root of it
America is NOT a nation with its foundations in immigration
Its foundation is steeped in the delusional belief of Superiority its people believed themselves to have when the first colonizers stepped foot on its shores.
Those colonizers than Sold that land and promise to those they brought with them to help with the colonizing
Then they brought the people from Africa and traded them like property because
THEY BELIEVED themselves to be superior hence not worthy of the same conditions
then they Sold the American dream to the WORLD when they wanted cheap labor to exploit the land more efficiently
Americas FOUNDING PRINCIPLES TO THIS DAY:
is the Exploitation of the Earth and the Genocide of its people
So Those who benefit the most from they continuation of this system (capitalists and the management class)
CAN SELL OUR PLANET BACK TO US, FORCE US TO COMPLY, AS THEY ARE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK
America DOES NOT represent who Captain-America is or DO YOU NEED A HISTORY LESSON?!
What then do you might ask, do I believe Captain America represents?
The answer is without question, Social Anarchism,
a political movement and system that exists to defend and encourages the creation of
a Society principled upon All People's "Equality, Liberty, Uniqueness, Own-ness and Solidarity"
      If that doesn't sound like what Cap is "supposed" to represent;
Shit you wouldnt know what Americans (say) they believe if it smacked you in the face
And if thats not what Americans believe in; Then fuck "America" forever and Always
We never needed "America" we need Social Anarchism
"A society has all the criminals it deserves" - Emma Goldman
"It is Liberty who is the mother, not the daughter of Order" - Tucker
"a better world is possible" and so I say "All Power to All People" 🏴♾

And if Cap Leads the Avengers that Means the A of the Logo stands for Anarchism
as our "avenging" does not mean were hunting people down
We are avenging the memory and wishes of all those who came before us
      and were denied
      Their wish to be Free
