My Sanyo VCR is acting up just like the one you fixed. I have a different model yet the symptoms are the same. I'm getting same setup menu displayed instead of the tape playing and the ejecting without pressing the eject button. I live in the SE US and should expect that function mode switch to be oxidized/corroded like this one. You gave me confidence to at least try this fix before I toss it out and buy another. Brilliant! That incandescent light affecting the sensor is mad lol - That would have driven me nuts trying to work out where the fault was when the light was actually a part of the problem.
Well, learned some things in tutorial. The lighting, once again the mode switch cleaning. Just seeing you disassemble it and put things back together is a learning thing. I found repetition helps even though the machines are a bit different with each brand. All are basicly the same principles. It's like when I worked on so many different aircraft. The electrical principles are all the same but they are just manufactured different. Different components that do the same thing.... These machines are a sized down airplane so to speak for me to learn. Thanks for all of the show and tell. My eyes have been glued. Now the more difficult machines, I'll have to take a little at a time.

I would absolutely be interested in seeing you work on a obscure unit just because I haven't come across any educational videos on them online yet and I've got a few. I have a sanyo beta, Iv fixed some toploaders, and have also gotten frustrated and gave up on a cupple. Could you please do some educational videos working on some old loids early frontloaders, panasonic toploaders or maybe even on some old beta stuff? I've learned so much from your channel and it has helped me so much tinkering and learning, and having poor eyesight its easy to grasp the concepts as everything is very well narrated and camera work is great too. You and the My Mate VINCE channel have helped me so much and I have been able to get the job done on a lot of projects because of it.
I noticed with your contact cleaner you have a straw, i guess to stop it shooting everywhere but is it ok to clean one of these mode switches without the straw attached, as ive just a standard bottle of contact cleaner. thanks.
Excellent explanation. But let me make a question, I have a JVC 6 head(intelligent) the mechanism is locked, I cleaned already the swithch mode, but still locked. Thanks a lot

Hi, @12voltvids . I recently got a free Panasonic PV-7661 VCR, and it has some issues that i'm not sure how to fix. It was very dirty, probably from being outside for a long time, so after cleaning it here's the issues with it: It kind of does the randomness that this VCR you had does, but it also follows a pattern. First, the motor to accept the tape doesn't turn on. After repeated tries, it accepts it and the head spins, but tries to eject it and it gets stuck. After that happens a few times, it takes it in and ejects it on its own. Then, it plays, but the picture is very dim, red and distorted. Then, after a bit, it works fine. This happens every time I want to start it up. I tried the method in the video, but it didn't work. How can I fix this? Thanks.
Hi Dave. I've watched this video a few times and opened up a similar Sanyo unit I possess with problems such as you show. The method and screw locations are very similar for tear-down but there's no encoder switch on the motherboard. I see circuits hidden by gears on the drive chassis, so with nothing to lose I'll attempt to pop off gears and see what's below (paying attention to timing marks). There must be an encoder somewhere ---- if you have a clue perhaps a short reply would be appreciated else consider this design type as a future video. Thanks again.
The easiest way to locate the mode switch is usually to start at the capstan and trace either the wires connected to it, or follow the trace on the board. There will usually be a minimum of 3 traces or wires between the two.

My Sears (Sanyo) VCR from 1991 I think appears to have some kind of grounding issue. There are white/kinda transparent lines in the picture that are always visible (they do not appear when the VCR isn't doing anything or is in the menus). During playback they move upward slowly, during FF they move downward, during pause they move upward faster... There are 2 ground wires inside the machine, one needs to be screwed to the heatsink in the power supply, the other to the video head amp. When I screw them to said things the lines become less visible but they do not totally disappear... Do you know what might be wrong here? Yes I have tried to put them elsewhere, inverse them, put them together... I've also tried putting the metal covers back on the VCR, trying different TVs and monitors, both RF and composite, even tried different power outlets, of course I tried different cassettes... I cannot get these lines to disappear!
Yes definitely a grounding issue. There should be a ground electrode that grounds out the video head. On some it is on the top, and on other machines on the bottom. Typically a copper spring with a carbon electrode that contacts the spindle on the motor.
12voltvids The "static brush" appears to be in good shape. Lifting it does not seem to affect the audio and video in any way at all. I've seen an "isolation transformer" for sale at a local antique store. I've heard that those could get rid of what is called "ground loops". I wonder if it could make a difference with my VCR... Yeah I'm not really an expert on the subject hahaha.
I've got a late Hitachi that's doing similar things. I've stripped it down hoping to find a mode switch like you've shown on many of your repairs but it's not got one.
Any idea how to align the gears on an emerson? I only see one arrow on one gear and nowhere to align it with. The mode switch also has an arrow but again can't figure out when to point it.
Never mind. I found the other point on the mode switch and just aligned the hole in the gear with the knob sticking out of it. Fyi for anyone else with an emerson.
I followed everything you did suspecting the encoder switch and found that the belt was snapped in two I guess from sitting for years and had dry rotted. Where do I get replacement belts and how do I know what size. I have some but they are too long thanks!! Great Video!!
You measure the belt. Take a piece of dental floss and wind it around the pulleys. tie it tight. Then cut it and measure it. Belts are ordered in inches or milimeters. If the dental floss measured say 2.4" you subtrack 10% from the size and order that.square belts are ordered as SBS for small SBM for medium and SBL for large plus the number you measure. For round belts it would be RBS RBM RBL, and for the flat capstan type FBS, FBM and FBL.
you're awesome. I have numerous VCR's and DVD's combos. I want to fix them all. can you help?1. Sylvania DVD player/VCR recorder. spits tape out. everything else works fine. 2. Sony DVD/VCR dual recorder (awesome) but old remote broke while stuck on "mode 3" and now no matter how many universal remotes I buy I can't fix it - to open menu, set up the unit, clock, programming... you name it. I broke the VCR part and now it too spits out tape. 3. Sanyo VCR tracking is terrible. I used to tap the top of the unit and it would "fix right up" and show a beautiful picture but even now that doesn't work either. 4. Sony DVD player, VCR recorder - DVD says there's "no disc." I'm going to try the methods you just showed to see if that'll fix the problems. thank you again!!!
For #2, you can look up a remote for the model and order a new one on eBay, for #1, try greasing the take-up and supply reel plus make sure there is nothing loose around it. Also make sure the lock on the tape you are using wasn't pushed in too far and got permanently locked. #3, if there is a white noisy bar across the screen that moves with the tracking, open it up and play the tape. Twist the top of the first pull out spindle with a flathead screwdriver until it's gone. If there is just bad picture, try cleaning the head drum with a q-tip side to side with 70% alcohol. #4, not too sure, but you could make sure no connections were loose internally.
Nutrol is one of many contact cleaners. Deoxit is another great cleaner. WD40 will also clean contacts, however i don't recommend that unless it is WD40 electrical contact cleaner.
@@12voltvids darn okay so not even a basic like rubbing alcohol or something like that will work? kind of seems like I will have to purchase a chemical purely for this that I will probably only use once so wanted to avoid that route if at all possible
Yes in one form or another. Early ones used optical sensors. Some used pin switches, liner slide switches and of course the rotary type but they all have them. Every single one. The microprocessor needs to know what mechanical position the mechanism is in.
Am I the only one who thinks those crappy head cleaners that touch the drum when the guides come in do more harm than good, every video I've ever worked with these head cleaners in you can see scoring on the drum on the area it touches. I always take them out

I just realized, VCRs are like the engine timing on cars. “Eject mode” is like “top dead center” on piston 1.

Jessie4Pink head cleaner tapes cause more damage. bent guides scored drums. you name it. bad news
