- Scout leaders have banned the terms “falling on deaf ears”, “man-made” and “dinner ladies” so as not to hurt anyone's feelings. A new style guide also outlaws “maiden name” and “Christian name”.
It comes as reports suggest the SAS has advised soldiers to avoid using nicknames such as “Doris”, “Ruperts” and “Crabs” over fears they could be deemed offensive.
Soldiers have now been urged to stop calling female personnel “Doris”, while calling officers “Ruperts” is also being banned.
The nicknames have been defended by some within the SAS, with one person describing them as “banter”.
In 2017, Scout leaders were told to stop calling kids “boys” and “girls” - and use phrases such as “hello everybody” instead.
The Scouts said: “Every year Scouts takes a census of membership. This information is vital for supporting members.
"The census asks for the same questions no matter what your age.”

Why shouldn't the Scouts encourage children to use politically correct language?

I’m 66 and I’ll be damned if I’m going to change or watch what I say for anyone. I have a Christian name, my mother had a maiden name, I sometimes wear manmade fibres, I remember dinner ladies and sometimes I say things which fall on deaf ears.

I went to my local cottage hospital yesterday and the middle aged receptionist asked me my christian name. I did chuckle but then admired her for sticking her fingers up to pc wokeness.

The "dinner ladies" at my primary school are a fond memory. They were all awesome. No one is taking that away from me, or them. They did a great job and clearly got a kick out of it, by making us behave. They played their part and got respect for it. I still know of one that is still alive today and she is well known amongst my generation. We won't hear a bad word against her. She's a legend.

Does this mean that we are no longer allowed to have nicknames, which, in the main part, were shown as a sign of acceptance? Can I no longer mention splitarses? Or lumpy jumpers?
Most of these words have become fossilized, meaning that no one still thinks of the literal meaning when they say them. They have come to stand for a concept. So 'maiden name' is recognized by all and sundry as the surname a woman had at birth. Yes, there may be more women now who never changed their names. If asked their 'maiden name' they can say, "Same as I gave you." No one literally believes that women who haven't married are maidens in the sense of 'virgin.' And it's only in the last 50 years that some women have chosen not to take their husband's name in marriage, so it's hardly offensive to ask.
No kids use those phrases anyway?! I've been a teacher for 8 years never heard them once in any of my classrooms; apart from the word dinnerladies and we always had lovely women serving us.
Surely the scouts can teach these kids something else that's useful?? Madness!!!
