  • A lot has changed in football since Matt Le Tissier retired. He believes that players should be able to play with a sense of enjoyment and at the end of the day it is just a game, not life and death. It should be about entertainment and joy not stress and fame.

Possibly the most underrated player of all time. His England cap count is a crime. He's exactly what they were missing all those years. A great technical player who can keep the ball, pass to his own players, create things, score goals and almost guaranteed to get something special out of him. Every bit as good as Gazza but without all the baggage!

For many years I was a fan of West Brom, watching them countless times home and away through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. One of my heroes in the early days was a centre-half by the name of Joe Kennedy. A great player who did play for England, but only a couple of times because he played at the same time as Billy Wright - who was always first choice. Working as a service engineer in the late 1960s in West Bromwich I used to go to the home of his wife's parents. By this time Joe had retired and I asked them on one visit what he was doing. 'Oh, he's back working in a factory', they said, 'where he worked before his football days'. A few years later I read in the local newspaper that he had collapsed and died at work - aged 60. Most of today's lot wouldn't be fit to polish his boots.

In the late 1960's I worked in a small metal bashing factory in Birmingham and the wharehouse man was Fred Deakin who in his younger days was a professional footballer for Aston Villa football club. At that time his son Alan was the captain of the same club. As a young 17 year old I was a bit taken aback that a professional footballer ended up looking after the stores in the small factory. In conversation with him about his wages playing for one of the top teams in the English football league, it transpired he was on 14 pound a week when at that time your average apprentice served tradesman like an electrician, plumber & gas fitter or bricklayer was on 10 to 12 pound a week. Although he had no regrets about what he earned he was a bit scathing In his remarks about what the difference had then become between a professional footballer and a tradesman. I can vividly remember his dead pan answer when I asked when and what caused this big jump in player's wages.
"When the f'kin news papers took the pictures of the pretty boys like Georgie Best out of back pages and put them on the f'kin front pages turning the sport into f'kin show business.

I think players should be paid on their performance instead of getting a guaranteed sum each week. Too many players taking huge wages don't turn up each week ( example Lukaku) these players can destroy clubs. If they play well then reward them, if they have a stinker then they get less wages. I also think there should be an incentive for players to get promoted regarding their wages, If you get promoted your wages increase.

Nothing like a hairbrained idea and yours is. Club and player sign a contract. It says how much the player is paid. It does not say how well you have to play. How could you get players to sign if their salary varied from week to week depending on how somebodies opinion of how well or how poorly they played any given week? Who would be the arbiter of this vague notion? What if the player disagreed that he had a poor game? What if the player was carrying an injury? I could go on but I think you get the picture. As I said a hairbrained idea.

@paul baker. The reason why Lukaku wasn’t playing well is because of Chelsea. I’m not a Chelsea fan in any senses, but everywhere Lukaku has played well he’s been THE GUY, as West Brom, Everton, Inter, and Belgium. Lukaku is a old fashioned target man that likes crosses, Chelsea don’t play that way and neither did Man United.
You need to play to Lukaku’s strengths and Chelsea and Man United didn’t.

Footballs a murky business. Who’s to say they wouldn’t set the cap at 250k . All sorts of backhanders would start as well. Plus contract manipulations where they would make it very easy to earn significantly more than the cap by performance related add ons . The thought of the savings the club would make going to the fans is fanciful sadly. More likely to line the pockets of shareholders. Footballers are overpaid but they are also in the entertainment business and football generates an awful lot of money. They deserve a cut.

Yes but Matt, it's what they do with that money and how they react to it, take for instance, Paul Pogba, his team are a machine and he thinks that he's better than he is and he also plays on the fact that he's being treated as a superstar, like his contract renewal, because they couldn't agree a figure, he decides to take 8 months out 'recovering', even though he was able to play basketball 🙄, from his injury when back in the day, there would be no player in the league take that length of time out of the game, but he feels he's allowed it and we suffered for it without him, that's how it's ruined football, because the players believe that they're worth more than they are capable, that's wrong!

I absolutely detest the argument that footballers get paid too much money. They get paid what the market determines they are worth. They are monitored under a microscope, number of passes, how far they have run per game, touches of the ball everything. Those statistics are analysed and an opinion is made as to the value the clubs are willing to pay. They operate in a near perfect model of capitalism with the only thing throwing a spanner in the works is the length of the contract which over time will either demonstrate whether the player was an amazing purchase, whether the club got a good deal or whether the player was a dud. These players are literally the best in the world at what they do. All you need is a ball and some mates to figure out if you're any good. Motorsport on the other end of the spectrum in almost all cases you need a massive head start.. cue Mummy and Daddy and some cash (Lewis Hamilton is an exception but his Dad worked his nuts off and threw everything at it) I can guarantee there is kid in Africa who if given the chance could smoke anyone on the F1 grid. There are other professions not in the limelight where people at the top of their game get the salary of many multiples that footballer do. Finally the money comes from abroad Abu Dhabi etc and is spent by the footballers in England. Super expensive apartments built by regular guys like me who earn some cash to feed my family. In restaurants where waiters, chefs and cooks take that money to feed their families. Let also not forget the taxes paid too, the tourism revenue and and and..... I really wish this argument would go away. Footballer's I salute you. Thank you
