    True that in french the spinning back kick is mostly called "coup de pied retourné" which means litterally "turned-over kick". Implying you have to turn around, being then able to turn over your kick, like turning over your underwear after training.

    In this video, the turning(spinning is 360 degrees or more) back kick is done where the heel will impact on the target and the toes are downwards. The same as doing the back kick. In side kick the side of the kicker is toward the target and the outer edge of the foot will impact the target.

    Thanks this helps. I used to do TKD and I was taught to throw the kick as if doing a sidekick with the added spin/turn but I started doing another Martial art and learning its spinning back kick which is similar to what you demonstrate except we pitch our upper body downward with our face looking down at the ground so our entire body becomes this horizontal line, toes down heel up. striking with the flat of the foot.
    It's taking me awhile to get used to doing it versus what I am used to with TKD, I always lose balance and im used to making the full turn so I can see my target. You can't with the new technique i'm taught. Kinda have to see out of the corner of the eye and throw the quick fast.
    My Sifu does it so effortlessly and quickly. There is less chambering.

  • @akashneelim8773
    @akashneelim8773 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    YAY! You're back- & that too in two weeks time! I'm so glad. :) Anyway great tip. I also faced the over-rotation problem in my initial attempts at doing the Spinning Back Kick. I agree that lot of it came from the name itself. That's why I prefer the term "turning back kick" (or- maybe- I don't know- "half- spin back kick" or something :P :D ).
    By the way, I also use my shoulders to counter- rotate so that I don't turn sideways while throwing the kick. Also, through my experimentations with this kick (& believe me, there were a lot) I have come to the conclusion that, during turning to do the kick, from where & when you lift your leg for chambering plays a key role in determining whether you'll over rotate & not.
    Anyway thanks for sharing the tip. Hope to see more tutorials from you soon. Have a nice day... :)

    Joe Rogan is of the same mind about the 'spinning' part. He calls it "Turning Side Kick", which is slightly more succinct than "Turn Around Side Kick", but the psychological concept is definitely helpful. Great lesson once again, Ando!
    Only thing I'd add is that people should try and practice this as they would with the non turning variants.
    When throwing a side kick, I twist off the base foot, creating forward momentum by straightening my foot from infront of my body, perpendicular with the hip it's connected to. When launching the kick from its chambered position , I twist that base foot back to support the angling out of my body and give balance. I think I've seen you do the same. (Don't bring your toes all the way perpendicular and twist back for the turning versions, just bring them to the balancing position, so your hip is open and your toes are supporting your extended torso, otherwise you loose the power added by the spin. Hopefully that isn't confusing.)
    This creates forward momentum and carries the body weight forward an inch or so. I feel like it's important for the turning variations to also have an aspect of funneling the momentum of the spin into forward motion, as they're straight kicks, and should be going straight through an opponent(like a spear), rather than sweeping through it(like a sword), like a wheel/spinning hook kick.
    Worst case senario if you practice these kicks without driving the momentum forward into the kick, is that you'll take that power in your hips, which is rather painful at full speed. Does anyone disagree? If so I'm happy to hear what your thoughts are. :)

    Great video again:) You may have already said it somewhere, but still. I would fix the not turning part BEFORE the spinning. How I practised is standing at arms length facing the wall, placing my palms on it. This allows me to turn my head but not my shoulders or hip. Then I do the kick. Then for the spinning, I stand with my back to the wall and turn slowly then just touch he wall with both my hands lightly and kick. After a while you don't have to touch the wall and still keep the correct posture. It worked for me anyway.

    2 things here. 1. Obviosly we both name those kicks differently. To me the difference between a side kick and a back kick is how it's chambered, not delivered. But hey, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet ;)
    2. By observation of both myself and others I noticed that most power for a strike is generated when it starts at the opposite side of the body. Punches start from feet, kick from head/shoulders/arms. Am I right or am I blind?
    And yeah, loved the video. Keep posting them to make our lives happier. And fights shorter.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting comments, Piotr! 1. So, a back kick is chambered away from the target and the side kick chambers to the side? That's a cool way to think about it.
      2. It makes sense that a punch driving up from the ground will have more power than a punch that doesn't. As for kicks, I'll have to think about the use of the shoulders. I can see how a circular kick benefits, but not sure about straight line kicks. I'll play with it. Thanks for the comment!

    • @piotrlitwic5935
      @piotrlitwic5935 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ando Mierzwa 1. precisely, that's what I meant. Frankly, it's mainly because my hips won't bend back much, so I connect a back kick like any side kick.
      2. Straight line kicks benefit greatly from arm motion. Like throwing both arms up at the beginning of a front kick, or one arm before pivoting for a side kick. Try it out and see if it works for you just as well as for me:)

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great! I try not to move my arms before I kick so I don't give it away, but I can see how that helps! Thanks again, sir!

    Semantics aside, there are many ways to land this kick effectively. Turn, look, pick up and shoot. All in a smooth, uninterrupted fashion. I will tell you this about the knee vertical version though. It’s easy to block with a foot to the calf hamstring area or the hip. At that point your opponents back is to you and you are in a very good position to hurt him. Getting the lower leg on a horizontal plane from a tight chamber reduces the chance of the stop kick. And, no, it’s not necessary or desirable to turn your whole face to opponent. In fact, sighting over your shoulder with arms close to your torso is best. Once this version is mastered customizing the kick to the situation is fairly easy. I have landed this kick from the distance of a shoulder bump with a tight chamber. I have also snuck it in Nader an armpit with a vertical leg.

      @AndoMierzwa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely worth playing around a few variations to find the one that works for you. Thanks for the notes!

    Forget about what zombies might like to say. You are doing well.
    My favorite video of yours is the one, which was to teach hamstring flexibility as it has made the life easier for me, much more than expected, due to adding some flexibility to my legs, but more importantly I have found that would reduce the pressure on my back and also reduces my recovery cycle. Very unbelievable and really important for me to know.
    The moral of the story is that every little knowledge that is distributed could lead to more findings.
    On this video I would suggest that you make a second video to teach the important techniques for the back kick, before some kids hurt their ankles badly. You can bet I've got some experience in doing that :P :)
