For people assuming she should have ran away:
The assumption that she might have lived if she got out of the water, is very unlikely as 469 was predating on her for whatever reason. That means he was hunting her. He would have chased her down. She had to stand her ground as that was the only way that she might have saved herself. It's complicated but its similar to how you, as a human, in certain circumstances, would only have the chance to live if you fought back. This is usually your only recourse when a bear decides that instead of just mauling you, it's going to EAT you. If a grizzly wants to eat you and is calmly stalking you like prey, or he rushes you and despite you attempting to play dead, he starts casually eating you, you're probably dead meat. Black bears on the other hand are more likely to respond to you attacking back, because you're more evenly matched sometimes and for other reasons we don't know. But yeah that logic, the logic of it being a bit of a more even match might help you understand why her defending herself and not backing down was her best bet, especially because the bears were VERY evenly matched. I do admit though that fighting out of the water would probably have made it much harder to kill each other...and she obviously couldn't have drowned (which is how she actually died,) but the chances were really high that he was going to kill her.
I know this stuff because there's a video about the incident where rangers and other people from the park or whatever explained what actually happened. The other bear behavior stuff can be verified by reading the book "Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance" by Stephen Herrero, which is the gold standard in the bear behavior world as far as I've seen, and a good read even for a casual bear enthusiast.

They call themselves professionals or that they try to teach people to be safe around bears but they always end up being mauled to death because they think they know what's going on. They don't, when something is unpredictable it is just that. Unpredictable. I have been hunting all my life. I have hunted brown bear and black bear. You will never know what a brown bear is going to do. They are the most unpredictable creature on this earth. Hippos being second. In bear country I am always carrying a side arm. Bear spray is a joke. Activists will say anything to protect animals at the expense of human life. I carry bear spray but my gun always comes out first. Human life is much more precious than a wild animals life. Mountain lions are another animal I despise in the woods. They are very unpredictable as well. Don't let animal lovers convince you otherwise. I love animals but will save a human before any animal.

In 40 minutes, he was back at the same fishing. He waded out to thr big 1 and I knew it was over, like we ser here. The big bear slapped small 1 around and then walked away into the bushes. If you watch carefully you will see at least 2 fresh wounds on the boar bears left shoulder. Probably from 402. He is a big bear and apparently wanted revenge. Mean is mean. Bears are so much like violent humans that the simply have no non-violent genes. They learn and remember just like us. Once that shoulder felt torn his grudge went into overdrive. Others have commented that if 402 had left the river she would have lived. I agree BUT...he would have attacked 402 every time they crossed paths and he would eventually have killed her when he had the opportunity. ONLY VERY FOOLISH PEOPLE THINK ANY BEAR IS JUST LIKE DISNEY PRODUCED MEDIA. No intelligent person can even passively think that way except in an environment COMPLETELY WITHOUT WILD ANIMALS. 402's passing makes room for another apex predator in a very deadly neighborhood. IF YOU BELIEVE IN "BAMBI" RENT A FANTASY THAT SAYS IT IS A FANTASY, STOP WATCHING ACTIVITY AMONG APEX PREDATORS THAT HOLD GRUDGES AND LOOK AT ONE ANOTHER AS FOOD, JUST LIKE THEY LOOK AT HUMANS.

Bears don't hold grudges; that is a human characteristic that people attribute to wild animals in the same way people anthropomorphize bears in Disney media. Bears don't look at things and categorize them either. They live on pure instinct which is based on opportunism. A person may be food or a threat. Another bear might be food or a threat or a mate; it all depends on the situation. People are a predator to bears, so a bear can see us as a threat (the entire reason momma bears go berserker all over humans to protect her cubs.) 402 didn’t stand a chance, 469 found an easy meal. 402 was also not a young female, yes bears will feed on other bears, there is a reason for that... bears do not like to use much energy in hunting, this was an easy kill for 469 and took complete advantage of the situation.
Know some are saying 402 was completely healthy, that should be questioned due to just her age alone!
469 is also a few 100 lbs heavier than 402.
The circle of life in the wild, the weak and frail are removed!
A new female will take into that role of mating and the cycle will continue!
469 at some point will succumb to the same fate of being eaten by other bears and animals!

There was much more to this story. 469 caught 402 and 477(on the shore) in the act. 469 was overcome by jealous rage. This wasn't the first time, you know. 469 could only be pushed so far. She was going to divorce him and take everything. He says she was the love of his life to this day. But he had to send a message. In the aftermath, it seems 469 and 477 have been seen denning together, though they claim to just be friends. Sure they are....... I was hoping 469 and 477 would just leave and start over somewhere else. I wasn't a fan of 402 but she didn't deserve to die like that.

      Yep, Bears Kill Other Bears.
Probably Kill More Bears Then They Do Any Ofher Animal In Fact. Cubs Are A Delicious Luxury Breakfast For Big Male Bears. They Wake Up Every Morning A Search For Females With Young Cubs, So They Can Kill The Cubs Specifically. Because If They Kill All Her Cubs, She Will Go Into Heat Again, And The Male Can "Mate" With Her. It's Funny & Sad, How City Folk, Especially Liberals, As Yourself (Call It A Wild Guess) All Seem To Think Bears Are Big Fluffy, Loving & Sweet Cuddly Animals. Who Eat Mostly Grass, Berries, Other Vegetation Etc. In Fact. Even The All Magical Internet Even Says That To Be True.

Biologists Put Collars On A Few Bears, With A Small Camera On Them. So They Could Track Them, Watch What They Do & Eat... We'll After Collecting Back The
