There’s a cool picture of Dale Sr. and Richard Petty sitting next to each other in that wood paneled room. It’s a damn shame what happened to Rockingham, that track deserved better.
The garage area and some of the infield was refurbished when Penske owned it. The plumbing for the entire place is still from 1965 when the track was built. It is said it'd take over a million bucks to renovate it. They just recently tore down the infield cafe where the drivers would eat before the driver's meeting. My wife used to work the chow line there in the early 80's in her late teens. Earnhardt Sr. said something out of the way as he was getting some food and she tossed a big stainless steel serving spoon full of mashed potatoes on him. She said it got real quiet until Earnhardt started laughing and the whole place busted up. I hope you met Jamie while you were there. I haven't gotten pasted the first few minutes of the video as I am typing this.

@@Stapleton42 I wish I knew you wanted to go up. We had our race control up there all day. No ac replaced yet but he said it was not all that hot after all.
I was the last fan to ever leave the track..After that 2004 race, I sat in my motorhome until dark when nothing but trashbags and me were there..The highway was opened, the state boys all gone..A track employee picking up trash called a security guard in a golf cart to get me to leave..I knew it was the last one, so I wanted to be the last person to ever leave the track. Always stayed at Snapper Patrick's house off of Chestnut Street there in Rockingham..Love me some Rockingham..Shout out to ole Mike Dipple of the NCSP..
He said that number 27 Genuine Draft car was owned by Raymond Beadle Blue Max racing. That is the team that Rusty Walace drove for when he won the 1989 Winston cup Championship. Is it possible that Rusty drove that ACTUAL car during his Championship season? Fun fact: Raymond Beadle was ALSO an NHRA nitro funny car team owner and driver of the Blue Max nitro funny car. He won 3 NHRA Winston Funny Car world championships himself, 79, 80, and 81. Lots of history there. Pretty cool!
I met a driver owner of retired cup cars at Watkins Glen years ago. He was selling the car he had there. Price was around 50k. He said he could get much more if it was sold internationally. Wealthy Arabs were buying many of the cars and shipping them to the middle east as toys. He wanted the car to stay in the US. Glad you guys are getting organized to have club events there. It will make the stock cars appreciate in value and get more of them restored.
I just love the fact that Logan is so excited about the history as you are. You definitely made the right move to North Carolina. Living the dream my friend.
Great video! It brought back memories of 1998 when I worked for the city of Raleigh and I went down there with a bunch of coworkers. We had a great weekend, and I saw some WILD stuff! I live that the track is still active and that they run vintage cars there. It is now a goal of mine to see another race there, and hopefully camp out on the old campground across the street. Thanks for the memories!
Sounds that track ain't heard in years. You could call this poetic. That sound...Make short tracks great again! Also, I can't lie, the idea of them next gen cars bum me out. Long live the old cup cars!
I would pay the guy in the Good Year hat to be my friend and talk about racecars. He's so genuine that it makes his enthusiasm perfect. What a great thing for him to be able to get his family's car back.
That story of him finding his family built Lumina is so awesome, it sounds so amazing, much better than today for sure. We have a track where I am from called Thunder Road, small ass track but some big names raced there and we would sit on the hill drinking beer, some great times and the sounds that Lumina makes, I am smiling my ass off right now!
I found your channel a few days ago and I can't stop watching your Nascar videos. The first video I ever watched was the Mark Martin dealership interview and then eventually the 2nd video where he took you around town to see his old shops. What a great guy Mark is...just like he seemed in any of his interviews he did at the racetrack. Love the "Rock" video where it was abandoned but being rehabed with that track worker and then watching this video you uploaded on Oct. 3rd with cars racing/practicing at "The Rock". Great Newell videos and the history behind the coaches driven by famous drivers. You, in my opinion, are the best I've seen documenting ANYTHNG Nascar. I do believe I will hit the subscribe button now. As a LONG time Nascar fan here I really appreciate what you do by showing us the in's and out's of Nascar the best you can with information and footage we don't normally see. What I'm saying to sums up very easily - thank you.
Yes try it out! I see ls people do the cylinder swap with the firing order. I have seen it done for more horsepower but no one ever dose a sound or throttle response test.
I remember I loved watching the cup races there as a teenager in the nineties, always loved watching Dale bulldozing through the field on the shorter tracks like this :)
Just seeing and hearing these cars on the track, i dont think i have stopped smiling since i heard that first car as they came out of that tunnel. man i feel like i kid again watching nascar and hearing the cars in the background while the reporters did interviews during the races.
Oh yes it did give me goosebumps!! That's what I remember growing up in the 80s and 90s. Till this day I'm still in awe how a 358cid (cup car) engine can put down that kind of power with a single holly 4 barrel carburetor that's normally aspirated! 'Member these old machines breaking records then! Especially in qualify. Elliott's car doing 210mph-212 at 'Dega with a body of a brick, bias ply tires, no roof rails, truck arms, and an old ford 9" in the back. Simple mechanical tech but damn near impossible to capture with today's cars. Gawd I miss old nascar Winston Cup and Busch Grand National Racing Thanks for sharing this video!
Definitely one of your best videos yet! I love seeing all of this old nascar stuff you've been showing. DW's old truck is another cool video. Keep it up, you're killing it!
I love your videos especially old race shops would love to see one on Elliot Brothers and how they made up a lap under green at Daytona maybe Talladega can't remember Thanks!!!
This whole thing made me fall back into the 90s! That 63 car sounded awesome! I loved the Lumina in their haydays. Loved listening to the car rundowns. It all just rushed right back.
Found your channel last week while working in the shop, Great content. Keep blazing your own path, Kudos to you and Logan.. Purchased some of your Merch Friday to show support for your channel, May even see you at the tracks next spring/summer next year. Well done Sir!...BRG.
I used to love going to Rockingham back in the day, it was one of my favorite tracks to watch a race in person at. I had connections that allowed me full access to the pits/garage area during the races which was awesome. I remember almost getting run over by Ted Musgrave in the 55 car when he came in hot to the hot pit area on the back stretch so the crew could work on the car during one of the races, so much fun! I remember Mark Martin blowing a tire going into the second turn and hitting the wall hard enough to tangle the gear shift lever in the steering wheel. I loved those days in NASCAR but it started going downhill in 1997 in my opinion when NASCAR tried to go Hollywood. I don't watch it anymore and only watch dirt track racing now.
I dig the old tracks and the acoustic sounds that they produced. I so got goosebumps hearing the roar of the exhaust from the old cars against the front stretch walls😊😊😊
The TH-cam algorithm finally got it right. Your channel showed up on my feed and I have found quite possibly the best channel on TH-cam. Keep up the good work. Now how can a guy get his hands on the retro goodwrench shirt? 😁

My first time there was 1999, you are bringing back so many memories. Can you just imagine 44 cars on track? The noise was deafening on pit road during race day.
Love the old school nascar sounds. Your videos kick ass and always the boom. Keep up the good work. Also hi to the doggo and Logan. Can wait to see uncle George series soon.
I love that people are finding the old cars and running them again. I used to love to watch the races at "The Rock". Yes, the sound of 63 going around the track was awesome. You have got to get one of those so we can hear you running around the track from INSIDE the cockpit.
I was fortunate enough to spot a couple of ARCA races at that track before it was closed a few years ago. It's nice to see that it's coming back to life. If you ever drive that track just watch it coming out of turn two it can get hairy really quick.
My dad was the chief pit steward at two local tracks back in the 70's 80's and early 90's. What gave me goosebumps is you guys talking about them. Daddy passed away last year at 91.
I gotta say, love the old school cars 90 80 70s super love this content man no one else really does this man i love the Daytona and the Lumina.........would also love to see more 72 petty charger...... love the old Mopar stock cars so much as well as the Pontiacs and Chevy's. This would be killer to see in person P.S. you literally have my most favorite content since i found you on TH-cam
At 21: 37 the picture that you have posted starting in my tent DayZ into my RV camping days that was kodak's designated spot in which my uncle work for over 8 years I saw that part of the track every year. the best place to get pictures of the wrecks my very first race I went to was there in 1982. It's almost tear-jerking to see videos like this and people talk about how old stuff is and I can remember when it was new makes me feel really really young LOL😪😭😏🎥
Soooo awesome. The old cars from the 90s sound soo much better than the current cars .Would be a great stress burner on the weekends having one of those and just having fun
Born in 91 here in nc this kinda stuff just gets the blood pumpin! Love this content finally getting time to watch again so commenting to help the algorithm bud! Also I definitely would like to hear the custom grind cam and switching the coils around.
Also Curtis Markham drove the 63 the next year and he is from my hometown in my home state of Virginia. Curtis has also spotted for Denny Hamlin and was the shop foreman at JGR.
I'm a tad bit older than you and a couple years ago I was able to get to Watkins Glen to see the vintage Transam cars. Those are the cars I grew up with and really loved them. I was like a teenager again seeing the vintage Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs up close and personal and watching them drive on the track. I even got to see Vic Elderbrock casually drive by I think in a 69 Camaro. It was so freaking amazing to see cars I'd only seen in magazines. What does that have to do with what you saw? I had no idea about these vintage NASCAR's vintage cars around by people. I think it would be such a cool event to see. As well I enjoyed the whole video like with the stuff that was from the original cars underneath everything else. Some of the drivers I talked to at the transam cars showed me some the original frames and the marks on there after they were safety inspected for the races back then. Keep up the good work of letting us see all these little almost lost jewels of racing history
I'd wished they'd put lights at Rockingham and I feel bummed that the CARS Late Model Tour is not coming to town this Calendar 2021. I'd like to see conceptually, a la Steve Torrence's Swamp Rat Tribute, the Midnight MGD Pontiac Grand Prix with the Early 1990's Paint w/ a 1996 Wide Track Body or Chuck Bown's Nescafe Pontiac with the same car or even make a Pontiac Paint with a Camaro Body and Rebadge it as a Firebird. I'd get a kick out of a Real Life Concept Series in the future.
Man, I wish someone had brought an old Thunderbird! A lot of my favorite drivers of all time drove a Thunderbird at least once (Bill Elliott, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Alan Kulwicki come to mind) but I'm too young to have seen the NASCAR Thunderbirds back when they were running. I actually used to own a 1995 V8 Thunderbird too so I've got that extra attachment.
I can’t thank you enough for uploading this video. Like you, I want an old school Lumina Nascar. Getting those up close shots, and those details, man I can’t thank you enough. I’m going to look at your merch!
Just watching you drive up brought back a ton of memories. My old man and I were there in 2001 at the first race after Earnhardt died... definitely a somber weekend I'll never forget.
Man this Is premium content. Amazing video!!!!!! I've been to rockingham 5 times before its demise in nascar. And seeing that lumina as is brought me back to my childhood. I'll say it again amazing video guys thank you.
Man I would love to be apart of that man I know the feeling that ye is talking about rolling up the doors and sun coming up I got same feeling at alanta motor speedway my first time ever turning laps there in a real car crazzy just even testing thinking of all the drivers who inspired me have all raced there. You need to get you a current asphalt racecar and go race the snowball derby in December at five flags speedway and get the experience of actually driving and racing in a real oval race instead of classic racing like this is cool and awsome but getting in a modern car and going wide open in competition completely different man you living the dream right now
Great video! Loved seeing the 80s and 90s cars. I would not change the engine on that Miller car, it sounds perfect. Please do the smallblock firing order experiment!
An ls with old school firing order would be the shit definitely be a market for it. But being down there in nascar land is my dream for retirement I'll get there but right now I'm jealous LOL
Great to see good Rockingham being used for something. I personally was at the last Cup race, Also went to the Buck Baker driving school when it was offered there . Great times
Nothing like a Cup car rowing thru the gears up threw the S turns at Watkins Glen International. I live 20 miles from there and Have not missed a race since 1992. Mark Martin use to own that place.
Dude. This stuff is so freaking cool to see, and I bet to experience it like you did is even better. Definitely enjoy this history type content - and I'm sure being in North Carolina you've got a lot to discover.
Years ago our local Matco dealer had it set up where we could buy laps to drive or ride some of the dummy cars for a “nascar experience”, i bought myself 10 driving laps and my parents 5 ride along laps. The cars all had the same drivetrain just different bodies, i was lucky enough to get the car with the rear diff that could be heard from the outside parking lot when we got there. Still was a blast to drive a vehicle that resembled a cup car, all the shaking rattling and banging noises i can still hear it at night lol..
Yes, yes would very much like to see you change the firing order in an LS. Should talk Blueprint into grinding one if they do such a thing. Not because they're local to me or anything like that, not at all lol.
Man I love the history I grew up watching them in the 90's adn early 2000's here in Australia we only had the NASCAR for a limited time but never missed a race. Awesome content man keeping the history alive.
There is a ton to like in this video, I hope that dog is ok. I love seeing those older race cars out and about, especially in a place where they belong. Would be awesome to make it to Rockingham at some point.

Man that’s awesome. I need to meet some of the track management people and check out the press box and stuff
@@Stapleton42 Jamie is the guy to talk to. He is in charge of ALL the grounds and maintenance at The Rock. I have his number, if you like I will try and get up with him after he is done with work tomorrow. I'll see what I can do to introduce the two of you. He is into "the old days of racing" also. You mentioned the Winston billboard in the video and that is one of the very first things we talked about when I meet him. Doing a nostalgia deal like Darlington.
@@ernestpaul2484 email me his info mdstapleton42@gmail.com
Man that’s wild
I was @ that race. About froze, only race I ever attended when I only had two beers. ha ha
I was asked/told to leave, too, many times. "Grandstands?" I thought it was "SansPantsstands", for years. We were Born, Naked........
This is badass. That vintage stock car group sounds awesome.
It is awesome, I know first hand 😄
I totally agree. This just sounds amazing. Maybe it's time to relocate. 😆
That Hensley car is cool i worked for them in 2001 and 2002 great local small town team in horsepasture va
So right
He said that number 27 Genuine Draft car was owned by Raymond Beadle Blue Max racing.
It’s possible I’d say 🤷🏻♂️
Raymond beetle was a wild man .he loved wild women lots of beer an bad ass cars he was the man.
You're damn right he was! 🤘
That's really cool! Were family friends with Thomas's dad. Glad to see he's doing well
That poor dog this just made me love u guys even more for trying to help the poor thing much respect guys
Thanks man. Bonus footage crew 💪🏻
Didn’t talk to you much but was there with Thomas in the 63 yesterday good running into you, hope to see you more in the future!
You will!
@@Stapleton42 good deal!
Truck series needs to come back to this track.
The cup series needs to come back and race here!!!
Steward needs to get the SRX Series there
You got your wish. Trucks will be back in ‘25
Sounds that track ain't heard in years.
That’s awesome man 🤟🏻
I found your channel a few days ago and I can't stop watching your Nascar videos.
Thanks man. I do my best
Yes try it out! I see ls people do the cylinder swap with the firing order. I have seen it done for more horsepower but no one ever dose a sound or throttle response test.
Love the sound of the old school stock cars, thanks for sharing
Glad you’re here man
I remember I loved watching the cup races there as a teenager in the nineties, always loved watching Dale bulldozing through the field on the shorter tracks like this :)
Just seeing and hearing these cars on the track, i dont think i have stopped smiling since i heard that first car as they came out of that tunnel. man i feel like i kid again watching nascar and hearing the cars in the background while the reporters did interviews during the races.
Feeling like a kid again is what it’s all about
You guys rock for trying to help the doggie!!! Keep up the awesome content and cant wait to see your builds actually get finished and used again!!!!
thanks man!!
Gawd I miss old nascar Winston Cup and Busch Grand National Racing
Thanks for sharing this video!
So glad you made the move! I really dig your passion for the history. It only happens once.
Thanks man you’re right
This whole thing made me fall back into the 90s!
Thanks dude we appreciate your support! Hope you like the Merch 🤟🏻
It is so much fun exploring that place!! Im so glad the new owners are doing stuff with that track again. It was so sad seeing it rot away.
Lots of great memories at this track, last time I was there was 2002, thanks for sharing 👍
I dig the old tracks and the acoustic sounds that they produced. I so got goosebumps hearing the roar of the exhaust from the old cars against the front stretch walls😊😊😊
Graduated 07/92 this is when NASCAR blew me away, we built RC10 Carpet cars with all livery we could paint up thanx bro for the great memories
The TH-cam algorithm finally got it right. Your channel showed up on my feed and I have found quite possibly the best channel on TH-cam. Keep up the good work. Now how can a guy get his hands on the retro goodwrench shirt? 😁
Heck yeah man I’m glad you’re here! Check out stapletonautoworks.com for all the Merch. If we don’t have your size in the goodwrench one we do have the hats 🤟🏻
@@Stapleton42 heading over right now. Thanks brother!
My first time there was 1999, you are bringing back so many memories. Can you just imagine 44 cars on track? The noise was deafening on pit road during race day.
I've been to michigan many times growing up and I miss that feeling when they all go by in a pack
Love the old school nascar sounds. Your videos kick ass and always the boom. Keep up the good work. Also hi to the doggo and Logan. Can wait to see uncle George series soon.
absolutely love the video, bro... I went to my first NASCAR race in '86 definitely bringin back all the feels
I absolutely love Rockingham! My first Cup race was at Rockingham in 87 when I was 12. Great memories!!
I love that people are finding the old cars and running them again. I used to love to watch the races at "The Rock". Yes, the sound of 63 going around the track was awesome. You have got to get one of those so we can hear you running around the track from INSIDE the cockpit.
its gonna happen!
Super cool seeing these old tracks coming back.
awesome to see this track active again loved this track going to NASCAR races when i was younger
I gotta say, love the old school cars 90 80 70s super love this content man no one else really does this man i love the Daytona and the Lumina.........would also love to see more 72 petty charger...... love the old Mopar stock cars so much as well as the Pontiacs and Chevy's. This would be killer to see in person
P.S. you literally have my most favorite content since i found you on TH-cam
Petty charger videos resume shortly!
You’re right, the Lumina is hands down one of the, if not the best and baddest looking stock car of all time.
Damn man. That’s awesome
This is great stuff! Thanks Mike and special thanks to Tom Hensley for connecting the dots. You guys made my day!
Soooo awesome. The old cars from the 90s sound soo much better than the current cars .Would be a great stress burner on the weekends having one of those and just having fun
I love the cars from the 80's and early 90's, and the history in that garage is incredible.
Born in 91 here in nc this kinda stuff just gets the blood pumpin! Love this content finally getting time to watch again so commenting to help the algorithm bud! Also I definitely would like to hear the custom grind cam and switching the coils around.
Just hope we can see the track back on the schedule again someday soon
Enjoyed this a ton! Thank you for doing what you do, I've watched 4 of your vids already
Good stuff guys, love that 2001 winners circle with Steve Park #1 Pennzoil car!!! That helped a lot of grieving people with that win!!!!
Gives me chills to think about
So awesome. I'm a diehard nascar fan. So cool to see all these cars from different era's. My favorite car there is the Daytona Charger
Also Curtis Markham drove the 63 the next year and he is from my hometown in my home state of Virginia. Curtis has also spotted for Denny Hamlin and was the shop foreman at JGR.
Yes! Awesome seeing Rockingham! You absolutely have to get one!! So we can all live our dreams through you!
Another awesome cut brother. Love the way you and Logan mix so well. Keep on grinding
More of this! Only thing cooler to me is an old school Kinser 410 sprint car. The late 80's and 90's was where my passion started
My dad owns Steve Kinser's green L.E.D. 11 Quaker state sprint car sign that used to hang up in his trailer when he was first starting out
Epic video!!! I found out about this group(Stock Car Classics) on Facebook and it's really cool to see what they're doing
Awesome sounds! Nothing can replace it!! 👍🏁🏆🔥🔥🔥
I can’t thank you enough for uploading this video. Like you, I want an old school Lumina Nascar. Getting those up close shots, and those details, man I can’t thank you enough. I’m going to look at your merch!
Thanks Jason!! We appreciate you!
That's awesome you guys are trying to help that puppy, I always try to help animals out and I stop and get turtles out of the road 😀
omg come on payday .... getting that western auto shirt!
When they quit coming here....
It was almost strangely symbolic of NASCAR's fall into oblivion. ☹️
Just watching you drive up brought back a ton of memories. My old man and I were there in 2001 at the first race after Earnhardt died... definitely a somber weekend I'll never forget.
Oh man this is gonna be so awesome!!! I’m always excited to see what you are up to next!
Man this Is premium content. Amazing video!!!!!! I've been to rockingham 5 times before its demise in nascar. And seeing that lumina as is brought me back to my childhood. I'll say it again amazing video guys thank you.
Glad you’re here man
Man I would love to be apart of that man I know the feeling that ye is talking about rolling up the doors and sun coming up I got same feeling at alanta motor speedway my first time ever turning laps there in a real car crazzy just even testing thinking of all the drivers who inspired me have all raced there. You need to get you a current asphalt racecar and go race the snowball derby in December at five flags speedway and get the experience of actually driving and racing in a real oval race instead of classic racing like this is cool and awsome but getting in a modern car and going wide open in competition completely different man you living the dream right now
It’s insane. Great feeling being there
Great video! Loved seeing the 80s and 90s cars. I would not change the engine on that Miller car, it sounds perfect.
Please do the smallblock firing order experiment!
Every car that goes around rockingham gives me goosebumps it echos everywhere
You had the hair on the back of my neck standing up a few times. Awesome video.
Can’t say I’ve been going as long, but I’ve been going to Watkins Glen every year since 09.
I LOVE the username!
there really isn't anything like the sound of those old cup cars they just had that growl in the engine that made it sound so good. great video man
Dude. This stuff is so freaking cool to see, and I bet to experience it like you did is even better. Definitely enjoy this history type content - and I'm sure being in North Carolina you've got a lot to discover.
That’s why we moved here! Every day is an adventure
Awesome man, enjoy it.
You guys are living The dream man I love it keep it going.
