Diesel Kart is a Wheelie Machine! | Performance Mods, Tractor Flap, Doughnuts, Wheelies!

  • We attempt to do diesel performance modifications on our 411cc diesel go kart, but everything we look at on the engine has some kind of factory defect! We have: a gap in the intake where the engine can suck dirty air in, an oil leak, an exhaust leak, the whole setup with the torque conveter weighs 130 pounds, and all kinds of red flags with the flywheel. The casting on the flywheel is very poor, after just an hour of run time, we have a broken fin on the flywheel, and we noticed air pockets in the casting, meaning that this diesel engine's flywheel could break apart at high or moderate RPM. We still have fun doing go kart wheelies and doughnuts!

      If I duplicate the iron flywheel in aluminum 1:1 it will still be pretty heavy compared to what you’d use on a gas engine, and will keep the engine’s power pulses smooth enough, but it’ll be half the weight, so it’ll rev from 0-3800 in 2/3 the time. Still need to get a lighter primary spring, maybe even lower weights, on the primary clutch to get it to start hooking up at closer to 1100 instead of 2500 haha.

      It definitely needs a higher quality flywheel though. Aluminum is just the next lighter, next stronger option. With as porous as that casting is, I wouldn’t want to stand next to it running anything over idle. You’ll likely not lose significant amounts of mass by switching to solid aluminum, but you’ll get a far more homogenous and solid metal than that pot metal claymore

    You NEED a heavy flywheel to help compress the air in the compression stroke.

    • @tommylyeah
      @tommylyeah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not that heavy on that small of an engine.

    • @greywuuf
      @greywuuf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I bet you will actually be happier with a heavier one than a lighter one ...diesels are about low RPM tq. Leave the heavy flywheel and reliable idle, work with the engagement on the variable drive clutch and gearing. Also find a reasonable project for that .....put a hydrostatic pump on it and do an all wheel drive or track driven crawler.......

    • @dieselgeezer18
      @dieselgeezer18 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats wrong. A heavy flywheel is used in diesels to help them run smoothly at low RPM. Has nothing to do with helping with compression

      The flywheel on it is already literal crap as they said, so it technically needs to go before it quite literally explodes because of too much RPM on it.

    • @gallupcustomknives2293
      @gallupcustomknives2293 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What does the charging system have to do with the weight of the flywheel? If I were to reproduce the flywheel in aluminum I would retain the factory rotor. But as stated by Timtee, the original casting is junk, with as porous as the machined surface is I’d be afraid to stand near that thing at anything over idle.

      These engines are VERY over square for a diesel, around 1.2 bore/stroke ratio. That along with their high compression lets them make decent power at higher revs. Some performance diesels can make peak power around 5k and rev even higher yet. There's a de-stroked duramax drag truck that revs to 8k

      @@NellisNelson not entirely true the valves seals can do it as well as the piston rings if you tip it to to extreme of an angle it may not drain the oil back from the valve cover causing it to pool around the valve seals leaking oil into the air intake causing the runaway (Volkswagen 1.5l,1.6l engines would run away this way (yes na engines) the fix was a baffle placed in the valve cover to redirect the oil to the drain holes) and the rings could leak oil past if tilted too far
