Now here's the thing. In the graphic novels there were different crows other than Eric Draven that not only had different face paint but also different abilities. This crow here healing slower and feeling the pain plus the different look would make way more sense if they set it up as a whole new story. And I believe people would be open to it more, but the fact they made it "Eric Draven" Crow just messes up all that.

In the graphic novel, there was no race against time to save Shelly. She is dead, it was tragic and Eric is very distraught and traumatized from it. He’s brought back to get the bad guys. The story is simple, to the point, sweet and sad. You root for Eric because he and Shelly were good people in a corrupt city. Am I supposed to root for a couple crackheads in this new one? @@hun34rd27 If she did something to deserve hell, The Crow wouldn't resurrect Eric. The point is that her death was a pure tragedy. They make her very innocent in the graphic novel and 1994 movie. She dies in the movie because she's trying to organize the fellow tenants in their building against the slumlord that owns the building and kept it a hovel. If she got killed because her criminal past caught up with her (which being damned to hell implies she was a criminal) the guardian Crow would not see her as worthy of avenging.

The idea that Draven's wounds take longer to heal and that he feels more pain is misguided. Part of the point of his resurrection is that all other pain and even fatal wounds PALE in comparison to the deep sorrow over what was done to him and his wife-to-be.
It's how he kills Top Dollar at the end of the movie! "30 hours of pain!" The utter anguish of Shelley's rape and murder, combined with the sheer heartbreak of having to watch it and having no power to stop it...not even death can match it. That's why the Crow is such a force to be reckoned with, and is part of the overall message of the film, I think: there is no pain like loss, and death pales in comparison to the evil that men do.
Also there's a joy in seeing that nothing the evildoers do even phases Eric. He's going to get justice. He laughs at their evil ways and their weapons. Literally. Nearly all of the best moments of the film come from the fact that he cannot be stopped. Nothing these thugs do can harm him anymore (at least not until the end).
Also why get rid of the actual crow and make Eric go it alone? One of the beautiful things about the OG film and Brandon Lee's performance is that when he's resurrected, he's a MESS. He has no idea how or why he came back, and is still essentially mad with grief over Shelley's death. The actual crow leads him on his path, and through Eric's new power of psychometry (touching things and reading memories/feelings from them), he begins to see his purpose. From there, the crow is not only his guide, but acts as another set of eyes, which was always a neat little extra superpower for the character I thought. It also acts as Eric's link to the land of the living, and becomes his Achilles Heel at the end of the film.
But instead we just get rid of all that. For what? Given the trailer and your description of what the filmmakers are aiming for, I don't think it was a fair trade. I think they just ditched the crow element so they could jam in their own half-baked ideas.
Like making the thugs interchangeable goons and the villain an evil businessman. Top Dollar was a real sicko, and had a malevolent charm to him. His half-sister concubine was a sicko too, and Tony Todd's character was a real pro. T-Bird, and each member of his crew had their own personalities. Fun Boy, Tin Tin, Skank? I remember all of these characters. Taking shots with actual fucking bullets? "FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP!" C'mon, that shit was great. You loved to hate these characters, and they helped denote just how fallen their city had become.
And let's not forget the two supporting characters in Officer Albrecht and the girl, Sarah. They were the lights in the darkness, both for the city, the audience and Eric himself. Some of the last good people who cared in that fucked up world. But God forbid we have a police officer who cares and is BLACK, right? Can't help but feel like there's a convenient political discretion going on there...
Don't even get me started on the soundtrack. But then, most popular music is utter garbage today, even among what passes for the Goth culture today. So we were never going to win on that front.
This just seems like the shitty CW version of the Crow, and I spit on it. Looks like an utter disgrace of a film and a shadow of what came before. If you're going to change things or ditch them, you better make DAMN SURE what you go with instead is as good, or are at least earnest attempts to create something new. This just seems like more of the same sludge we've seen.

‘The Crow’ was one of those films in set in this weird alt-90’s, sort of fantasy looking cities. I’m talking about ‘Se7en’, ‘Dark City’ (yeah I know, same director), ‘Flatliners’ hell even the ‘Spawn’ film.

Eric and Shelly met when she was taking photos of his band.

I havent finished your reaction yet, J, but I just wanted to say seeing this pop up in my feed this morning made my heart sink.
The original film is a classic cult movie with a tragic production history, and it's based on a series that was made by a broken man struggling against all odds to cope with an even more tragic loss of his own. James O'Barr lost his fiancee to a hit-and-run car accident and his life was thrown into misery and despair that, too my knowledge, he never quite recovered from. He made the Crow comics as a means to vent his anger, sorrow, and regret at a world that took his love and light away, seemingly for no reason at all. The series went on to host multiple writers and creators, each telling their own story within the mythos of the Crow, and has been a staple of alt/indie underground comics ever since, and a genuine monument to the pain of loss and the fight for justice and catharsis we all face.
This is an insult to everyone who put their lives towards capturing those stories, and I refuse to see it or give it the attention it so brazenly demands. Watch the original, read the comics, and don't give hollywood what it wants.

It’s the movie that literally got Brandon Lee killed and a lot of people take that seriously to this day. Even the director of the original didn’t want to accept payment for the film after Brandon’s death because he said “It feels like blood money”. This isn’t a case of “maybe we shouldn’t”. It’s a case of “don’t you dare do it”! Even if this was the perfect movie it wouldnt work. This………? It’s an insult to a cult classic and the literal sacrifice made by Brandon Lee as well as the heartfelt tribute to his memory by the director to finish the film in the man’s honor!

I did read the graphic novels, several of them actually. In the original with Eric and Shelly, the villains didn't have supernatural powers. They were a group of thugs who randomly attacked Eric and Shelly who was trying to fix their car after it stalled on the side of the road. That's all they were, a gang of thugs in a random act of violence against two innocent people just minding their own business. You should check out the original graphic novel by James O'Barr, it's a fantastic book.
"He doesn't have the confidence or physical prowess to take his revenge easily." Neither did the original. Eric was a literal dead man walking with a tormented soul. Being shot at and stabbed didn't bother him because he was literally DEAD!
"He doesn't have the crow as a companion, the birds don't guide him." ......oh lord what the fuck they doing? I hate this.

3:40 No. That's not the thing. The villains in the comics don't have supernatural powers. The two main villains in the original movie were into the occult, but they weren't supernatural.
6:41 He felt pain in the original as well.
7:16 And in the original, it took him a year to come back. This added a lot to the story. It gave his friend's time to grieve his loss and his enemies enough time to get comfortable. So when he comes back it's an especially big deal for the people who loved him. And it gives a slow burn tension for the enemies as they slowly remembering what happened a year ago and why he's back for revenge.
18:29 The Crow City of Angels is probably the most frustrating film in the franchise for me because it had the most potential out of all the sequels. It was trying to do its own thing and it even originally had a wildly different ending. And they specifically did it that way so fans wouldn't think it's trying to take the place of the original.
But one of The Producers on the movie decided that it needs to be more like the original, so he ordered rewrites and reshoots. And so the film ended up as a mess. And that producer's name was Harvey Weinstein. I reckon that's the second worst thing he's ever done.
19:33 The city's name is Detroit.
20:10 Then what the hell is the point?! They just decided that one of the core fundamental aspects of the story isn't important enough for their movie! If they didn't want to make a Crow movie then why did they make a Crow movie?!

It really feels like they saw Dante in DMC and wanted that as their hero design. The dialog and story seem to be on the same level too but that game at least had the fact that the gameplay was fun to give it a redeeming feature. This movie is probably going to be one of the biggest bombs of the year.

Brandon Lee is Eric Draven/The Crow is a masterclass of filmmaking and this remake is DOA after we heard the "modern audience" bit.
Also J when are you going to do a review video with SinglePlayerCarl, Mauler on the American Society of Magical Negros? Because that would be comedy gold right there.

I can't remember where I heard this but I remember someone a while back say how it was really nice how in the 90s film adaptation, there was no underworld or spiritual plane Eric goes to to get his briefing. He just slowly and naturally pieces together why he's back in the land of the living and who he has to drop to find peace again and go back tot the afterlife with his girlfriend. So why do these people suddenly feel that for this version they need to undo that and have Eric be told what he has to do?

    • @PaceBreaker
      @PaceBreaker 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Maybe the people behind the movie think that the modern audience is too slow to follow Eric piece it together. Everything has to be told so the people on their phones get it too.

One thing I love about the 1st Crow was that even the villains had enough screen time to know something about them. Even though Tin Tin is the 1st to die, I got the sense that he was a thief. Obviously, he loved knives. But he stole and sold the goods to Gideon. And the banter, the exchange between them indicated that they've known each other for some time.
Gideon and his pawn shop are in connection with T-Bird and his group.
[Eric tosses rings at Gideon] "Each one of these is a life you helped destroy."
It's a perfect example of Less is More.

    I hate everything about this.
To the people saying this is like the comic - never read it.
And no - in the 1994 one we didnt need any back story for their love story, the flashbacks were enough. You understood what was going on without having to see it all play out from start to end.
Every single bad guy in the 1994 one - had personality and were memorable
The scene with guy in the car - was the one that really made me mad. The scene from 1994 one - T Bird was legit terrified and you felt every ounce of that performance - the exchange between him and Eric not saying a word was perfect. That guy in the trailer is like he's chatting with a bud.
Call them anything but Eric and Shelly and I wouldnt be mad, it'd just be ok look its another crappy sequel but it might be fun if drunk. This -hell no. This is not my Crow. I got my Crow comin for Anniversary special edition in May.
There's other Crows from the comics they could have taken and made into a movie. Leave Eric and Shelly's story alone - that's Brandon Lee's legacy.
Like its one of the first movies I know I wont even go see in theaters, because I would walk out or end up yelling at the screen.
I cant wait to see how bad it backfires and how bad it does.
I would have rather had them had the Mamoa version and done that. At least they made him look like The Crow. He's probably a true fan and when they wanted to do some shit he didnt agree with, he noped the fuck out.

    • @nightmarefanatic1819
      @nightmarefanatic1819 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

I read it and this looks even farther removed from the comic than the original. The original movie was basically the same plot with some changes (Top Dollar and Albrecht were minor characters and T-Bird was the big bad) but it was basically the same story with some stuff added.
This doesn't look anything like the comic period.
And I agree, I would rather a (well made) adaptation of another story instead of remaking the only good Crow movie.

  • @tabithaprovan957

There was not a supernatural villain in the original comic, no.
The original movie crafted a main villain (Top Dollar) who had some semblance of spiritual connection via his half sister, which i felt lent the story a more robust cinematic structure, but overall the original film was pretty darn faithful --the changes were in service of the story.
I really think they should have made this movie about *a* crow, not the original, Eric Draven.
The crow has empowered multiple individuals--this new movie could have given itself a clean slate in this regard and been judged as it's own story.

If they absolutely had to do a The Crow remake, wanna know what direction I would take Eric's design?
    Full on corpse paint.
Just leaning all the way in to the Black Metal scene. The lead singer from Advent Sorrow is a good example of what a 2024 Eric could have looked like. You get your tattoos, you get your long hair and you get the face paint, but everything is more raw and ragged.
The way the leadsinger looks in "Pestilence Shall Come" is near perfect for me: th-cam.com/video/kgijKmkw-v8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AG17P7Z-Oew1frIW
Hell, why not have Eric actually be a rotting corpse while he's taking his revenge? I dunno. Just ... ANYTHING is better than this bs

Either that, or I'd say a good idea would be to give him a makeup job like they did Vincent Price for MadHouse. More so skull like and less clown. Or the lead singer of Ghost? Anything would be better than what we got.
The corpse idea is good, but now that just makes me want a high budget adaptation of Johnny Gruesome, which is about a walking corpse getting his revenge, albeit less metaphor on grief and more unapologetic slasher.
