Laura has gradually become one of my favourite artists since hearing Song for Our Daughter in 2020 (btw TOTALLY get what you said about the pandemic effect regarding that album). There's not a lot of attention given to folk artists in the current mediascape, and so it's small comfort that one of the more prominent folk artists is so consistently insightful with her music. Listening to Laura's albums in succession really lets you watch an artist grow up, and because the songwriting is so naked, so much on display, you can't help but put yourself in her position. You get to experience the growth she's experienced, an aspect of her music that's made the last couple albums so damn emotional. She's the only artist who's ever made me confront my own feelings on having children, specifically because it's clear she's gotten so much unexpected joy from it (that's not me reading into the album too much btw, she has a really excellent substack where she's been writing about her process and various other things). That sense of entering into a really daunting period of your life, and being overcome with joy when you were expecting the worst, is just so... ugh. Interesting how much Paul you see on this track, thought it was giving Nick Drake, or even Jackson C. Frank, more than it was Paul. Leonard Cohen is all over Shadows, and I think I agree; I hadn't realised how dramatic that track was until watching this. I guess the interlude makes more sense if you've heard Lump, feels like it has its roots in the sound she designed with Mike Lindsay for that project. Loved the review!
This album feels like Pink Moon meets early Leonard Cohen to me. I guess that's why I connected with it immediately. Also hear some hints of Sibylle Baier in the naked intimacy of this album's production.
@@coffeejoshy Apparently, Laura pushed forward the release of SFOD to April 2020 (it was due to be released in August) to give something to people during the pandemic
I love how in "Patterns In Repeat" the process of looking back also extents to the music, as she brings back the cello melody from 2013s "Breathe" near the end.
In her tour of this album (which is about only 8 shows, 4 in London and 4 in NY if i’m correct) , i saw her yesterday performing at a church and she opened by playing the opening 4 songs from Once I was an Eagle, ending in breathe, then finished by playing patterns in repeat, kind of proving to the audience the full circle she’s come. She also played the entirety of patterns in repeat live as well as several songs from SFOD and other bits from semper femina and short movie. The best concert i’ve ever been to
I adored this album and was lucky enough to see her last week with the addition of strings. I appreciate how there is a lot of Cohen in this album, specifically in Caroline. Also, I really love the fact that Looking Back is written by her father and I love that she calls back the guitar on Once I Was An Eagle. She always manages to be so down to earth and genuine.
Yeah lmao those accusations are insane. He literally reveres Charli and Bjork and Fiona and numerous other female artists, but he gives Lana's Ultraviolence and Halsey's The Great Impersonator negative reviews and all of a sudden he hates women? That's twitter all over for you, I think he really should come off it, I don't think it's worth engaging with people so unintelligent.
@ConnorThompson-w2k It's not the score necessarily, it's the way he talked about Halsey's themes and accused her of having "main character syndrome" when the album was written about her experience with cancer and other struggles she's gone through
@@ConnorThompson-w2k the criticism about the halsey review has little to do with the number at the end of the review. people are definitely saying a 1 is harsh, but the criticism is mostly about him saying she has "main character syndrome" and suggesting halsey's emotions on the album are infantile despite being about some of the most difficult and traumatic things any person can go through. but yeah the people you disagree with are probably just unintelligent and ignorant, no shot they have a point of view worth considering. lol.
Lmao, I bet an “Honest Fantano Reviews” channel could be hilarious. “Honestly, I’ve been thinking a lot about my ex-wife fucking a bunch of dudes, so for this ice spice album - I’m feeling a rock hard 3.”
Thank you! Great review! I have been a massive fan of Laura Marling since "I Speak Because I Can" (2010). I love the new album! My favourite track is the very beautiful and clever, "Caroline". I also really love "Patterns" which has hints of Nick Drake in Laura's guitar playing.
I thought this review was going to go a completely different way after the intro but I'm very happy to be surprised. I have the cd of this making it's way to me right now so I'm very much looking forward to being able to give it a proper listen when it eventually reaches me.
listen to Roland faunte!!! please please please! A review of all his albums would be amazing, they all bring something beautiful and unique to the world of music
Hey Anthony, you described Laura's song "No one's gonna love you like I can" as "jaw droppingly gorgeous". The last time my jaw dropped was actually exactly one week later, when I was listening to "Smoke Bath" from the new album "Cloth" by Roland Faunte. As the whole album is a lyrical masterpiece packed with emotions, I'm sure your jaw would drop as well if you gave it a listen. So if you're looking for a new album to review, this one offers 16 amazing tracks, waiting to be analyzed by your expertise!! :)
Big fan of this album actually. An artist I’m a really big fan of just released an album called Cloth and was hoping maybe you’d make a review. Cloth by Roland Faunte.
You should listen to and review ‘Cloth’ by Roland Faunte! He’s a super talented artist who makes super cool music. Definitely worth a listen! 10/10 recommend!!
Would be remiss if no one pointed out the last moments of the song Patterns in Repeat is an echo of the last moments of the four song suite that opens I Was an Eagle, her expansive guitar-only 2013 album. The chord progression and melody are reworked from Breathe. As a long term fan, hearing the guitar tip into that decade old motif was almost ecstatic, I think it's a beautiful way to cap off a decade of stellar work and I'm also afraid she'll never write another album because it ties things up SO neatly. Anyway, just here to defend the ending because I think it rules and it made me think about how much *I've* changed over the course of her last four albums. Also I cried :')
OMG! I love Laura Marling! So freaking much! But you know who also i love? Roland Faunte! It’s a great artist with a lot of deep, he come out with a thoughtful album! Please make a review out of his music! It’s a complete peace 🥹✨
Hi! Please do a review of Roland Faunte’s new album, Cloth! The themes you’re speaking about in this review are the exact ones Roland Faunte has in his, especially the “stillness and serenity” you mentioned! I know you’d do it justice ❤
I've listened to Laura marling for just over a decade, and her albums always resonate with me more years after their release. She is honestly a timeless musician
The album is totally deserving of a 9. Absolutely top tier Marling album. She has never sounded more at ease. Gorgeous album. I have this album, and I love it. I've been a fan of Laura Marling for a long time and am constantly impressed as well as moved by her music. To be honest, I wasn't so much into her Lump project, so I was thrilled to see this solo record drop.
I've been a long time Laura Marling fan. I think in part because she's my age so her musical progression has always suited me very well in a way very few other artists are. And I'm enjoying this new era, just the same as I've ever did, it suits my current life just as well as any previous Marling record has. But, that being said, I don't think this new album is better than her previous one and I'm kind of sad we're never going to get another "Short Movie" which is my favourite of hers. But yeah, I dig this. Great album.
