How should I improve this orchestration?

  • Prelude No. 20 in A Minor for Orchestra - Yoav Shati (2023)
I started this orchestration with a very clear idea of what I wanted to do - the original version has repeats so this version will have different orchestrations for the repeats, and my first thought was to put the strings and winds in contrast with each other until the last section where they combine a bit more. I think it's a pretty good idea but maybe not implemented as well as it could be, unfortunately
The original context of this orchestration was as the third movement of four in a suite, with the one before it being quite intense (based on prelude no.2) and the one after it being more conclusive (based on prelude no.21). I think that that context makes this piece work better as a short break before the finale

Basically I'd say check for any weird clashes between notes in different parts, just to smoothen things out. Secondly, I'd say, especially during the first section, make the melody distinct, there seems to be a lot of countermelodies and passing round the orchestra, which is great, when done well. You've nailed the rhythmic undertones of the accompaniment, which really boosts the energy of the music (if that's what you were going for), but I'd say double it up in places, or harmonise it above, so the rhythmic 'ostinatos' aren't just in one instrument. But there's a lot of really interesting melodic and harmonic ideas in here, loving it! A sub from me!

Thank you! I'll definitely go back to this comment if I ever revise this orchestration (or just in general with orchestral pieces)

@@yoavshati You're very welcome! I'm only fifteen, but I'd say I'm a decent composer, so lemme know if you have any other queries!

I think I didn't use it because I wanted it to be very light, but that could work
