LOOK MUM NO ORGAN TEE's Are Available Here store.lookmumnocomputer.com/collections/merch
There has been comments about my statement on keeping it original is inconsistent with what i've done with the electronics and the LED's. i just want to say i disagree. I dont think its inconsistent. the console is even rewired to be modern electronics. The rats nest of wiring from the 70's has been removed yes. But its more a statement about the console which is the main interface device, and keeping that original, warts and all. this is the part that people touched and used. it holds the story thats why it would be horrid to revamp it. This project is not about keeping it original but building on the machine but keeping true to its story.
Also the comments about the blower running out of air in the store cupboard are vastly over estimating its ability to try and make a vacuum chamber! Besides the cupboard is relatively large and has a false ceiling. Getting air is the least of its worries.
Great Job! For the blower maybe check if you "just" need to change the bearings
@@tesicnr its probable! but im hoping to have a spare so if i take it apart and it needs a lot of work the organ isn't indefinitely out of action if you catch me drift, since i have 1, i cant take it to pieces.
That art on the Tee looks great! Tee-shirt looked a bit on the baggy side but will see the actual fit when I get it 😀
@@bunker1213 nice! yeah drawn by me mate johnny goddard
Personally I would keep the blower as it is ( and of coure maintain it functioning ). I like the bzzz that makes when it's speeding up since from part 2 hahahah
I think it would be cool if the "organist that knows what they're doing" is Anna Lapwood. Me and probably a bunch of others here know her from the TH-cam algorithm recommending her repeatedly after you bought Joan's organ. Anna appears to play regularly in Royal Albert Hall and it would be smashing to hear her comparison on massive organ in a concert hall, vs smaller organ in a way too small room. Also it could be a fun mix with your modern bleep blop music vs Anna's more classical/movie soundtrack style.
yep ofcourse, i fired an email over recently. who knows lets see.
Yeah, let's hope she'll consider Sams small organ.
@@the_jcbone He said earlier that it is a "relatively small" organ, so who knows!!🤣
@@the_jcbone Yep, there just had to be a "Sam's organ" double entendre sometime.
YES
Even out of tune the organ sounds absolutely beautiful.
Agreed! Beautiful and organic.
Right??? They literally can't record actual pipe organs besides this one it's absolutely genius!!! And totally sets precident for home pipe organs!!!!
I AGREE!!! Its come a LONG WAY!!
Really love them wood pipes.
The wooden pipes sounded more in tune
Haven't seen anyone wire wrap a loom like that since my days in avionics repair! Not very many techs could make it look so smooth.
It didn't look that uniform when I started lacing a year ago haha: slowly getting neater
Definitely beats cable ties!
I've only recently found your channel. Everything from arduino sequencers to church organs.... The depth of your knowledge, talent, passion and your brilliant ability to convey knowledge blows me away. Your channel is an example of the best of what youtube can be. You're an effing star. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos.
To me he is one of the classic youtubers, so glad he managed to stay the same in a way. Production value went up but the contents stay interesting to me. Really a good guy who I will always be excited about what he comes up with next.
lovely put
Would look good with a stained glass effect panel in a LMNC theme in that bit over the keyboard. Would still be see through and in keeping with church organs roots.
actually thinking of making a backlit stained glass window on the wall!
Scaled down rose window FTW. Some blasphemous imagery involving electronics and synths
@@rikardottosson1272 Don't want to start any blasphemous rumours.
I like this idea 💜
Maybe something with a miniature caricature of the organ, or an ode to Joan
When do we get the full "I BOUGHT A CHURCH ORGAN" movie? Will it be at film festivals?
What an amazing transformation. Sometimes tucking the problem in the closet is just what you need. I can't wait to see who you get to collab with from the professional organist community.
Requesting Diana Bish.
Anna Lapwood!
This is the channel I never grow tired off. The attitude (positive and friendly), the playfulness, the inventiveness, the fun, the can do.
Thanks for spreading joy. To me this is the essence of music, the energy.
Thanks for showing us your huge organ again 👍
How has it taken me this long to realize your hymn board numbers are meme primes minus one?!
Keep up the great work, man!
Oh wow! I've always wondered whether they had any relevance, or if they were just random!!
I just saw that too lol
Thanks! I was going to ask what they meant.
I didn't even knew until now what this board with number was and thought I missed some inner joke from earlier episodes
Your perseverance on this project deserves recognition from your government 😊 thank you for sharing!
every new video of this saga just gets more and more glorious
I prefer stuff that looks its age. The perfectionists that return stuff to factory condition effectively destroy its history.
That's the one! Have You seen the vid of the vought Corsair at I think raf Hendon museum where they are painstakingly removed the paint that in the 70's was plonked on top of original worn paint to look new and shiny. Madness I say. Madness
Well said!
Functionality, but with originality, is the way to go.
I’m a church organist, and part of the enjoyment from visiting other instruments is experiencing first hand the history - often written in pencil on the inside of the pipe chest.
Thanks for saving this amazing piece of audio engineering.
I love the "not quite" numbers over the organ. Please never change them ;)
even with the tuning being worse the sound is still nicer imo without all the background noise the fan made. it's going to be really nice when you get all the little details fixed
In the end you might find you can sort the reservoir out so it can be moved closer to the pipes without getting too much noise (if you have a problem with air supply to the pipes). The organs I've seen all have the blower in a separate room because of the noise, but the reservoirs are usually in the pipe chambers with a really short run to the wind chests.
Yep. If when all pipes are running it's a problem I'll either put it closer or more wires. It's so close I don't think it's gunna be an issue
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER it was only an analogy. Tubes aren't actually wires, silly.
@@NOLAfugee language is language you know what I meant. Partially the fact I commit to practical as I am a jumble with words and you know what I meant.
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER you forgot for a moment that you're working as a plumber more than an electrician on this job. Keep up the good work.
Maybe a better solution is to go bigger, not more, with a wider pipe from the cupboard to the organ room. I'm sure flow rate charts are available somewhere on the internet.
Yes yes Sam, Vivaldi background music making this project even more epic
It was to be demolished with the church and Joan saved it, then you saved it. It'll never be perfect but it's alive. It doesn't matter how clean it is or isn't
Fabulous.
we need to hear @AnnaLapwoodOrgan play on this thing when it's done!
**chef kiss
perfect Sunday watching
I spend too much time on TH-cam but this is one of the few things that I stop everything I'm doing and watch whenever there's an update. I don't know how popular this project is in comparison to your others, but for me, it's been so amazing to watch!
You're still extremely diligent on this project, so happy to see how far you've come.
When people are trying to explain electronics they often use water or air as an analogy to make the concepts more relatable. You do the opposite. Love it. The more ways we have to understand the world the better we understand it.
It's all progress.
& You've learned a fair bit about church organs!
This project has heart and soul. I´ll visit your museum for sure once I´m around!
There's nothing quite like the sound of an old pipe organ
Beautiful
Finally noticed the hymn numbers. Nice.
This was definitely a labor of love. I can't imagine anyone else in the universe putting as much time & effort in this project as you did. You have the patience of a saint! The end product is magic. I am proud of you.
the tuning (or lack thereof) just adds more to the story, I love the sound this beast produces a collection of 50+ years of woes and triumphs
Just love the way you are tinkering a propper working organ together.
I LOVE that you properly loom your wiring old school, so much better that way!
Great work, Sam. You've put so much into giving Joan's organ a new life. Saved from the scrap, entertaining (and educating) people again. Brilliant!
I love this series so much. This was the reason I found to your channel since the video of getting the organ from the old church building turned into a house.
Omg, I just understood the numbers on the sign that were there for months now :)
Maybe you could show the blower/bellows on a CCTV display at the organ ?
The console, of course, needs to rise slowly out of the floor when you start to play.
Good idea. Not thought of that one
th-cam.com/video/Ce7USPnHZMA/w-d-xo.html
I absolutely adore the Frankensteininess of this organ! Giving something old a new life with new technology is just so cool!
I love the "whatever works" attitude
I love Joan's organ just the way it is. Tells a real story.
I felt a lot emotional too! When I saw your posts without all the ranks and everything I almost fainted HAHAHAH. The story behind this " beast " is incredible... from Joan who wanted to keep them instead of it beeing thrown away to you who restored it not in it's original state but enough to make and hear it sounding! I fell in love with the organ since when I saw your first video. From then I studied the instrument and watched so many videos on it that I can't even remember! We don't even know how much effort you're putting on this project
There is something about "upgrading" an old instrument with the new electronics without making it look like a plastic mould of an old instrument that is very nostalgic. Most old things get thrown away or they are inefficient to use with modern needs, but you managed to bring the organ back to 2023. Loved the outro about the organ playing! Also the LEDs are perfect, this is in fact TH-cam and if anyone are offended, they should listen to the radio!
you could add a live video feed of the blower apparatus into the organ room to keep it in the display
I would love to see Anna Lapwood play the Organ once it is finished.
Yes! Get the BBC on to this because everyone should see this EPIC journey!
Getting Anna Lapwood to play it was my first thought as well :)
Was just about to comment this 👌
I can’t help wondering how much these videos have bolstered Anna’s channel.. I certainly hadn’t heard of her until the algorithm started flagging up her channel shortly after I subscribed to this one (not, I should add, that I haven’t been glad to make the discovery)
It so needs to happen! - her second album could be "The Museum Sessions" 😅😅😅
This channel has me looking for organ pipes and it’s a whole new world.
1000000000% support leaving it looking as it is, and even feeling less than perfect, as long as it WORKS completely. let the old gargoyle sing
I can't wait until the world has access to this. What fun!! Imagine being able to play your own composition or lay a track down, have that recorded on a mic, sent to you by email and then do what you want with it! The viral demand could be astonishing. Automate that, manage the access and what a great way to raise funds.
Me and my kids love your channel thanks for keeping it clean we’re a 10 and 8 year old can watch it
You can always put a camera on the windchest and put a screen up in the organ room if you want people to see that bit working while they use the organ.
This is such a neat project. Love seeing it evolve.
I agree 100%. Leave the rough edges, the life, and age the way it is. It's awesome. For me, it's the contrast between the new and old tech. With the mix of synths and a classic old church organ keeping the old dirt and patina is perfect.
Got freaked out when you dragged the keyboard console. A few times there looked like it was going to topple over. Very relieved.
Plumb it with smoothbore pvc pipe. The pressure drop in that flexible stuff is high due to the turbulence at the walls
i mentionned that in the video and why i havent done so.
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER After more consideration, Air also has mass, so there is going to be some wow when you punch some low notes. It's the same reason why electric cars have instant throttle response vs internal combustion
@@retrofitter yes it does. But for a relatively small organ the difference is minuscule. People have mentioned the problem to me and I'm starting to think it's just one of those over the top things people do. Like gold plated connectors on hifi. I now have practical experience and can say there is no real disadvantage
Love the lights on the pipes as they play.
Great work fixing those leaks, adding better connections and getting the noisy parts into another room. Absolutely brilliant improvement. A+++ from me.
What an undertaking. So much work, so much knowledge and time. It's really coming together! Really enjoyed this series so far, and can't wait to see what's next.
I once restored an MG Midget 1973 (round wheel arch model) and by the time it no longer felt like the car I bought and dragged out of a hedge, I stopped loving it. It's a cautionary tale ;) Great attitude to heritage, Sam! 👍
It's perfect as ,it is.
I myself was inspired to make my own pipe organ from your videos, well done!!
Huge improvement soundwise with the blower in a separate room, the effort pays off definately! stoked to see the progress you made with this huge project.
Those LEDs add such a beautiful visual to go with the beautiful sound
Perhaps some lighting and a double pane window in the closet door so you can still see and watch the bellows?
I always love when a new vid for the organ comes out, they're one of my favorite instruments and watching you get to set up and play with one has been a delightful and fascinating experience. I for one think you're treating it right!
I keep expecting to see a piece of red/pink on white embroidery in a wooden frame saying 'Joan, sweet Joan' at some point in these videos.
Maybe one for us fans?
I put a pipe organ in my church in 1978 and later moved it to the new building in 1984. The ivories look yellow but that's the way they were. A few years later we got a new music director and she said to leave the roll top cover open and the ivories will bleach out due to ambient IR. I said to myself, yeah right. But, a few years later the ivories we much whiter, actually almost perfect. Wow! Thanks Linda for the tip.
Loved your CAD explanation, you're a pretty damn good teacher!
Thank you and keep making it!
Very cool! I've always been a fan of church organs for their amazing sound, and also of technology, so combining them like this -- and saving a church organ from the dump in the process -- is a definite win in my book. 🙂
I really enjoy watching you bring this organ into the 21st century. It's a wonderful application of new technology to old.
Switched on Vivaldi is fucking epic. From a lifetime of classical influence, study, and eventually electronic production and sound design. You're a bloody superhero mate
Loving the numbers on the hymn board ;)
3d printed flanges for the win! That was the first thing I ever designed. So useful!
My cat just asked me who's this cat ?
Exactly when you talk about cat!
Nice to see things like this organ and people like you making a crazy work to put things together and even enhance them. Good job!
Every haters tells you don't do it right but you do it, not them...
If you see this Sam, an idea for the pipes I had goes like this: PVC, but instead of PVC cement on the joints/couplers (permanent bonding), you use a bit of silicone caulk OUTSIDE the connection. Air tight (don't try with water) and removable. If you need to cut the PVC to length, it can always be coupled back together for full length. You can use the PVC as a manifold to connect to the flexible hoses you already have.
Just some theory crafting. I agree with your statements/thought-process on keeping the soul of the instrument in the looks department but making it more functional with the electronics. Wish you luck and thanks for the content!
Sam I gotta say you're acting like a true museum conservationist with your approach to this organ! preserving (and continuing) the story is totally the right approach.. not sure why youtube is obsessed with restoration videos these days- maybe because with the world going to shit , it's therapeutic for people to see things go back to how they were... anyway keep up the good work! Hope to visit someday :)
Kickass Vivaldi adaptation in the intro! Awesome work. Got me in a stormy summer mood immediately. Love all the organ tinkering.
A lot of work to move the air equipment but worth it;. Can't wait to see when this project is done!
Pipe organs are for devoted people, no one in this world could say you are not. It has so much soul, all his past, and your touch.
Your passion, intelligence, and unstoppable energy make this whole story so exciting to watch. Thank you for sharing it!
Sam without you that organ’s days would have already ended long ago. With the love you’ve given it will now live to play music for many more days! Love what you’ve done with it!
Can we get just one more chorus of “🎶 Sam you just don’t know what your doing…..🎶🎶” 🤣
Amazing job! Can't wait for the whole thing to be in place.
Exactly, it's patina. 👍
Hey, what about a window in the door so folks can see the bellows working?
its the only store cupboard its gunna be full of random crap. if one day it looks neat and tidy definitely! but its a fire door so would be a pricy door thats all i know :)
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER lol fair enough
What a lot of work, with lots of love for music and lots of love for an old but lovely church pipe organ. This is absolute beautiful and i think the only Midi church pipe organ on the whole planet. Pure beauty❤
What you came out of the house with to what it looks like and sound's great and looking much better with added led light's
Trail and error on size is the Key to success.
Can we all take a moment admire the effort put into the wax lacing?
I love your approach to this restoration!
My cat has runned away hahaha But great job! Beautiful organ, and you are a Genius!
Your commitment to this project and the amount of work you're putting into it - seemingly entirely on your own - is inspirational and frankly, humbling. More power to you! I look forward to seeing you complete it, however long it takes.
Don't lose hope, heart, verve, or get perturbed Sam! It's grandiose, don't get bellicose!
I wouldn't call it a step backwards. For me, these changes elevated it to the next level. How quiet it is now, is simply incredible and its sounds fantastic.
This is one of the best series ever and every part has been a joy to watch. That this is even a thing still boggles my mind, in a good way. Not many can say that they have a big church organ at home, lol.
Thanks
cheers lee!
I allready long for your Christmas-medley played on the organ.🎶🎶 😂🎄🎄🎅🤶🧑🎄🎶🎶
Putting stuff on wheels is a good idea in the Small - ish space you have.
I wonder if you could use PVC plumbing pipes with threads on them? That would be the best of both worlds.
The reason I am not using pvc I may have edited the bit out talking about it. Is because it'll be cut to size. And if I go to another place they'll all be cut for the old place. The pipe I am using atm is more than fine. Infact I'm starting to think the people talking about the issue with flexi pipe are being mellow dramatic
Getting more and more amazingly awesome 🤩 (or awesomely amazing, whichever way the air - silently - blows😍)👍👍👍
You get my like just for that amazing old school wiring loom on the keyboard 👍
Yeah I totally agree; clean off the mouse poop and whatever, but apart from that, leave it as-is. I bet it has a nice fusty, musty odour too and that’ll be part of it’s story to preserve. Brilliant!
ooooo, over 19 minutes on Joan's organ, lucky us
Have to respect the preservation of the flaws of the organ. It's one thing to take something and make it better but it's far harder to do that whilst still respecting it's original form. A great sentiment! I'm sure the original owner would have been very proud to have seen the end result.
My son did like seeing the Blower move around as we were playing though - I think that really hits home to make kids realise how this all works
Summer was always my favorite.
th-cam.com/video/bx-6P5wBkMc/w-d-xo.html
Its pretty bloody good man! Putting everyone to shame with how much you're doing on this, other projects and the rest of the museum!
The sound is great. I love the effort you put into it!
