    Remember when everyone said The Force Awakens was the worst Star Wars movie ever made and Jar Jar Abrams along with Kathleen Kennedy killed the franchise forever"?
    Remember when people said George Lucas was selfish, only cared about money and killed Star Wars forever with the Prequel trilogy and raped their childhoods? Edit: And they also said George should be banned from his own creation, fired from his company and no longer be allowed to make films because of this.
    I remember, I remember very clearly. This hate is nothing new at all, the internet just makes it easier to show, especially since we now have TH-cam and social media.

    I took my girlfriend to see TLJ about a week after it came out, she had watched all the films and the Clone Wars a couple months before TLJ and only really like Rogue One and Clone Wars until she watched it in theaters. TLJ is one of her favorite movies of all time, it was nice to get the perspective of a new fan, she really didnt care about Snoke, she was more caught up in the character dynamic of Kylo and Rey. She still prefers the Clone Wars over TLJ, but I thought this was intresting enough to share.

    Everyone grows up with their Star Wars movies and will defend them to the end. The same thing will happen one day with those who are growing up with these movies, just like what happened with the Prequels.

      Personally I like story in my films so I still despise the Sequels and happily accept the Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy.
      I don't even think fans of the ST can argue that.
      The story of the old films was just better, none of them are better movies than the other but as Star Wars films they are very different.

    I love how The Last Jedi shows Snoke underestimating Kylo. He manipulates Kylo’s feelings and he thought he was in control but Kylo is uncontrollable. Luke was the first one to see that and that scared Luke like he has never been scared before. Luke’s inner conflict and doubts started in that moment when he saw what his nephew will become. What Kylo did was kill Luke Skywalker optimistic spirt. Luke blamed himself for failing but there was nothing he could do to save Kylo. Luke felt hopeless because he could not redeem Kylo even if he tried. Remember Luke saw the good in Vader, but he didn’t see no light in Kylo. That’s scary, seeing complete darkness in someone you love that you feel responsible for. Kylo is not Vader, he is much worse because he doesn’t just want power he wants to destroy all ideologies that control power. He can’t be controlled because he has no religion, he has no limits, he just moves forward regardless the consequences of his actions.

    • @Lenny-ue8hk
      @Lenny-ue8hk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yeah when people say Luke was contradicting his character by even considering killing kylo, I remind them that the darkness he saw was beyond anything he could have imagined, and he came face to face with the emperor himself.

    • @bigsheed9003
      @bigsheed9003 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think people forget Luke would act on things before really thinking it through. He wanted to join the rebellion and fight not thinking about possibly dying in battle. He had a romanticized view of being heroic like his father. Then he find out the REALITY of war and his father because he ran into a fight to save his friends. Luke didn’t really think about the possibility of failure. Then he saw good in his father when no one could see it. He saved Anakin by giving up the fight not being badass. Luke gave up trying to be the badass hero in Return Of The Jedi. Fast forward to Kylo’s training, it is implied that Leia knew her son was slipping to the dark side. Uncle Luke thought he could save Kylo because there’s no way he’s as dark as Vader. Then Luke saw his future, and he knew there was no saving Kylo. When Kylo killed Luke’s students he blamed himself. This made a lot of sense to me. Why would he want that lightsaber? So much pain is connected to it. Why would he stay on an island by himself? Waiting to train a new Jedi? It makes sense he wanted to die alone. Why would he not want to see or help Han or Leia? He failed to save there son and his only choice was to kill him. Who would be in a rush to tell your sister and brother in law that great news? The beauty of The Last Jedi is their is plenty to discuss. Hopefully Episode 9 brings the whole saga to a satisfying conclusion.

      There was no room for the knights of Ren and I don’t see why it matters
      The reason Luke used his Jedi robe was cause he was gonna destroy the Jedi texts and he basically wanted to wear it while doing that. And the reason he still has the texts is cause he just couldn’t bring himself to burn them.

    When defending The Last Jedi, a lot of people bring up Luke's arc as being a great thing because he figured out that the Jedi way was a flawed system and it needed to end. Just like Luke needed to end his journey as a Jedi as well. That's why he did not want to train Rey and tried to convince her that the Jedi are not worth saving because of it. And what was that reason? Because of hubris and the Jedi believing they "owned" the force. So if he took himself out of the equation the force would balance itself out on its own and there would be no more dark side. Well guess what, that did not happen. Snoke and Kylo Ren didn't get weaker or lose their powers. They got stronger and the force awoke in Rey to combat the imbalance. Luke was wrong about the Jedi needing to end, the balance of the force and himself.
    Near the end of the movie, Luke learned the greatest teacher is failure and a Jedi should never give up because of it. Rey learned that lesson as well when she failed to turn Kylo Ren as well. It's a very simple arc to follow and no need to convoluted it with things that Luke was wrong about. One mistake does not render a system useless.
    The Jedi Code did not bring down the Jedi. Their mistake was not staying true to the Jedi way, the code. They became generals and warriors in a war and that is NOT the Jedi way. Involving themselves in the war directly made them easy scapegoats for a fear mongering politician like Palpatine to place the blame on when things went wrong.
    People have to remember that the Jedi were defenders of the galaxy for 1000 generations and they were guided by that Jedi Code. Again one mistake made by some Jedi in a given era does not render the entire system flawed. It just showed that those Jedi of that era (Prequel) made a mistake and didn't live up to being true Jedi and followed their own Code.

      That’s....Luke’s arc. He thinks that it’s the Jedi that are flawed for a huge chunk of the movie, not realizing that they were NOT following the Jedi code. Later, when he force-projects his way to crait, he says “I will not be the last Jedi “ because he realizes that the Jedi code is what defines the ideal Jedi, not their past actions when they were drunk with power. Or at least that’s how it came across to me.

      The story in the sequel trilogy just hasn't been good. People tend to complain less when you put a good movie with a good story in front of them. The Force Awakens wasn't just a rehash of A New Hope, it put the galaxy back to where we started. And by sticking so close to the story of the original cast and being a direct continuation just set 30 years later, you have somewhat ruined the ending of ROTJ.
      And even if you don't care about any of that, the fact is that all the stories in that 30 year gap would have made better movies than the one's we've been given.

    polarazing is exactly what Star Wars has been about since the first sequel came out, and especially during the prequel era. People forget that there were fans who didn't like Empire (critics were harsh on it too), and there was a backlash against Jedi saying it was too kid-friendly, and we all know what happened with the prequels. Polarizing is part and parcel of Star Wars, but in time, we move on, because no legacy is without it's triumphs and failures - the basis of actual wars

      @@AiringAustin I guess it depends on how you define "character growth". If that just means betterment/self-improvement, then I would agree with you. Luke is probably a worse person at the beginning of TLJ than he is at the end of ROTJ. But if "character growth" means change/development, then I would strongly disagree.
      I feel like Rian Johnson gave Luke the most tragic, hard-to-swallow backstory we could imagine, and Luke is worse off for it. But it leads to a lot of development and change on his part. For the most part, I find it pretty interesting and inspiring. But there are parts I do not like, certainly. Mostly, I think Luke and Rey needed a little more fleshing out and we needed a LOT less Canto Bight.
      As for other characters, I think we see a ton of growth in Kylo, Poe Dameron (even if I didn't like his plot), and I feel like Finn even evolved too. We can say all sorts of cons about this film, but I must give Rian Johnson credit; he was very intentional in developing each of these characters and giving them meaningful quests and challenges to teach them.

I LOVEEEE TCW, Rebels, the prequels, the originals, the anthologies, the games (even BF2017 which has gotten a lot better), the novels, and the comics. I'm SO excited for The Mandalorian, TCW S7, the Cassian show, the first Prequel novels in the Disney-era next year, Fallen Order, Episode IX (I will always hope that this film is good even if I HATED the last two in the trilogy), Galaxy's Edge (even though it seems to be only OT and ST content), etc. 1-2 movies won't ruin that for me. • @todo3602
      @todo3602 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @Mike Noir I'm assuming you mean "Why do I hate the sequels". I'll give my response in a civilized way that I hope other "sequel haters" can learn from.
      TFA - No character development. Even 2 movies into the trilogy the only character I give a shit about is Kylo. I couldn't care less about Rey, Finn, Hux, Snoke, Rose, literally everyone other than Kylo and OT characters.
      No world-building whatsoever. The biggest mistake this movie made was basically deleting the politics that made the Prequel era feel large. The sequels take place over the course of 2 weeks, and not having politics (in the movies) makes it feel SO much smaller. Not to mention we get Tatooine pt. 2, Hoth pt. 2, Yavin IV part 3 and 4 (Tako Dana and D'Qar), and more generic planets like the OT and TLJ did. The Prequels and the anthologies are the only films to have unique and interesting locations. Felucia, Coruscant, Umbara, Utupau, etc.
      Same plot as ANH. This is the biggest mainstream complaint with the movie, and honestly it's true. The main plot/story beats from both TFA and TLJ are the same as the OT, just done much worse than the OT did.
      The main protagonist. Rey is awfully written. Anakin trained for over 10 years, AND he was literally the chosen one, and he got raped by Count Dooku even with Obi-Wan's help. Luke trained for at least a few weeks, and got raped by Vader. Rey trains for LITERALLY NO TIME, she's not any chosen one, she's not even fucking related to anyone important, and she destroys Kylo in their first fight (after Finn held his own for too long as well). I get the whole excuse about Kylo being emotionally damaged after killing his father and shit, but that's all BS. Kylo should've destroyed both Rey and Finn. However Lucasfilm/Disney isn't going to do that in the first movie, and killing the main two protagonists in the first film in a trilogy is a bad idea. Therefore they should've never been put in that situation in the first place.
      Ruining Old Luke Skywalker. Everyone blames this on TLJ, but I think TFA was the movie that started this off. They made Luke someone who ran away from all his issues, hid on an island, and was about to kill himself if Rey hadn't come and saved the day. I don't know if people were expecting Luke to go, "Hey, I've been on this island for too long, let's go change my mind and save the Resistance, yay!". No. If he's been out there for a long time, and he has a good enough reason (in his opinion), he's not going anywhere. That's why I think realistically TFA was the one that ruined Luke and TLJ was the best direction they could've gone with what JJ set up.
      These are my 5 biggest issues with TFA, and they're major issues especially for a Star Wars movie.
      TLJ - Again, no character development except for Kylo. Still don't care about anyone's story.
      No world-building. The fact that there's a very small time-jump, equivalent to R1 - ANH, this story still feels small as hell. They could've done a 2 year time jump. Have Luke actually train Rey but refuse to go out on his own. That way it doesn't feel as small, it leaves room for an animated show like TCW to flesh out that 2 year period, and Rey actually deserves all the shit that she does. You could build up the Resistance so it doesn't feel like Rebellion vs. Empire again.
      No unique locations, again. Not much needs to be said here other than Cantonica is another desert (but wait it has a casino), Crait is Hoth again (but wait now it's salt). This all comes down to the Disney-era Lucasfilm not wanting to make the same "mistake" as the prequels in overusing CGI (even though most of the prequels were filmed on miniature sets, not entirely CGI). But by not using CGI you're creating more and more boring locations. Ep. IX is rumoured to have ANOTHER snow planet. Canto Bight is the closest thing we've gotten to a unique location, but they made the rest of the planet another fucking desert. CGI has improved SIGNIFICANTLY since 2002/2005. CGI looks way better now, so you can do the stuff that the prequels tried to do with the locations but make them look great on the big screen. But they're wasting all that potential.
      This movie doesn't feel like Star Wars. The prequels, whatever your opinion is on them (I love them), you have to admit they felt like Star Wars. The OT, is well, the OT. The anthologies are the perfect mix between the PT and OT.
      The main plot is literally a space race. Whoever can reach the Resistance ship faster. wtf.
      Rose. She's diversity done wrong. She takes everything that was remotely interesting about Finn in TFA and deletes it. Like Rey and Holdo, this trilogy can't seem to get female characters right. Which is really weird since Star Wars has so many great ones. Ahsoka, Jyn, Qi'ra, Padme, Leia, Satine, Hera, Sabine, etc. Hell Paige at the beginning of TLJ was awesome too. It sucks she had like 2 minutes of screen time.
      Those are my 6 biggest issues with TLJ, and again they're major issues.
      I hope I listed that in a civilized way, not like those TH-cam and Instagram trolls that go, "DiSnEy rUiNeD sTaR WaRs fOrEvEr".

    Sure, there are some things I would have liked to be handled differently, like Captain Phasma and Canto Bight, but those couple of minor complaints pale in comparison to the sheer amount of quality this movie has given us. Everything from the acting, dialogue, cinematography, action, effects, characters is just immaculate.
    It took established characters and managed to develop them in a way that, for me, felt entirely natural. It managed to continue a story in a way that felt satisfying and logical without being formulaic and predictable.

Although I still would’ve appreciated a bit more risk taking after the scene with Rey and Kylo fighting, where instead of going right back to the way it was, Sith vs Jedi, dark vs light, maybe we could’ve gotten a true grey Jedi faction. Then all of Luke’s talk about why the Jedi need to end would’ve actually been proven to be beneficial. Also the entire Canto Byte section (I don’t know how to spell it sorry) shouldn’t be in the film. Instead we should’ve gotten more of Rey’s training, and more of her temptation towards the dark side, which would again, culminate into the creation of a more grey order. Nevertheless, the movie is still pretty good once I cooled off from my initial dislike of the movie.

    I'll try to be brief: I hate the film. The more I've tried to give it a chance, the more thing I find about it I really dislike or just flat out hate.
    It's not even the ideas presented, but how poorly developed the script seems. So many things feel unearned and the tone is horribly confusing. I feel like Rian had some ideas, wrote a draft and they made the movie out of that. I feel that script needed 6 more months to a year in the oven. That's just me though. And yeah, I don't like quantifying about media either.
    And yeah, I've had my fair share of good discussions. The one I had with AT-AT Chat was really good.

      I like TLJ and Infinitiy war is good, but I dont think one can argue that Infinity war ever wanted to or could subvert expectations even if it wanted. Not only the storyline is pre established in concept, but even the whole part 1 and 2 split gave away pretty early on what would happen.
      By comparing it, the only reason Infinitiy war could be better in subverting expectations than TLJ is because it didnt.
      I think they are both good but not really as compareable, exept from some minor story tropes and them both beeing a movie.

    What I never understood was why people always refer to The Last Jedi as "good, but flawed." Because, last time I checked, every single film is flawed, it's just a matter of whether or not we're willing to admit that. People choose to deify certain movies, yet neglect to apply that same objectivity to others. I *know* that if I scrutinized the original trilogy with the same degree of gravitas typical of today's standards, those films would not be able to withstand it. Yet, I'm supposed to turn a blind eye to those allegedly "incorruptible" films in spite of the fact that they're just as, if not more absurd? No, never. Screw that.

    • @Lenny-ue8hk
      @Lenny-ue8hk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every film is flawed so when somebody says it’s great, you know there are flaws already, but when somebody says it’s flawed, they’re intentionally bringing up the flaws despite knowing that all movies are flawed, which shows the flaws are more significant. (Personally I think it’s got way more amazing stuff than it does flaws.)

    • @isaiahnunez1796
      @isaiahnunez1796 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lenny-ue8hk See, that's just it. Who has the right to dictate that one film's flaws supercede those of another? It's at that point when the deciding factor is bias, plain and simple. The basis upon which we judge films today is made of sand, unreliable and malleable.
      I've always found it to be interesting when people are so sure of themselves, and of their point of view. An idea is like an incurable cancer, a bulletproof assassin. Once somebody has an idea instilled in their mind it's almost impossible to change it. And, it's for that reason why an opinion can be wrong. For the sole reason that a person's outlook will shift and change like an unruly wave in the sea. These are just my nagging thoughts.

    Sadly I have seen the audience decline at the midnight screenings for each new Star Wars movie that has come out under Disney. I actually like the movie better than I did a year ago because I’ve had time to notice more of the details in relation to the message of the movie. It’s far from a perfect film, but because the writers took time to focus strongly on the message, and not what people wanted, is what really makes it for me. Luke changed from a legendary hero to a man who struggled to fill expectations that was broken by it. Rey changed from a starry-eyed fan to someone searching for truth no matter what side. Finn going from selfish to selfless. Poe going from cocky full-blast to someone who has learned to take a moment to think. Ben changing from someone trying to live up to his grandfather to a person who has only felt pain and searches to make others feel the same.

I honestly just want peace in the fandom, we don't have to agree on everything but we can at least respect each other and leave the directors, actors and producers who are just doing their job alone. This toxicity really doesn't do anything good. Or rather it has only helped some truly repulsive people profit off from the outrage and that's honestly awful. Star Wars doesn't have to be part of the ridiculous "culture war" that plagues the Internet. Even if the new movies aren't for everyone please don't support people that are manipulating that dislike for their own selfish gain.

      I have to say that at that moment I was so giddy and I was having the time of my life it was on such a huge incline at that point because then we go into the part of the Finn and Rose plot I enjoyed where they are off of Canto Bight and on the actual star destroyer, you get Kylo Ren and Rey fighting over the lightsaber, you have Holdo doing the hyperspace kamikaze(Something that people got upset over just so they could have another thing to complain about), you have Finn and Phasma fighting(Finally Phasma actually sort of did something), and you have Yoda slapping sense into Luke.
