donny hathaway & roberta flack. some of the best duets ever.
No disrespect to those saying they prefer Leon's version. Maybe for nostalgia reasons? But to deem his version superior "musically" is a reach! Leon's voice is all over the place. Like someone stated, Donny captured the essence of it. Its Soulful. Rich. Smooth. And the strings add another dimension to it. Leon wrote a beautiful song. But I prefer this version.
There is only ONE: DONNY HATHAWAY.
Hands down!
Leon Russell had a slight speech impediment caused by an injury at birth. If you watch a live performance you can see it. But I do love Donnie Hathaway's version.
I still prefer Leon Russell's version, maybe for sentimental reasons...but I LOVE this version too.
Finally! I was waiting for you to review my favorite artist. I bought his live album in 1972, when I was 14, and it redefined music for me.

Great request Michell Michelle. I had not heard this smooth and excellent cover of this song written by the great Leon Russell. I remember Donny more for his hits with Roberta Flack, especially Where is the Love. This is a great request for our two love birds. It’s such a heartfelt plea for forgiveness and love. I was just waiting for them to crack. 😭 This Song really captures the essence of the rarity of each moment in a life that so quickly floats away and the importance of when we are together with the ones we love. 👍👍

Great choice. Leon wrote this great song, but in my opinion , Donny found the essence of the song and conveyed it perfectly. For all Leon Russell fans , visit The Church Studio in Tulsa, OK. Leon bought the studio and it is a museum dedicated to Leon as well as a working studio. The people will guide you through the facility and give you information and insight on Leon. RIP Donny. RIP Leon.

Its such a perfect and powerful song that its been covered by some of the very best vocalists. Mick Hucknall/Simply Red is my personal favourite. Particularly his version on the CUBA! live album.

Thank you Michele Michele for requesting this beautiful song. Although I usually prefer Leon's original version, this is off the charts moving. Donny's voice is incredible and he used it perfectly to underscore the loving message that the lyrics bring. Thank you so much Nick and Lex for reacting to this tune. You had me in tears too😢🧡
I've been a fan of the Carpenters since they came on the music scene in the 60's so of course their cover of A Song For You is my favorite. I had no idea Donny Hathaway covered this song as well. What a beautiful interpretation. The Leon Russell original is a wonderful performance as well. What I love about the Carpenters version are of course Karen's voice but also their rich harmonies which they use sparingly in their cover.

Donny was at college and shared a room with the great soul artist Leroy Hutson, who you should also investigate! Donny was such a great artist and with a soulful voice that was so good. I think he never made it really big as talented as he was due to vocally sounding often like Stevie Wonder! He had more Gospel tones in his voice than Stevie though. Mark GV - Reference Point

Donny touched the depths of your soul when he sang this song!!!! You got to be in touch with your spirit person to feel where he was coming from when he was singing it!!! Leon Russell tried but he never got there!!
One of the best covers of this classic song by Leon Russell ever made. Donny's voice is terrific, but I prefer Leon's version a tiny bit more, mainly because of the grit and passion. ❤✌

A shame not to be exposed to Leon’s own superior version. This does not really do it justice, actually quite contrived comparatively, IMO.
I know music is subjective but how can anyone say donny isnt the best version. Listen to that voice….
