He was schizophrenic and sometimes I think that artists who suffer from these types of mental illnesses feel things on a different level than we do. He sang everything on a different level of emotion and difficulty and passion like he meant every word

My favorite Donny Hathaway song. He was a child musical prodigy but had mental health issues and eventually committed suicide by jumping from a balcony. He refused to take his meds because he didn't like how they affected him. He had depression and paranoid schizophrenia and died way too young like many geniuses' do.
"I love you in a place where there is no space or time" is the most masterful summary of grief I have ever heard.
When you hear Donny sing, you automatically sit up straighter! He was magical. So missed. 💔
Donny is (was) a fantastic pianist as well as a legendary singer who left us way too soon. His daughter Lalah carries his talent as part of his legacy.
Donny was a damned genius! This is 1 my favorite songs. I always thought he wrote this song, but I just found out that Leon Russell wrote & sang this. Pls react to his live performance. It's different & normally I'd never listen to anything like this, but OMG! I felt every word. It proves that you don't have to be a great singer BUT, it's so damned beautiful. I lived in an adjacent housing project to Donny in St. Louis, but he predates my time by a generation. However, my horn instructor went to high school with him and I attended that same high school.

Nice reaction, but you need to react to Leon Russell singing this song and playing the piano. He wrote the song and there are several videos of him singing it live. Look for the one in 1971. Donny’s singing is smooth, but Leon’s is raw.

Willie Nelson is the `owner` of this song. !!!!! Song composed by LEON RUSSELL Both versions more sincere and down to earth. This version is too showy and frothy. Overcomplicating it.....Ruining the simplicity and depth of the words.
I have always appreciated both Donny's version, and Leon Russell's rendition since he was the songwriter too, but for me, I still have a hard time hearing any other version of this song besides the Carpenters and Karen Carpenter's voice singing these words.
