  • It’s that time of the year to begin harvesting potatoes. We lifted our first root of early potatoes, Ulster Prince. We were surprised by the size of the potatoes and how dry the ground was that they had grown in. We also harvested our first head of calabrese. Harvests are beginning to flow.

Hi you two, I was surprised at how dry the ground was. I’m guessing that was the reason they were slug free. Perhaps all the slugs have headed to our strawberry patch where they’ve damaged lots of the crop. It will be interesting to see if all the other roots of Ulster Prince produce big potatoes. Luckily the ones we harvested cooked well and tasted very nice.

They've devastated a few of our cauliflowers and left the broccoli. Happy gardening.

If the potatoes came out so big why not pull rest? They are already much larger than most early potatoes i have seen. Wont they just split at some point?

I’ve never had a problem with potatoes splitting. I always leave our potatoes in the ground until the skins have set before lifting and storing them. I’ll probably lift the rest over the next few weeks.
