@@delight5667 I don't know. He was never really good at giving promos. Mix that with him constantly smiling and I always thought that he would've been one of the more down to earth guys in the locker room.
This is surreal for me. When I was a wrestler I met Gangrel and Luna at a show we were on together and had a nice long conversation. He told me about the Possum Kingdom connection with his entrance music. In the years since I began to wonder if I had imagined that aspect of the conversation, and I sat here watching this and waiting for him to say it and he did. Life is weird!
That's pretty cool man. I have a question. I've seen enough of Gangrel doing shoot interviews to see how relaxed and mellow he seems to be. That being said, what was Luna like in that environment? Of course her character portrayal was that of a chick way too insane to enjoy being around but that's her character. Obviously it's well documented that she could be a real "piece of work" in her personal life at times but it's been said that she wasn't always that way. I was just curious from the standpoint of someone like you who was around her in a backstage setting (even if for one night) what your impression of her was as you got to see her out of character with her guard down.
@MaynardOwns Undertaker's palm muting theme is easily one of my favorites. I honestly don't know what else to call it besides "that palm muting theme". Plus I don't know how Steve saying "you know Bulls on Parade by Rage?" translates into Glass Shatters, but that's another banger.
The name was owned by WhiteWolf and if he owned the gimmick I can see that not going over well. Shame, great wrestler and The Brood has one of the best entrances ever.
A simple Google search can tell you. Like for example Chris benoit's trademark is owned by his kid David . So in essence David Benoit can come back as Chris Benoit
Would love to see Gangrel in the WWE HOF.. much deserved Gangrel seems to never age, looks the same as he did back in the late 90s, early 00s.. dude really is a vampire lol
Yeah, and I forget either GamePro or EGM magazine back in the day did a preview of the game and they put that little disclaimer too at the end of the article. I think just for showing him in screenshots they had to include that.
Vince Russo was awesome when he had someone to temper his ideas. He understood the “character” aspect better than probably any one. Not all of his were good, but he tried to make everyone unique. Unfortunately in WCW and later TNA there was no one so say “listen bro, that’s a good idea, let’s do half of it”
As someone who played a Gangrel in a live-action Vampire: the Masquerade campaign before Gangrel made his debut with that name, I have to say it is absolutely hilarious that he owns the trademark now and I hope he does go all-in with merchandise
I loved it when I was a kid. And it’s not till listening to this that I realized the group was never explained. They were just a group of edgy dudes with the coolest entrance, and that was enough.
The Brood was awesome. They existed during the Attitude Era when the WWE was getting away from the supernatural and cartoon like gimmicks too. To me this makes the fact they were legitimately cool even more impressive. I remember being at an event in Tacoma, Washington and I believe it was the first time Gangrel actually talked on the mic. Even though they were short lived as a group, The Brood still remains one of my favorite wrestling crews ever. The music, the lighting; and the way Gangrel, Edge, and Christian would walk to the ring all worked together perfectly.
the brood was crazy and that was the best entrance nothen today can beat that gangerl entrance was the best and only game to have that entrance was WM2000 on N64 he needs to be in the hall of fame
WWE13 also had it in the game. It also had the Brood entrance where you could put Gangrel, Edge, and Christian in it. I just wish they gave them their entrance gear and Christian his puffy shirt as an alternate costume that he wore at the time.
That story about them not wanting him smiling or laughing is kind of annoying because I thought it fit the character perfect. Smiling or laughing doesn't always equate to being happy or not being scary and being scary doesn't always equate to trying to look mean. Sycho Sid is a prime example. He was always laughing like a big scary jacked up psychopath. The smile and laugh was part of portraying a psychopath. There's a big difference between some great lookin talent smiling/laughing and a vampire dude with vampire teeth who comes out through a ring of fire with a cup of blood he takes a swig from and then spits all over the place. When a dude who has THAT visual going for himself is smiling/laughing, that adds to the scary from where I'm sitting. More menacing is probably the best way to put it and that's why it worked best that way imo as opposed to if he was just "mean muggin" all the time instead. Great example: When Charles Manson used to do interviews and smile/laugh during them, I never thought to myself "oh he's just such a happy decent fellow". There was almost an extra layer of scary to his laughing/smiling because of the crazy shit he was saying, what he ultimately was (batshit crazy), and the swastika tattooed on his forehead didn't help that matter either. Just a thought worth mentioning.
Vince McMahon is the dumbest idiot ever ...gangrels vampire character was one of the coolest characters ever and to this day no one can recreate a vampire character as cool as gangrel and Vince not only didnot use him but also had told him to remove the fangs earlier...what an uncreative idiot
It was a genius move, tbh. Gangrel was late on the scene and wrestling was done with the over-the-top supernatural new gimmicks. He was 5-10 years too late. Stop it.
This dude doesn’t age. Gangrel has looked about 60 years old since the first time I seen him on tv in mid/late 90s all the way up to today. 100% he’s a legit vampire. 🧛 ⚰️
Wow I remember seeing a pic of him and the bottom writing said "owned by White Wolf". Very smart on his part. Too bad he never went to far. I felt like he had gr8 potential and gr8 finisher. But I think the plan from the beginning was to setup Edge for superstar status.
Possum Kingdom was actually a song I originally wanted to use when I decided to go "dark". I see exactly what he's talking about when it comes to that song.
Watching Gangrel being one of the most well adjusted wrestlers Ive seen interviewed is like when I met Corpse Grinder of Cannibal Corpse in Disney's Magic Kingdom. Jolly nice bloke.
Just hijacking but I wanted to add on that George (Corpse Grinder) is one of the nicest dudes on the planet. I met him in a buss station literally in 2001 and he was just so friendly.
I worked quite a few shows with Gangrel throughout the 2000s and he is one of the nicest guys on the face of this planet. Him and Dustin Rhodes, I think or two of the nice disguise in the business. Hacksaw Jim Duggan also. Always with Luna by his side, at least at that time. She was very cool also. For guys to be in the business as long as a lot of those guys were and to still have that heart of gold, truly amazing. Because the business eats up and spits out so many people and changes their attitude. But not these guys. Regardless, I think they could have used him just as long as Edge and Christian. Not sure why they didn’t. Even with a character change, he was a solid worker, good on the mic and I think could’ve had star potential with the right push. But, he’s still working to this day and has a great school. Hope to run into him again soon. Same thing with Dustin and Jim Duggan. As all three of them are some of my favorite people I ever worked with in the business.
Gangrel's vampire gimmick in WWE was iconic but eventually started to feel dated. While he brought a unique flair to the ring with his dark persona and entrance, fans began craving new creativity in wrestling. His character may have been memorable, but as times changed, so did the expectations and tastes of the audience. It's a reminder that even legends must evolve to stay relevant in an ever-changing sport like professional wrestling. Remembering Gangrel’s contributions is essential, yet his style might not hold up against today’s high-octane entertainment standards!
Whereabouts in Geordie land? I know he’s wrestled in the Midlands a few times. I don’t think he’s aged a day I could listen to him talk most of the time, especially when he has his own podcast thing going on (if he still does)
I'm glad they didn't push for him to be so serious. I think that was the problem with Kevin Thorn in ECW. Vampires should be feared yes but should be confrontable with who they are. It's more concerning seeing somebody so happy as they drink blood and dark stuff like that than one's not happy and so serious.

For those stating that White Wolf has a trademark on the clan name Gangrel, that may be true. No one owns the word gangrel. Gangrel, the word, means wandering person, beggar, or a toddler. A fitting name for the clan, no doubt. I use to wonder if David and Luna played the game on the road with others and become inspired? It would not have suprised me in the least. Fun to imagine a game of VtM with Luna, Edge, Christian, and Gangrel... it would be wild.
I kind of feel like he deserved a better crowd here. Not like they were terrible, they just didn't seem into his story. But he made quite a few funny comments and no one single person laughed

What I will say about Vince is that he was great at creating talent from his mind not everything worked but the ones that did work were amazing. Underrated. He's a great wrestler.
Underrated, I can still watch matches over 20 years old, but feel the hair on the back of my neck raise up when that music hits.
He was and still is awesome!!!
Underrated for sure!!!
look at his matches dude could bump like a mfer great wrestler.
