I’m reading a fascinating book entitled Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo. As an old (71)white guy with six full decades of perspective, I have to say that Ms. Oluo really nails how the cards have been stacked in my favor whether I knew it or not. As I read the book I had a flood of memories of the things I took for granted as having access to (jobs, education, social opportunities) that were and still are limited and limiting for some Americans. And I grew up the son of a low wage car mechanic, but I still had the significant advantage of whiteness. I watched family members’ racism and misogyny elevate to anger during the 1970s as women and minorities began demanding their rights. For many of them, it hasn’t changed since. It is this bitter animosity and hatred that is at the heart of Trumpism. That’s what MAGA is; the desperate grab for the power whites feel entitled to.

I agree, but the only reason that I am not also one of those racist or misogynistic white males is because I insist on my judging people solely by the content of their character, despite the fact that African-American racists and feminists want to judge me by my sex and skin color. All remedies should be solely NEED-based, and completely color-blind and sex-blind. Affirmative action for those in need I 100% support, whereas affirmative action for all members of a particular race or sex I 100% oppose. Trying to fight racism/sexism with racism/sexism just breeds more racism/sexism. If it works out that 99.99% of all affirmative action based upon NEED benefits African-Americans, that's fine, but let it be determined by NEED, not race. It may seem like a technicality, but if we want to eliminate racism/sexism, we need to start by eliminating racism/sexism from our laws. People need help because they need help, not because of skin tone or gender.

That exclusion was based entirely, solely, completely on race-not on need. I believe it is right that these decisions should indeed be based entirely on race. One of the goals of AA was to create the kind of continuous, multi-generational flow of young blacks having access to and attending higher education, getting their degrees prospering.....rinse and repeat. AA SHOULD have been mandatory at every college and university when it was first implemented, but whiteness and the protection of that whiteness in higher education wouldn’t allow that. Had we done that some 50 years ago, the goals of AA would have been met or would be far further down the line. That would make your needs-based idea more appropriate. What I hear in your suggestion is the reluctance of a white person to accept the idea that an eligible and deserving white student might lose a college slot on the basis of race. Think for a moment how many times a young deserving black student was deemed ineligible solely because of race and has felt that same feeling. There’s an equality to that disappointment, too. That white student has more alternatives for college attendance than that black student in the first place or the black student wouldn’t be looking for AA help. Changing Affirmative Action to needs based so that white people aren’t upset that blacks are actually being helped is not a good enough reason.

It's a subtle point . They believe that Jesus will be induced to come back when a bunch of events happen on Earth. They're trying to make those events happen.

I’m reading a fascinating book entitled Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo. As an old (71)white guy with six full decades of perspective, I have to say that Ms. Oluo really nails how the cards have been stacked in my favor whether I knew it or not. As I read the book I had a flood of memories of the things I took for granted as having access to (jobs, education, social opportunities) that were and still are limited and limiting for some Americans. And I grew up the son of a low wage car mechanic, but I still had the significant advantage of whiteness. I watched family members’ racism and misogyny elevate to anger during the 1970s as women and minorities began demanding their rights. For many of them, it hasn’t changed since. It is this bitter animosity and hatred that is at the heart of Trumpism. That’s what MAGA is; the desperate grab for the power whites feel entitled to.

I agree, but the only reason that I am not also one of those racist or misogynistic white males is because I insist on my judging people solely by the content of their character, despite the fact that African-American racists and feminists want to judge me by my sex and skin color. All remedies should be solely NEED-based, and completely color-blind and sex-blind.
Affirmative action for those in need I 100% support, whereas affirmative action for all members of a particular race or sex I 100% oppose. Trying to fight racism/sexism with racism/sexism just breeds more racism/sexism.
If it works out that 99.99% of all affirmative action based upon NEED benefits African-Americans, that's fine, but let it be determined by NEED, not race. It may seem like a technicality, but if we want to eliminate racism/sexism, we need to start by eliminating racism/sexism from our laws. People need help because they need help, not because of skin tone or gender.

AA SHOULD have been mandatory at every college and university when it was first implemented, but whiteness and the protection of that whiteness in higher education wouldn’t allow that. Had we done that some 50 years ago, the goals of AA would have been met or would be far further down the line. That would make your needs-based idea more appropriate. What I hear in your suggestion is the reluctance of a white person to accept the idea that an eligible and deserving white student might lose a college slot on the basis of race. Think for a moment how many times a young deserving black student was deemed ineligible solely because of race and has felt that same feeling. There’s an equality to that disappointment, too. That white student has more alternatives for college attendance than that black student in the first place or the black student wouldn’t be looking for AA help. Changing Affirmative Action to needs based so that white people aren’t upset that blacks are actually being helped is not a good enough reason.
