    Getting jobs even after passing standard pathway AMC-2 is hard. It is a bottle neck for many doctors trying to get into the health system. This is often precipitated by the lack of recency in practice accrued due to preparation for these exams while staying in Australia. Most of the jobs advertised in hospitals are for doctors already having full general registration. You cannot get full general registration without getting your first job on provisional registration. Hope the Covid-19 situation eases some of these absurd rules.

    • @CareerDoctor
      @CareerDoctor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it’s a catch-22 for many. Happily for most (but sadly for IMGs) COVID-19 is not improving the situation here as the hospitals are less busy than usual.

      Hi Beril you don’t need permanent residency to be given a job offer. It’s just that all jobs go to citizens and permanent residents first. You have to apply for a job where there is no suitable applicants who are citizens or permanent residents.

      @CareerDoctor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Milan you are watching the right video. With Australian Citizenship the process will be a fair bit easier. I would suggest completing your degree in Serbia and Montenegro and if you are required to do an internship there do at least that. One or two years clinical experience is generally preferable. You would then sit for the AMC Certificate as described in the video, and try to get your first provisional registration. Once you complete this post successfully you will be able to apply for general registration and then apply for specialty training. One thing you will have to do , even though you are an Australian Citizen is sit an English test. Because you have been studying Medicine in another language.

      Hi Deepak the answer is it depends. The majority of IMGs are successful in obtaining a position by being able to appear for an in person interview. So you may wish to apply for a tourist or study visa to come to Australia for a period of time to see if you can find a suitable position. Or you may want to wait till after you complete your Clinical examinations. Again, many find it useful to study for these in Australia and you have to sit these in Australia. Does that answer your question?

    Hello! I am a medical student in Romania, an EU country, and I want to pursue my specialty training in Australia. In Romania, the medical school program lasts six years, with the last three years consisting of clinical rotations through all medical specialties. For instance, one month in emergency medicine, one month in general surgery, one month in pediatrics, and so on. Upon graduation, there is no required internship.
    My question is, once I have passed AMC1 and AMC2, can I start my specialty training in Australia directly without having completed an internship in my home country, since such an internship does not exist? Or do I need to work in Romania for a period before taking AMC1 and AMC2? In Romania, you can only work after graduation as a doctor in training, which means I would need to choose a specialty in order to work. However, this is not considered an internship but rather a doctor in training. What specialty would you recommend that would help me continue my training in Australia?

    • @CareerDoctor

      If you don't need to complete an internship in your country then you don't need to do one for Australia. You will need to complete 12 months experience under the Standard Pathway prior to being able to apply for specialist training. You also need PR for about 50% of the training programs.

    Hi, thank you for this helpful video. I'm a British Citizen with a medical degree from Ukraine. I plan on going through the standard pathway and have recently booked my AMC 1 exam. My question is, I don't have any work experience as a Dr, and is currently not registered as a Dr. yet, is there still a chance of getting a job in Australia after passing AMC 1 or if I pass both AMC 1 and 2, would that make a difference?

    • @CareerDoctor

      Without any health professional experience it is unlikely that an employer in Australia will be willing to take you on. The Part 2 is not going to improve this very much.

    Hello. I am going to be graduated next year from Medical university which is 6 years. In our country internship is not obligatory to be passed by medical graduates. If I want after my graduation to have job permission in Australia, should I pass an internship here in my country which is not obligatory, and then get to Australia? If no, then if I pass my MCQ exam, will I be obligated to pass the internship in Australia when I come to Australia?

I'm a medical student from Brazil considering to work in Australia and I noticed that although my medical school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, it isn't listed in the Australian Medical Council. Would you know what is the process for a medical school to become part of that list? Are there any documents the school must provide to the Council or is it something the Council does by itself? I have graduated a while ago and will be starting my internship in Iraq in a month or two. But i do want to pursue my medical career in Australia. Now, if I do finish my Internship year here in Iraq and want to apply through the standard pathway what exactly are the steps that I have to go through, would I have to redo my internship in Australia? Does finishing my internship here in Iraq give me any advantage ?
    Another question if I may, is that here in Iraq we aren’t given our certificates until both internship and residency are complete, though I might be able to obtain a document supporting that I have graduated from said medical college with ___ percentage without the individual subject grades though, from your knowledge would such document be sufficient ?

But more than likely you don't get a lot of credit for your current degree (maybe a year or two). Also the cost of Medical School is quite high here. Hi Vohra it sounds like you would be eligible for a GP Area of Need post. You are on the right path requesting assessment via RACGP. You can also apply to ACRRM. It may be worth contacting the various rural health workforce agencies (for e.g. www.nswrdn.com.au) about possible positions. You will undoubtedly also have to sit a PESCI once offered a job. Here is a list of AON GP posts for the Sate of NSW www.health.nsw.gov.au/AON/Pages/gp-vacancies.aspx

      There’s no real set criteria. Generally it will be acceptable if it’s the norm in your country.

    Also, is there any salary attached during this work placement acessment.
    Finally after having obtained the AMC certificate what's the next step, am going for a specialty in gyno and obs. Thank you

      The 12 months provisional registration is a requirement for everyone. If you obtain a job to do this then it will be paid. You need to obtain general registration to apply for specialty training. O&G college is difficult to get into.

    Hi, I just graduated in Italy and I'm looking to move to Australia. Do you think would be better to have my residency here in Italy (4 more years and I would be fully trained) and then apply for a specialist Pathway or to apply as soon as I can for standard Pathway?

      Not knowing the specialist training system in Italy its hard to comment. But I generally recommend completing specialist training if you can. Sounds like you would benefit from one of my strategy calls.

  • @sherinjose2033

    Thanks for such a descriptive explanations.
    I have some doubts, can you please clarify them..?
    Suppose I come to Australia by standard pathway Clearing AMC cat test and clinical assessment, then I do 1 yr supervised training under provisional registration, so after this 1 yr can I go for general registration, and with general registration what are my chances of getting a job?
    I am asking this doubt because one of my friends from my same medical school cleared amc cat and clinical, and in Perth she is working as Rmo level 1. So she told me that she has to complete rmo 1, then 2 and then 3...
    After Rmo 3, she has to go to registrar post...
    So hearing all her descriptions I became very doubtful about job opportunities in Australia and the steps after these AMC cat , clinical and provisional registration yr 1 which you have mentioned in your video.
    So can you please explain me about steps after these exams, and whether Queensland or Victoria or western Australia which is a better place for doctor job opportunities

    • @CareerDoctor
      @CareerDoctor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sherin I will eventually do a video or two explaining the local training system a bit more. But in short for some specialty training colleges and programs you need a minimum of one year working as a doctor in Australia (for e.g. Psychiatry). For the most you need a minimum of 2 years. For all you will need General Registration which you gain after completing your provisional registration year. For some you also need permanent residency or citizenship (RACS and GP training are included here).
      Your friend is confusing you by talking about how you move up through the system as a trainee doctor in the hospitals.
      It is true however that for certain specialties (surgery and anaesthetics for example) that there is stiff competition, so doctors are often waiting longer to get on the programs (PGY3 and more).
      Once you have your general registration your chances of securing another position increase significantly. It just might not be a training job.
