- In this demo, I played the MS-10 with Roland DEP-5 (delay) and Lexicon MPX 500 (reverb).
The semimodular monophonic Korg MS-10 hit the market 1978 and was the small brother of the popular MS-20. It can be seen as a cutdown version of the MS-20. It has 1 VCO, 1 VCF, 1 LFO and 1 ADSR envelope. It has one feature, that the MS-20 doesn't has: PWM - pulse width modulation. It can be modulated by the LFO, ADSR, keyboard, noise or any other external source. It also has an input jack for external signals - they can be treated with the filter and envelopes.
It has a 12 dB filter - similar to the MS-20 lowpass filter. But many MS-10 sounds are not possible with a MS-20 - for example the screaming basses from 2:20
The MS-10 is an interesting synthesizer and also an useful expansion to your MS20. If you don't have a MS-20, don't worry - the MS-10 delivers some typical MS-20 sounds - but only a fraction of them. The MS-10 sounds great - raw, electronic basses, dirty leads, interesting FX... and you can treat external sounds with the filter.
This synth is very beautiful
Just when I was imagining how you patched the sounds at 3:50, you went and answered my prayers with that camera angle. I will forever be grateful for that 🙏🏽
amazing demo, thank you!
+Dil B (codeprefix) you're welcome!
The thereminesque wailing four minutes in was the best.
Can't even begin to tell you how useful this demo is. Just got my MS-10 a couple weeks ago, and I appreciate you showing the settings you're messing with - really helping me think about the patch panel. Using the Keyboard CV out to drive the peaked-out 'cutoff frequency' tone, and hiding the basic keyboard pitch by cranking PWM, to get those crazy satellite sounds in the intro (and 6:30) is genius.
Gracias amigo!
4 mins in lovely sounds. Just had mine refurbed and it is sounding as good as it did all those years ago. Great video and so glad I came across it.
Dope ass sounds
super nice sound , love it!
I wish they made these instead of those 'thin'-thesizers they make nowadays. Your demos are definitely some of the best.
Who would have told back then the ms20 was going to be reissued
Lovely synth, I bought one and played it in a band 1982-84. It was on top of LE Logan, Italian organ. I miss it, I traded it with Korg Poly-61.
Great demo. Some wonderful sounds. You make it look so easy. Lovely synth. Thanks for posting. LOL .
In all older synths like this there are a transistor or two that may be a bit of an odd find. However, the MS10/ 20's don't tend too have too many odd ball parts in them. I've been repairing vintage synths and many other electronic devices for over 20 years and I've seen at least over a hand full of these machines and have always managed to resurrect them. If you find a good tech they should be able to help you out just fine ;)
Superb MS -10 glory
0:02 oh man, that's totally me with MS-20 & MS-10
When I see your demo, I'm thinking that bying an MS10 and patching it with my Yamaha CS15 could be really cool.... :o)
Thx for the video....
crude noisemaker ! Love it !
@alphajuno1 thanks... you can see the knob settings in the video.
Yes thank you for this demo!.. I was 6 when you posted this!
Great demo.
Nice demo!
Stop it, you're hurting it! 1:37 lol
Holy Shit. WOW. I get it now!! This thing is a FUCKING MONSTER!! DAMN!! Added to my list. ;) Thank You.
Wich Sound is it at 3:48 ?
It's the sound called "night in jail 1978".
@herrlipp thank you amigo! :-)
Watch NAMM 2013 for a possible MS20 Mini analog announcement.
hello how do you generate sound at 8:00 ? it's a cool random like ..
@AnalogAudio1 true but are there replacement chips for the ms10 capicitors etc- do you know- many old analogs are repairable? some arent- i was just wondering if the ms10 was one of the fixable ones-?
maybe a Mini MS-10 and mini MS-50 will follow ;-)
and with good luck a Mini PS-3100 :-D
See this video: "Ibio directo 1984 La Baila".
MS-10, MS-20, String Solina, Casio...
the reason is, the MS-20 lowpass filter sounds different.
@SonyCrocket Ah thanks! ..Looks like it was probably the CS5 :)
Are patch sheets/diagrams available for these patches?
No, sorry
It says in the description that the sound at 2:20 can't be done on an MS-20. Is there a reason? It just sounds like a saw and the envelope modulating the filter cutoff. I don't hear PWM.
Sounds more like oscillator sync to me. That would require a mod to an MS20. Six years late but better late than never lol
@salvadory well - everything can break: your synth, your partnership, your body, your live... spare parts? Enjoy as long you can :-)
Hello. Great demo !!
If I get one, will I be able to connect it on my Yamaha CS15 for more powerful sounds ?
( Hz / Volt and audio Input)
I thought the only difference between the filters was that the MS-20 also has a high pass. The only synth with an MS filter that I have is the Monotron, so the only way I can tell how they sound is TH-cam videos.
are these repairable if they go kaputt???- want to get one but dont want to buy an analog like the yamaha cs which have parts that are no longer available and if they die your stuck with a 1000 dollar bookshelf piece - are MS10s parts available if things go awry since they are afterall pushing 30 + years old
Hmmm, this, the MS-20, a Moog Voyager Old School, or a Moog Little Phatty?
very nice demo ! but I'm wondering , since it's a korg , why putting Roland and System in the tags ? O.o
I like the MS-10s filter better than the MS-20's lowpass....... although the ms-50 has the best filter IMO
@Iwalkedtheplank Vintage synths look confusing? Well, you must learn to program a MS-10, there are no presets. To get good sounds out of it, time and experience is needed. That's why it's confusing for some people. The MS-10 is great to begin with!
But if you need new sounds by pressing a button, and don't want to deal with synthesis, the Microkorg is the better choice.
amazing sounds! noseplug!
I have one of these. my father gave it to me. but it's missing the piano part. I guess it got lost over the years.
The keyboard isn't removable. You sure it isn't actually an MS-50 that you have?
It's better than a singing mouth:-D.
Great stuff! This synth looks very familiar. I played something like this, which was on a display at some electronics/gadget exhibition :P I think it was made by yamaha though - looked exactly like this though! Any idea what it might be?
I had this 1982-84, before that band mate had very similar style Yamaha synth. But I can't remember which model name/number.
@tobibarnet Yamaha CS5 or CS10
Mah first love 🥲 fatter sounding than the 20
Yes, the filter sounds clearly different. I remember, I was a bit dissapointed after buying the MS20 as a MS10 owner ;-)
In the mouth then in the nose
Dude at least put some salsa
lol
