What a chemistry. Absolutely amazing lineup. Even when Ian Gillan is not in his prime they are absolutely incredible. What a musicianship. Every musician has a strong identity. You can easily recognise them. Bow down! Best band ever.
Blackmore makes such fantastic talent look,so,easy. Love Ian Paige's drumming and Jon Lord's Organ as always is,a,treasure missed so much, He was amazing. Purple can never be replaced. Too bad all the ego,BS broke them up. They could have produced so much more. They were one of the only bands I ever slept over night to get tickets for. I,was so glad I saw them with the original line up.
Remember this is a rehearsal. They´re not performing, but finding their feet with new material. And they still kick ass. What a group, what amazing talent. Sad they´re gone their separate ways now.
Absolutely right. It doesn't sound like Ian is singing full out; it sounds like he's saving his voice for the show. TBRO tour had some brilliant performances and Gillan was always spot on. Just check out Stuttgart official recording as an example, or last show with Ritchie in Helsinki.
Deep Purple are sort of relatives to me...I grew up listening to Purple Family bands for years and years and I saw DP live in my hometown during this tour. Nowadays I'm into a gazillion of different bands and I don't listen to their music as often as I used to, but when it happens it feels like going home, returning to a fantastic place I left so long ago...and still their songs sound fresh and inspired...it must mean something
Band playing so well here. Ian Paice !!!! Love the last minute of The battle rages on. Paice is so at the heart of this song. Ritchie even makes an effort ... despite contemplating his departure.

So exciting! I saw mkII for the first and last time in Forlì, same 1993 tour. I consider myself a lucky man to have attended one of their concerts. Even if we'll never see them together again, their music and performances will never die.
Agree. Paice is one of the drumming greats of that era. To me, he definitely seems to be the guy here that is really pushing the band and working very hard to keep the energy levels high. His fast snare riff at the end of Battle Rages On (around 14.00) is just so "Paice" - superb. Perhaps he was just trying to push past how much Gillan and Blackmore hated each other at that point.
A great vid! DP sounded really good. I have to say Ian Paice is just so smooth...the nuance in his playing comes out well in the video. Nice to see the band having a jam without all the frills.

This is historic footage, never seen this before! The concert in Bregenz was the first night of the tour's European leg in 1993, which is why they obviously ran through the newer songs in "rehearsal mode". I was lucky to see them eight days after this was filmed at Villach, Austria so this here is quite special to me. Thanks for uploading!
I really enjoyed seeing those production rehearsals, that version they played of The Battle Rages on was brilliant, Blackie's solos in that song were so on point, and yet during the tour, he'd often throw to Jon to do phrase each back and forth, totally impromtu whereas here ,he just plays the solo all the way, his playing is so realxed and inventive, his guitar work here is what I would have liked to have heard in the shows, but hes a complex guy, there is a reason he does these unpredictable things, and maybe we will never understand why, but at the end of the day he is a phenominal guitarist, one I have so much respect for, high standards, always pushing the boundaries........These guys were a force!! I can never get enough!! The whole band played much better on this tour than the Perfect Strangers tours in the '85 era, much better tempos, Ian's voice was in better shape, and the Battle Rages on as an album I think is easily overlooked, its a strong album with some great songs on it, Title track, Anya, Lick it up, Talk about love, Twist in the Tale.........just brilliant, thank you for posting this footage.
MARK2 FOREVER!!!
So they start right off with one of my favorite songs on the album. Great material here, matched with great performance. Gonna have to play this video a lot. Thank you for the post.
Three great songs from my favorite band. Deep Purple is still rocking hard here. Great sound from the band, including Gillan, who has his signature voice here.
I think the band sound fantastic and the songs are better Than I remember them from the album. Ritchie sounds great and so does Ian Gillan. You don't knock yourself out singing or playing in a rehearsal. Don't know why Gillan gets such a bad rap here. Very enjoyable to see to this, nice post.
Blackmore was in -93 at his finest playing form in Deep Purple since 1974 and never topped that. Not even at his last great era 1995-97 in Rainbow. Sad but true. :(
I totally agree. I also am a latent Slaves and Masters fan. The 90-93 period was Blackmore's best as a player. He had such command and fire... It would be cool if they put out a concert video from '91 tour. The Rockpalast Rainbow show from '95 was also a high level document of Ritchie's playing.
Different styles compared to Bonham, but in some way I agree, but saying that Ian Paice is underrated, can´t quit agree, everyone who knows something about music and specially hard rock knows his quality and that he is the top drummer.
I had 2nd row for this tour in Darien Lake, NY. Unfortunately they cancelled the tour right before the show. I was bummed big time. I did get to see them on the Perfect Strangers tour in 1985 in the 5th row. Amazing band.
They were in their 40s here. Gillian sings the way axel rose and others sang before rock nearly vanished. He sacrificed his voice for Purple and made Black Sabbath their best albums. Listen to Hallelujah. A universal praise to God. Incredible Deep Purple!!
Funny because "The Battle Rages On' get a lot of negative press but I think it is a fine album, heavy with some great toons and solos, I see it as the follow up to Perfect Strangers. Saw them on this tour, they were loud, tight and fucking brilliant.
@@volpeverde6441 Definitely the worst album Deep Purple made. And the best album Rainbow never made? Thankfully there was only one Deep purple album with Jolene.

You can sense the tension between the guys here, centered around Ritchie, most likely. Really hate to say it, but Gillan's voice at that point was just a shell of what it once was. Feel sorry for Lord, Paice and Glover, tho. They were stuck in the middle.
They sound great.Gillan does also.but Ritchie Blackmore doesn't seem to be enjoying it.his playing is great but it looks like he wants out..and 2 months after this he got out..sad Deep purple was and is one of the greatest bands ever!

I think The Battle Rages On was a solid LP and very underrated.
The title track is so Djenty as far as the riff is concernd.
Blackmore called that album " The cattle grazes on"
"Solid" is not good enough. It's among Top 5
Battle Rages On is much better than Masters & Slaves. M&S was a very uninspired record. Everyone blamed JL Turner, but I think Blackmore is to blame.
Its good but the recycled rainbow riffs…
Ritchie's never satisfied. Harmful? Perfectionist! :D
For me Ian Paice is Deep Purple. Only he stays in band all times long.
