  • We finally make it to Huatulco, Mexico, and attempt to clear into the country, but are completely oblivious to to the local laws which got us unexpectedly in a spot of bother...
    SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

    Dear Captain Colin!!!
    I am writing from Hungary.
    I watched your videos from start to finish.
    I am very hooked on the series.
    Congratulations on your capat. I'll joke and stick with you.
    Unfortunately, we don't have a sea, only a big lake, I sailed a little on it.
    Sea sailing was on my bucket list, but now it is unlikely that I will be able to do it.
    I am 73 years old, so I live through videos.
    I follow many yachts, but yours catches my attention the most.
    Enjoy life, the water and the many people who surround you and love you.
    Stay so human and helpful.
    Good wind and few hurricanes!!!

    Collin, all you have to do is go to the next page on your Cerbo display and set the AC current limit to 17 amps. Thats around 2000 watts and it wont pull anymore than that from the generator, it manages it all on the fly. If you had a multi control panel you would have a dedicated knob for that setting. Just remember to put it back to 30 or 50 when you have shore power.

    Parents had a boat, and we extended the operational use time of our laptop and tablets by (used both depending on how often we used each) either storing the devices in a Zip lock or vacuum sealed bag. It reduced the exposure too moisture and salt air in the boating environment.

    It's pretty easy to set the shore power limit on your Multiplus so that you don't overload your generator. You can configure your Multiplus to let you use your Cerbo GX to adjust your limit depending on if you're plugged into a generator or shore power. Time to read the manual. :)

    You need to enable power assist in the multiplus settings. You can also limit how much the multiplus pulls from the generator so the inverter will keep everything within limits and you won't overload the generator or shore power. I have a nearly identical system on my RV that I full time travel in and that is how my setup functions.

      People, the Mexican Customs is operating , just like Customs in the Majority Of Democratic NATION'S to Protect their Nation from imports of Foot and Mouth Disease, And, other Vet Diseases, And, ultimately to Protect Public Health.
      Some Commentator's are making comments disparaging the Custom Official's.
      At a Time Of Million's Of Human Premature Deaths from the CORONA VIRUSES VARIANTS PANDEMIC, We ALL Should Respect these Official's Braving Meeting And thereby Enabling International Travel.
      As an International Lawyer, I Respect ALL PEOPLE, ALL OFFICIAL'S, AND ALL INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS WHO ARE HELPING TO STOP THE SPREAD OF THE CORONA VIRUSES VARIANTS PANDEMIC.
      Conversely, I would discourage All People who Disrespect These Official's who are so Glib in their throw away comments of Disrespect.
      It should be noted, that every Nation which FAILED, REFUSED, OR, NEGLECTED TO IMPLEMENT NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS AGAINST THE CORONA VIRUSES VARIANTS PANDEMIC immediately, actually suffered the Disproportionate High Levels Of Premature Deaths WORLD Wide...
      Among those Nation's
      1. Brazil
      2. Trump's USA
      3. United Kingdom
      Accordingly, before Glib Commentator's Disrespect Official's doing their Official Job's, THINK...Do you want Good Health Or Premature Death?
      Well Done to the Mexican Official's doing their Official Job's, while showing some kindness and permitting the crew cook + eat their food. Incidentally, the Mexican Customs did not have to allow the crew to cook and eat the food. In NATION'S Ports all around the World importation of food is strictly enforced, including in every Nation where the crew originate.
      Now, separately, I have one question, what make of Motorized Winch Handle was utilized in this episode?

What I have always used on the fishing boats in Alaska for nav, temp readout, and the other important boat stuff along as personal use is just Dell desktop/laptops. We usually have 3-4 at one given time on the boat. They last 3-4 years with no issue. We tried Apple 2-3 years ago and 3 of the 4 laptops died in 6 months. The 4th died a month later.

    Hilarious mate, been using a silly WiFi extender for over a year. Darn sure beats the cost of a sat phone subscription. Here's the funny part, I am at the point of no return heading to Hawaii from LA and I've got 4 bars on my phone! As it turned out my radar could only see 25 miles but a few hours later I discovered we were piggybacking off a cruise ship, then a cargo ship, then....my phone rang. It connected to a NAVY ship and they were rather unhappy with me and told me to disconnect immediately. I told them to add a password but once I told HOW I was connected he laughed and said nevermind. I took a photo of them passing us 1/4 off and laid on the horn as they did. It was more like "hey little sailboat look how fast can go. Nanner nanner!"

    Hi Colin, when you get a corroded connection, the resistance goes up. When the resistance goes up the current goes down, not up. The reason the connection heats up is that the resistance dissipates the current, becoming a heater, so not passing the current to the load. It's a common misconception, so just clearing this up. Cheers, love the channel!

    • @chrisviviers5649
      @chrisviviers5649 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically you're right, the resistance goes up, but what causes the heating is the voltage drop across that resistance. P=VI, hence the heat.

    @OutsideAndOffgrid ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Colin! Next time you run the Honda generator just change the Input Current Limit on your Victron System to whatever the shore power can supply, typically down to 15 amps AC from those small generators. Then you can run whatever you want on your AC system like your watermaker, and whatever AC power isnt being used will then in turn be used in the Charger to charge the batteries. As soon as your turn off your watermaker or other AC loads it will all go in to the batteries through the charger. Basically by setting the Input Current Limit you will never Over load the shore power, whether it is coming from a Generator or shore power pedestal. Love your videos and can't wait to see your trip across the ocean! - Hunter

  • @PanelsUpSolar
    @PanelsUpSolar ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Your wire diagram looks familiar. Try turning down the incoming current limiter on the inverter. It will prioritize power to the loads from the generator and automatically reduce battery charging capability. Once the loads are gone it will automatically go back to charging the battery.

We had our scuba tanks and compressor. Met lots of people cruising north and south . We buddy boated with a boat called the terrapin. 37 ft cat . I was seventeen . My father was the captain . We had never sailed . The boat was new . So we had minor breakdowns.
    We made about fifty miles a day . At seven knots . Only time we went ashore was for fuel and water . Caught lots fish and mom was an excellent cook . We met lots of wonderful people . Sailors are a special breed of cat . The terrapin went on south at the sea of Cortez .onward to south American to the catamaran river .up to a motel called the the catamaran. Regarding the number of laptops and electronic equipment you go through, it’s almost definitely due to the humidity. If you have the room you would benefit from a dehumidifying cabinet for your electronics. Something like a Sirui HC70 should fit a decent sized laptop and your camera equipment. Running at 110-240v AC it should run at just over 11 amp hours per day if running 24/7. Once again, GREAT content and Happy sailing!

    Hey Colin concerning your laptop dilemma. Don't know if this would work for you but maybe when not in use throw it in a sealed bag with some of those silica moisture extractor thingy's. That may be more hassle than you want to go through but just a thought. Love the content keep it up!

      I think their problems are probably electric power issues and lightning strikes probably didn't help.
      Also Apple laptops seem to just be problematic.

    I love Expedition Drenched and everyone on her, especially THIS lady! As for power, you need double the solar and the new wind generator Rick Moore and Sophisticated Lady added recently. Those black spots on the white pad next to you for much of the time (16:38 for instance) is black mold, poisonous

    just a hint, you can cover the PCB in the laptop with a conformal coating to make it waterproof and saltproof its not perfect but drone PCB covered in is last fine in the rain

    Just a thought use Silica gel packs inside the hard drive compartment to help prevent moisture change the every 30 days also use die electric grease on the connection points to help reduce corrosion I have done this to reduce salt air from my computer control devices close to the shore helps just a thought good luck

    I have a challenge for the guys on Parley. You consider yourselves singers/sailors so I'd love it if in one of you videos you sang the Niel Young song Old Man. I have always loved it and apart from the meaning behind it you guy have the range to sing it was. How about it?

    3:00 Have you looked into Thinkpad? Great alternative to Mac, very durable. "Mil-spec" (Mil-SPEC 810H) . Also cheaper with more performance. Their P Series are Mobile Workstations. The Z series is the video editing option. 3 year international transferable warrenty from new. Another option you can take out the Mothereboard of whatever you currenty have and conformal coat it.

    Ever thought of buying a solid state desktop with water cooling? The desktop box needs to be fully sealed that no tropical seawater air can get near any pc component. For the attached cable one would need to build an outside extra enclosure, or maybe such sealed desktop cases can be bought. They would be needed in certain work environment for safety reasons, like production of inflammables. Such a desktop pc would be more powerful than a laptop and should last at sea as long as on land. The point is that no air is needed inside the case for cooling. All cooling like for the cpu, power graphics card, power supply, etc, would have to be done outside the desktop pc. Or look for fanless power desktops designs, it doesn't have to be water cooling, it just came to mind.
    You could set up a server system that works with something like a Zero Client. Many Zero Monitor Clients with keyboard could boot onto the server and work at the same time. Zero Clients are very cheap, especially second hand. But maybe there are newer systems. You would need to run cables to the places where people work and can plug the Zero Clients into the network, cable is better than wireless. Good Luck!

    Nothing wrong with your schematic - Victron inverters can limit the power the take from mains (generator) so you can lower the amps allowed to draw from the generator to avoid overlaoding it - i use this all the time for different mains sources. Enjoy
