I tend to agree. Although I think the best way to square that circle is to see their group mentality as a strong belief in the power of their state. We see this in some authoritarian ideologies.

I played a duergar psion in 3.5e. Immune to poison, paralysis and phantasms. Invisibility and enlarge self 1/day.
