    I actually commute on tubular tires and I have a few tips to share.
    1)a lot of tubulars have removable valve cores. There's a tool that helps you remove them so you can put sealants like Slime in them, however, It can also be done without removing the core. It pays dividends to put slime in your tubulars now.
    2) always carry Slime and a hand pump with you. Hopefully your flat is a pin hole, which is easily sealable.
    3) clean your treads with vinegar. It keeps the sharp pebbles from really sticking in and doing serious damage on the subsequent revolutions.
    4) consider acquiring multiple tubular wheelsets. This is where vintage 6speeds shine, there are a lot of people who want to get rid of their vintage mavic/fir/nisi/fiamme 6 speed wheelsets for cheap. This way, you can have ready to go wheels when something really catastrophic happens, and repair the busted tube on a later date. Also don't forget to put slime in your spare wheelsets.

    No mention if they put new tubulars on stretcher rims and inflate them days prior to make mounting easier. How much air goes in tire prior to mounting? No gloves, if rim & tire are sticky, how does mechanic prevent getting glue on rim, sidewall and his hands? What is best solvent for taking glue off if you overglue sidewall or rims? Details please!

    “And then you recoat that (the wheel) and stick that (the tyre) on (to the wheel)” is what I believe he says at 1:43 where Simon decides to talk over him. So three coats on the rim each allowed to dry and one on the tyre allowed to dry, then one coat on the rim and stick the tyre straight on while the fourth layer of glue is still wet.

    I'd love you guys to do a video discussing the pro's and con's of Tubular vs Clinchers. It seems the cycling enthusiast often do things the way the pro's do it, even at exorbitant expense. Except tires. I don't know a single rider who still rides tubular, even when their bike is otherwise spared no expense.

    • @ivanabraham
      @ivanabraham 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce Milligan I use clincher for training and tubulars for racing. Corners better, rolls faster. Okay not very much but it does. It has a almost perfekt circular crossection and this feels just better in racing. Plus, I would not buy a carbon rim for clinchers.

    • @PerRutkowski
      @PerRutkowski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bruce Milligan i also train with tubs. Now it's almost 15k km without a single flat! So i never needed a support car. Whats the difference between having flat in tubular (you can try to use sealant, it usually works) and having two flats with only one spare tube for clincher?

    Always remember to pre stretch the tubular for at least a day also.This will make it much easier to mount. Use an old tubular rim and inflate to high pressure and leave it. Then follow the video. ☺️

      A good stretched tubular would do this. The thing to do, to avoid glue on the sides of the tubular, is to actually inflate them to around 3-4 bars.

    I've used tub tape for many years and not a single issue. Its also a LOT less hassle.
    I found standard beaded tyres are better for everyday use and a lot cleaner and easier to fit. This convenience turned me away from using tubular/tubeless tyres.

    I used tubs all the time for racing and training and you NEVER put the glue on first , after a layer of glue was on the rim for a couple of days left to dry you put the brand new tub on and only then put a little presure in the tyre then roll the tub off the side of the rim without it slipping off then apply the glue to the rim and tub at the same time then let the tyre seat back on the rim and work your way round the wheel, no mess on sidewall or fingers, inflate to desired presure leave for a day then ride them, I NEVER had a tub roll off in all temperatures I rode them in Belgium in very hot one day races on criterium circuits with fast tight corners and had no problems at all, so very surprised at the so called expert mechanics methods and you still see tubs rolling off in the Tour!

      +Andrew Stevenson yes. They actually have pre stretched tyres on old tubular rims in their mechanics truck. If you do have an old tub wheel/rim, it's a good idea to pre-stretch a little. Also, cycling mechanics must have the strongest thumbs and hands with the amount of tubs they glue.

    Just trying to understand what this is. If I'm 25 miles out on a weekend ride and I get a flat? So, I pull out the glue and sandpaper? Or, do I just pull out my trusty spare tube and be on my way?

    • @robr6763
      @robr6763 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jj higgs The tire is sewn around the tube. Your trusty spare tube will do nothing for you. You either carry a spare whole tire, pre-glued, probably folded up under the saddle, or you carry a can of Vittoria Pitstop or something similar. Or you call someone you know will drive out to get you. Or you walk forever and ever. The sandpaper is only for new rims.

      Rob R Or you can save money buy not buying expensive tubular wheels.

    • @ChuckD59
      @ChuckD59 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to be clear: "Tube" should refer to the inner tube in a clincher. "Tub" refers to tubular tires (also called "sew-ups" because they're basically a clincher with the inner tube literally sewn together at the bead).
      So when you're riding tubs, you have a spare that's been preglued stuffed up under your saddle or whatever. If you used sealant and it doesn't seal a puncture, you stop and peel off the flat (bring some plastic tire levers too) and just stick the spare on. The glue will be good enough to get you home.

    Nobody ever mentions anything about a little hump once the tyre is mounted where the valve is. When mounting, you need to put all your strength at the beginning so the tire is nice and flat around the valve. (Also pre-stretching for a few days is essential)

    I have been given quite an old single speed bike and I used to mountain bike. I would really like to get back into cycling and go onto Road Biking. I started training today and hit 10.9km in 28:43 with the old bike. Im only 15 and do not have the means to buy a super expensive road bike so I was quite interested in gradually replacing parts on the bike periodically to create a good road bike. Is this feasible? For example,next week I am going to replace the over hand break levers for uphill climbing as I only have one brake lever working at the moment. I don't even have a helmet as they are too expensive for me. My birthday is in 5 days and I'm hoping to replace some bike levers, get a proper helmet and re-wrap the handlebars as I took them off today as they were extremely old, (5+ years). I would really appreciate any help that I receive and I would be extremely appreciative if someone could get in contact with me about helping me on my road bike journey. Love the great tips and tricks GCN and hope everyone has a good day! Kind Regards, Q

    I can't understand the most important part for me: what is he saying about the glue on the rim vs the tire. Do they put "dry" tire on the "wet" rim? Most of the wheel manufacturers recommend putting fresh glue on both before mounting the tire, which is really messy.
    Could anyone please make a transcription of that part(from 1:58)? Thanks.

    • @gabriel.trainer

      +Nick Kukoreko No my friend. It's clear. The 4th coat on the rim and the only coat on the tire are soak. They need to be sticky. So they are a little wet. What was not clear is the ammount of time you have to wait aftar that last coat on both sides (rim and tire) to finally put the tire.

      khlash you don't really. Some people offer tubular repairs, but it's really a dying art. Some tubulars can be repaired using latex (the stuff used to seal tubeless tyres), but this is really restricted to the models that are tubeless and Tufo are the only manufacturer I know doing that. A couple of brands offer quick sealants (combination of latex, foam and CO2) that can be used if you puncture a tub out on the road. I'm really not sure how permanent solutions like this are, though.

      There is a video I keep deferring to make, got it down to a science. Good tubulars get flats rarely (on good roads had 1 flat in 20,000 kms with Veloflex). On chippy roads, more often. Worth doing on an expensive tyre with less than 50% wear. However, the key is: sharp knife, leather sewing kit, patch kit and epoxy/welbound. Open surgically the casing, 2-3 inches?, pull the latex, ensure there is one and not two holes. Patch, put the latex under the foot of a chair. Them using the leather kit, you can pre-drill holes at 5mm interval, use the thick needle and cord to saw it back. When done, add a layer of epoxy/welbound. It solidifies the casing and new sutures. Next day it is as good as new. Used it on rear tyres, front tyre. Avoid inserting Stan's sealer for a while, as it may loosen the patch. Work time? 30 min.....

      ***** Or just stick a spare tub in your pocket like you would an inner tube. It's really not that big a deal. Plus tubular wheelsets are lighter than their clincher counterparts. And tubs are much much better than clinchers in terms of performance and comfort. Give it a try!

      I was just trying to dispel this myth that tubs are only for pros with support cars - not the case. Maintenance really isn't that difficult. If you have the dosh and want the best performance (if you race for example), then tubs are the way to go. In terms of an everyday wheelset though, I'd still go with a sturdy alu. Campa Shamal Mille for example

      What I did to my last removal: Remove tub, Rub with acetone / rag to get glue off, sand -> reglue.

      I'm sure we all know how it's done. with lots elbow grease. I want to know if the pro mech's have secret tricks to get the job done easier and faster.

      ***** Initially mentioned method is no different than what I do at home. Cut the tub, scotch pad, acetone+goo gone and rub like hell. Use of wire brush on your second comment sounds interesting but I would never dare to do that on carbon wheels.

    how to tape or glue a 700X30c tire to a normal rim ally

  • @3vimages471
    @3vimages471 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Ok I will ask the idiot question ... why would you want to glue the innertube to the rim? And what do you do if you have a puncture out on a ride too big to just patch?

    • @gcn
      @gcn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      3Vimages That's not an idiot question at all. A tubular tyre is different from a normal tyre in that it is completely enclosed, the inner tube is literally sewn inside it. The reason it's preferred by road racers is that it "feels" nicer on the road, has less rolling resistance, and is a bit lighter.
      And you can't repair punctures, the whole, very expensive, tyre gets thrown out.

      damari192837465 bit late to the party here but running tubular will allow you to run at very low psi (30) and very high psi (200)

    Having seen that, as a regular rider in the UK I would never consider tubs- what a total pain in the butt to fit and use over clinchers! Something really only suitable for pro teams clearly.

Like oters have stated... wheres the detail ? how is he putting glued tubs on like theres no glue on ? pre stretch ? etc...
